Exercise 14: (Page 36)

Translation

Dear Hasan

I extend my greetings to you. I am writing these few lines while sitting in one of the beautiful
public parks that are widespread across London. With me in this park, which is near the
famous British Houses of Parliament, is my friend Ahmad with whom I am staying. We will
be going together to visit the historic royal palace. Then we will be going to the British
Museum before visiting the Islamic Cultural Centre in West London, where we will pray salat
al-maghrib (the prayer just after sunset), God willing.

The weather is very cold today. Most parts of Britain have been experiencing snowfall for the
past two days. The streets and the roofs of the buildings are covered with snow. I saw a snow
plough clearing away the snow that had accumulated in the streets. I also saw council workers
spreading grit on London’s roads to prevent cars from skidding and having accidents.

The house of my friend Ahmed, as is the case with most British houses, is equipped with cen-
tral heating. Behind the house is a large garden of flowers.

In spite of the fact that the weather is very wet and the rain is falling constantly, I am never-
theless having a wonderful time here in London.

I will write to you again from London before I return to you in Damascus at the beginning of
next month, God willing.

Convey my greetings to your family and our colleagues.

Yours sincerely,

Sabir

The negative effects of intoxicants on society

Doctors have expressed their concern at the escalation of the increase in the number of alco-
holics. The British Medical Association explained in a report released the day before yesterday
that the problem of alcoholism and drug addiction is a time bomb threatening the cohesion
and welfare of society. The Association added that the government is closing its eyes to this
serious problem.

The head of the Association has asked people to put pressure on the government to ban the
advertising of alcohol on television.Commenting on this subject, the head of police praised the
clear warning given by the doctors on the dangers of alcohol and drugs. He pointed out that
alcohol and drugs destroy feelings and minds, cause chaos and unrest, and lead people to
commit heinous crimes. The head of police condemned the new law approved recently by the
British parliament that legalised the sale and purchase of alcohol in bars and shops around the
clock.

It is possible to describe the Egyptian weather as hot and dry. The temperature in the summer
months ranges from between the lower to mid thirties. However, the temperature falls a little
at night. Rainfall is minimal in Egypt. Most rainfall occurs in Alexandria. The seasons of
spring and autumn are comfortable. In winter the temperature drops to around twenty
degrees Celsius.
