Look through the idea, front to back. The ideas in red are just ideas. Students should add to these. There is an outline page for Discovery. There are graphic organizer pages for the Discussion and Debate sections. The reason for the worksheets, at the end of the book, is to help you work systematically through the material. Worksheets are helpers and can be a distraction from the rhythm and sequence in your teaching. By putting them at the end they become support pages versus places to stop, giving a smoother presentation.

Discovery
In the beginning of each story you will have a few questions to discover what you know, or think you know about a story. The Title of the article/ story will be given and you will be asked to discover the story by asking good questions. In the second part of discovery you will be asked to find words which you do not know. Some of these may be highlighted already in bold. Definitions will follow to help you discover what the writer is talking about. Discovery will help you form a plan for the discussion and debate.

Discussion
Discussion is not a debate, though it can quickly become one if there are strong opposing ideas in the group. Discussion can be a part of the discovery before you read the story. It may also come after to discuss the ideas of the story. Sometimes a persons views may change after reading the article, which is a good way to start a discussion. Discussion is interaction without a lot of structure. Be careful not to confuse discussion with argument. Debate is about argument. Discussion is about sharing your views and interacting with others who want to expand or give a differing viewpoint.

Debate
Debate is a structured idea. It means that only one person speaks in turn, and with a specific point to address. It also has a time limit, so the speaker must be precise in their argument. In a debate the key is to listen and be prepared to oppose the other teams ideas. It takes research, a lot of work, and patience. In the following story we want to begin with discovery ideas. What can you know from a title, if you dont know about the topic?

Obese kids give lives dismal scores Ratings similar to those of young cancer patients
Tuesday, April 8, 2003 Posted: 10:47 AM EDT (1447 GMT) CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- Obese children rate their quality of life with scores as low as those of young cancer patients on chemotherapy, a study found, highlighting the physical and emotional toll of being too fat.

Teasing at school, difficulties playing sports, fatigue, sleep apnoea and other obesity-linked problems all severely affect obese youngsters' well being, the study
found. While the researchers didn't expect to find youngsters mirroring the clich of the fat, happy child, the dismal scores were far lower than anticipated, said lead author Dr. Jeffrey Schwimmer, a paediatric gastroenterologist at the University of California in San Diego. "The magnitude... is striking," Schwimmer said. "The likelihood of significant quality-of-life impairment was profound for obese children." The study appears in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association, an edition devoted to obesity studies. It comes amid doctors' growing concern about the nation's obesity epidemic and recent data suggesting 15 per cent of U.S. youngsters are severely overweight or obese.

A JAMA editorial notes that Schwimmer's study found that severely obese youngsters and adolescents seeking obesity treatment have more than a fivefold increased risk of reporting low quality of life than healthy youngsters. "It seems clear that one of the most compelling medical challenges of the 21st century is to develop effective strategies to prevent and treat paediatric obesity," Dr.s Jack and Susan Yanovski of the National Institutes of Health said in the editorial. Schwimmer's study involved 106 children aged 5 to 18, who filled out a questionnaire last year, used by paediatricians, to evaluate quality of life issues. Parents answered the same questionnaires, and their ratings of their children's well-being were even lower than the youngsters' self-ratings. On the 100-point questionnaire, obese youngsters scored an average of 67 points -- 16 points lower than in a group of 400 mostly normal weight healthy youngsters. The obese children's scores were similar to quality of life self-ratings from a previously published study of about 100 paediatric cancer patients. Youngsters were asked to rate things like their ability to walk more than one block, play sports, sleep well, get along with others and keep up in school. Girls and boys appeared to be equally adversely affected by obesity. Youngsters were aged 12 on average, with an average height of 5 feet 1 inch and average weight of 174 pounds. All had a body-mass index that would be considered obese. Obesity-related ailments were common and included fatty liver disease, obstructive sleep apnoea, diabetes and orthopaedic problems caused by excess weight. "Even in the absence of these physical conditions, children and parents reported a low quality of life," Schwimmer said. Dr. Nancy Krebs, head of the American Academy of Paediatrics nutrition committee, said the results aren't surprising, given what is known about self-esteem and health problems, in obese youngsters. On the other hand, Krebs said, "It is almost becoming the norm," which may be de-stigmatizing obesity and making it easier for affected children to cope. Still, the prevalence only underscores the need to treat it, she said.

Discovery Discussion Debate

In debate you will have a statement not a question. You have to react to the statement with facts, not opinions. Discussions are based a lot on opinions and answer questions. This is where these two ideas, though similar, are different. Debate is about facts and statements. When you make a statement, from a story, you must consider what the core issue is. If you have made a good outline, you will have this already discovered. This story is from health. The core issue could be; social economic childrens health culture In todays world the topics could range from; Fast food Success and size Education Responsibility Economics These are all good arguments that you would want to research for your argument, or write in your essay. Build the argument starting from Why? Once you have determined the Why? you can find facts to support your idea.

Weight assessments need to be revalued for the new generation. Companies who sell fast food should pay an education tax to help develop
better curriculum to fight obesity.

Access to quality of life items like; internet, cell phones, driving, etc. should
be linked to a persons obesity index. Before you start choose one of the above statements to focus on. Choose a for or against position. Research to find FACTS for your position. List the facts. Write out your argument in a long paragraph format. Include the opposite position in your writing.

You need to write out both sides so you can understand the
other sides argument.
