A
mateur Architecture Studio emerged
on the European architectural
scene at the 10th Venice Architecture
Biennale: next to their Chinese pavil-
ion, the offces two partners Wang
Shu and Lu Wenyu presented an in-
stallation called Tiles Garden: no less
than 66,000 recycled Chinese roof
tiles laid on a bamboo base.
Amateur Architecture Studio explore
the relationship between architecture
and the changing life style in China.
Through their work, in poetic fashion
these architects convert traditional
Chinese know-how into a contempo-
rary architectural language. The name
of the offce signifes much: Amateur
Architecture is an implied critique
of the lack of thought by professional
architects in contemporary China,
where entire urban and rural areas are
being utterly transformed as part of
the countrys ongoing globalization;
and it also refects Wang Shus inter-
est in Chinas vernacular architecture,
an architecture that has long produced
handmade, low cost, spontaneous, of-
ten ephemeral buildings.
Amateur Architecture Studio seek an-
swers to questions such as how to re-
construct areas of Chinese cities using
contemporary techniques but respect-
ing the traditional Chinese building
ideology of relating to the natural
landscape; again, how to cope with
large-scale demolition and reconstruc-
tion in Chinese cities; and lastly, how
to reinterpret local design traditions by
fnding ways to recycle older buildings.
Over the past ten years Amateur
Architecture Studio have developed an
experimental methodology that is both
innovative and site-specifc. Wang Shu
and Lu Wenyu combine research into
the Chinese rural tradition and their
own architectural experiments. As
point of departure their design prac-
tice has small-scale architectural ex-
periments, subsequently implemented
in specifc metropolitan spaces and in
the construction of high-rise residen-
tial buildings. Ultimately these experi-
ments should be carried out on the full
urban scale.
I
n 2006 maakte Amateur Architecture
Studio naam binnen Europese archi-
tectuurmiddens met de deelname aan
de tiende Architectuurbinnale van
Veneti. Naast het Chinese paviljoen
bouwden Wang Shu en Lu Wenyu, de
twee partners van het bureau, de instal-
latie Tile Garden, een bamboestruc-
tuur die werd bedekt met 66.000 gere-
cycleerde Chinese dakpannen.
Amateur Architecture Studio verkent
de relatie tussen architectuur en de
veranderende levensstijl in China. In
hun ontwerpen zetten de architecten,
op een potische manier, traditionele
Chinese kennis om in een hedendaag-
se architectuurtaal. De naam van het
bureau is een programma. Enerzijds
vormt het concept van Amateur Ar-
chitecture een kritiek op het gebrek
aan zelfrefectie binnen het architec-
tenberoep in het hedendaagse China.
Heler stedelijke en rurale gebieden
ondergaan, onder de invloed van de
voortschrijdende globalisatie van het
land, een transformatie zonder voor-
gaande. Anderzijds verwijst de naam
naar Wang Shus interesse voor de ver-
naculaire architectuur in China; een
artisanale architectuur, die low cost is,
spontaan tot stand komt en vaak ook
een efemeer karakter heeft.
In hun ontwerppraktijk zoeken Wang
experimentele ontwerpmethodologie
ontwikkeld. In hun werk combine-

contemporain. Le nom du bureau tra-
duit leur programme. Dune part, il fait
rfrence lintrt de Wang Shu pour
larchitecture chinoise vernaculaire,
artisanale, bon march, spontane et
souvent phmre. Dautre part, le
concept dAmateur Architecture est
une critique de la profession darchi-
tecte en Chine qui, dans un contexte
globalis de mutations urbaines et ru-
rales, se caractrise par une absence de
rfexion.
Le bureau affronte le problme des des-
tructions massives et de la reconstruc-
tion des villes chinoises. Il rfchit la
faon de reconstruire dans des condi-
tions contemporaines tout en respec-
tant une conception traditionnelle:
linterdpendance de larchitecture
et du paysage. Leur travail se focalise
galement sur la rinterprtation de
larchitecture traditionnelle locale par
le recyclage.
Au cours des dix dernires annes,
Amateur Architecture Studio a dvelopp
une mthode innovante, exprimen-
tale et contextualiste. Wang Shu et Lu
Wenyu associent leurs recherches sur
les traditions chinoises rurales locales,
des expriences architecturales appli-
ques. Dabord testes petite chelle,
leurs exprimentations sont ensuite
transposes de grands ensembles
de logement ou des espaces mtro-
politains pour fnalement stendre
lchelle urbaine.

