SPMT Meeting Notes 12/5/12 Led by: Lauren Greenhill Notetaker: Judy Oglesby Present: Lauren Greenhill Julie

Youngblood Judy Oglesby Kathy Moody Laura Kearney Mary Archer Kim Hyman Meeting Notes: Greenhill reviewed purpose of meeting, and constructs #4, 2, and 7. These are the areas where we scored lower than Manning. Last meeting was reviewed. We discussed 2.1d last time, and therefore will not discuss this today as Ms. Boulden has those notes. Graphic organizer distributed by Greenhill (Whats working/not working?). Group agrees to complete one together for one of the constructs. Group decides to focus today on construct 4.1f: Parents/guardians support teachers, contributing to their success with students. Positives: parent volunteers helping with clerical duties strong PTA P.O.P.S. taking off; community event seemed well-attended Challenges: demographics with which we are working; babysitter mentality- parents do not value education. Entitlement mentality Hard to get in touch with parentsnot updating phone numbers, addresses, contact info, etc. Teachers spend time communicating through Tuesday folders, behavior reports, newsletters, etc., yet many parents claim to be uninformed. How does all of this affect my classroom? Positives: PTA money provides resources for classroom Clerical volunteers free up time for other duties POPS communicates with target demographic and takes intimidation factor out of the equation. Challenges:

lack of support in discipline issues; if they ignore us, then we will handle it ourselves. Overcoming negative home attitudes (I wont have to work, Im not going to college, even in K-2) Lack of homework supportparent can do one-on-one whereas we are oneto-many. Moving Forward Positives: Keep pursuing idea of copy shop/parent clerical volunteers to free up time for teachers Perhaps have students record voicemail/e-blasts/write letters to parents to come to events; less formal, more inviting. Communicate special events and invite parents to attend. Reading buddies; parents read to a whole class? Negatives: Increase communication between individual teachers and parents. Kearney brought up idea of all K-2 in one district school, all 3-5 in one district school. Manning/Belmont divisions would be gone; would help with moving, transfers, continuity of services, etc. Constructs 2 and 4: Reward for teacher shout-out, coverage for class for one hour? Arrange coverage for daytime parent and teacher meetings, and attendance of Parent University meetings (outreach) Elicit more positive contact between teacher and student/parent Two potential solutions: Continue copy shop idea. Increase in positive contact from teachers to parents.