In a number of projects including
university campuses, a large gallery, a
museum, a city park and a number of
high-rises, Amateur Architecture Studio
endeavoured to promote the Rebuild-
ing Contemporary Local Chinese Ar-
chitecture concept.
The exhibition has a two-fold axis: the
models, photographs and plans pro-
vide the frst comprehensive overview
of Amateur Architecture Studios major
projects since its foundation in 1997;
and at the same time, the exhibition
focuses on the relationship between
theory and praxis, between literary
production and the architectural body
of work.
B
orn in Hangzhou in 1963, Wang
Shu belongs to the frst generation
of architects whose studies came after
the economic reforms pushed through
by Deng Xiaoping in the late seventies.
After studying architecture at South-
east University (Nanjing) he took a
doctorate in city design. Now Dean of
the School of Architecture and Direc-
tor of the Architecture Department in
the China Academy of Art, Wang Shu
is regularly invited to be on a jury, and
is a member of the 2009 Nomination
Committee for the Ordos prize. Be-
fore becoming an architect Wang Shu
was a writer, and he likes to insist that
for him architecture is only part of his
work. Humanity is more important
than architecture, and craft industry
more important than technology, he
writes.
In 1997 Wang Shu and his wife Lu
Wenyu founded their bureau Amateur
Architecture Studio, staying clear of the
centralized public architectural agen-
cies typical of the regime. In addition
to teaching in the China Academy
of Art, Lu Wenyu continued work-
ing as engineer and project manager
for the East China Investigation and
Design Institute until 2003. Amateur
Architecture Studios work has already
appeared in group exhibitions in Ber-
lin, Paris and Rotterdam. It has won
several prizes, including the Global
Award in 2007. Works by Wang Shu
and Lu Wenyu have appeared in a
number of international architecture
magazines and in the book The Be-
ginning of Design, published in 2002.
The latter gives an account of the proc-
ess whereby Wang Shus method and
language have developed, and itemizes
each of the bureaus projects since its
foundation.

Lexposition sarticule autour de deux
axes. A travers des maquettes, des
plans et des photos, le premier donne
un aperu global des projets les plus
importants dAmateur Architecture Stu-

jing), il fait un doctorat en urbanisme
(city design). Aujourdhui doyen du
dpartement Architecture au sein de la
China Academy of Art, Wang Shu est
rgulirement sollicit pour participer
des jurys. Il est notamment membre
du comit de nomination pour le pro-
jet Ordos 100.
Lhuma-
nit est plus importante que larchitec-
ture, et lartisanat plus important que la
technologie, crit-il.
En 1997, Wang Shu et sa femme Lu
Wenyu fondent leur bureau Amateur
Architecture Studio et saffranchissent
des agences darchitecture publiques
centralises typiques du rgime. A
ct de sa pratique denseignante pour
la China Academy of Art, Lu Wenyu
poursuit cependant son travail ding-
nieure et de responsable de projet pour
le East China Investigation and De-
sign Institute jusquen 2003. Le travail

lesquels le Global Award en 2007.

W
ang Shu (Hangzhou, 1963) be-
hoort tot de eerste generatie ar-
chitecten die studeerde na de economi-
sche hervormingen van Deng Xiaoping
aan het eind van de jaren 70. Na zijn
architectuurstudies aan de Southeast
Univerity (Nanjing), behaalde hij een
doctoraat in de stedenbouw. Vandaag
zetelt hij als decaan van het architec-
tuurdepartement van de China Acade-
my of Art geregeld in architectuurjurys
traliseerde publieke architectuuragent-
schappen die typisch waren voor het
regime. Naast haar onderwijsactiviteit
and Design Institute.
chitectuurtentoonstellingen in Berlijn,
Parijs en Rotterdam. Het werd gelau-
werd met verschillende prijzen, waar-
onder de Global Award 2007. Werk
van Wang Shu en Lu Wenyu werd
gepubliceerd in talloze internationale
architectuurtijdschriften, alsook in het
boek The Beginning of Design (2002).

ele hoogbouw. Het is de bedoeling om
deze experimenten uiteindelijk op een
waarlijk stedelijke schaal toe te kunnen
passen.
Van universiteitscampus tot galerie,
van stedelijk park tot museum, van
hoogbouw tot theehuis. In een reeks
projecten heeft Amateur Architecture
Studio geprobeerd gestalte te geven aan
het concept van de reconstructie van
de hedendaagse locale Chinese archi-
tectuur.
De tentoonstelling is opgebouwd rond
twee assen. Enerzijds biedt het aan de
hand van maquettes, fotos en plannen
een eerste overzicht van het belang-
rijkste werk van Amateur Architecture
Studio sinds de oprichting van het bu-
reau in 1997. Anderzijds zoemt de
tentoonstelling in op de relatie tussen
theorie en praktijk, tussen literaire
productie en architecturaal oeuvre.

Xiangshan Campus, First Phase
Le campus de lAcadmie des Arts se
situe au sud de la colline Xiangshan.
Les btiments de la premire phase,
qui abritent, entre autres, des classes,
des ateliers, des studios et une biblio-
thque, sont implants de faon rgu-
lire. A linstar des maisons tradition-
nelles cour, ils sorganisent autour
locales. A lintrieur des cours, la taille
des fentres est gnreuse; les volets se
dissimulent sous le bois qui couvre len-
semble des faades.
The frst phase of this China Acad-
emy of Art campus lies to the south
of the Xiangshan hill. The build-
ings house various facilities including
classrooms, workshops, studios and a
library, in a regular arrangement. Like
the traditional Chinese houses with
inner courtyard they are arranged in
U-shaped plans each enclosing a gar-
den where students can fnd peace and
calm concentration. The roofs have lo-
cal grey tiles, as do the canopies of the
outer facades. Inside the courtyards
the windows are large, with shutters
concealed behind the wood that lines
all the inner facades.
Xiangshan-heuvel. De gebouwen van
de eerste fase bieden, onder andere,
onderdak aan klaslokalen, ateliers,
studios en een bibliotheek en zijn op
een regelmatige manier ingeplant. Ze
zijn genspireerd op de traditionele
patiowoningen en georganiseerd vol-
gens een U-vormig grondplan rond
een tuin waar men rust en concentratie
kan vinden. De daken en de afdaken
die uitkragen over de buitengevels zijn
bedekt met lokale grijze dakpannen.
Grote glaspuien geven uit op de bin-
nenkoeren.
gevels bedekt.

Xiangshan Campus, Second Phase
Implante de lautre ct de la colline
Xiangshan, la composition de la se-
conde phase du campus de lAcadmie
des Arts semble pouser la complexit
de son environnement. Larchitecture
devient ici un paysage part entire:
certains btiments en bton sont per-
cs de baies aux formes irrgulires,
dautres sont couverts dun simple crpi
blanc mais leur sobrit et la simplicit
de leur volumtrie est rompue par de
longues passerelles sinueuses.
Located on the other side of the Xiang-
shan hill, phase two of the campus has
a composition that appears to refect
the complex forms of the surrounding
countryside. The architecture becomes
a landscape in its own right. Thus some
of these concrete buildings have ir-
regularly shaped apertures while others
have a plain white roughcast fnish; but
in this case their quiet simplicity is in-
terrupted by long sinuous walkways.
China Academy of Art is ingeplant
uitgesneden raamopeningen, andere
zijn bedekt met een eenvoudige witte
bepleistering. Hun sobere vormgeving
en eenvoudige volumetrie wordt geac-
centueerd door lange en gebogen pas-
serelles.

and tiles, bamboo, stone, steel
Construction: 2005
Described by Wang Shu as applying
a modernized traditional building
concept, these fve buildings are scat-
tered over a 65 acre park in the centre
of Ningbo. The Art Gallerys roof was
inspired by the traditional curved roofs
of the regions with rainy season, but
given its length has three curves instead
of two. The design of Teahouse 1 ech-
oes that of the traditional houses built
around an inner garden. Teahouse 2
refects a Zen spirit through the gar-
dens random twists and turns, as do
the mud walls of clay and bamboo. The
Caf gets the curved shape of both its
roof and its foor from that of a lotus
leaf waving in the wind. And the Offce
Building, built with recycled bricks,
has a curved geometry on account of
the sloping site.
bo. Het project wordt door Wang Shu
omschreven als een gemoderniseerde
traditie. Het dak van de lange galerij
is genspireerd op traditionele daken
met een dubbele concave curve die
men terugvindt in deze regenachtige
regio. In Wang Shus project tellen
de daken echter drie segmenten. Het
plan van het Teahouse 1 verwijst naar
traditionele patiowoningen rond een
beplante binnenkoer. Met zijn uit
bamboe en leem opgebouwde muren,
schrijft het Teahouse 2 zich in in de
Zentraditie.
blad. De geometrie van de kantoren,
die uit gerecycleerde bakstenen zijn
opgebouwd, past zich aan aan de hell-
ing van het terrein.

Some of the building materials were
recuperated from demolitions in the
old city, now decorating the facades in

bouwde Amateur Architecture Studio
