1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Background of the study Leyte is a relatively unexplored island of the Philippines known for its blue lakes, high mountains and excellent scuba diving but now it is also making a name in the field of sports. Potential athletes are identified in school and provincial meets and then offered scholarship in Leyte Sports Academy (LSA). LSA, a program established in August 2010 after Gov. Carlos Jericho Petilla talked with former PSC executive Dr. Lucrecio Calo on what the province could do for sports after hosting 2009 Palarong Pambansa. As started a high-caliber training for young individuals in swimming, athletics and boxing aside from the usual regular quality academic education. The study focuses on the kind of sport that these scholars enjoy the most. This will give us a hint on what sport should be developed for the athletes to gain interest in it. Getting this information will surely contribute to the development of the less preferred sports and the enhancement of the preferred sports. This is a good move in honing Filipino athlete as the first step for them to achieve their Olympic Dream. Philippines go for gold! Tacloban City--- In the din of the clamor for grassroots sports development, theres actually a two-year-old program here in Leyte that is pinpointing and harnessing young talent in the province that we could learn from. Behind of this academy, the executive director of the Leyte Sports Academy is Mr. Roel Batan is actually a father of three daughters, a gentleman farmer, and a former provincial board member. Today, the academy is housed at the Tacloban Sports Complex and has dormitories, classrooms, a gym, and a boxing workout area.
2 Statement of the Problem The purpose of the study is to identify and analyze the preferred sports of the LSA scholars. Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following questions: 1. What sport do they prefer? 2. What sport do they prefer the most?
Scope and Delimitation This study covers the observation on what sport LSA scholars prefer the most. It is limited only to the scholars in the academy. There were 48 respondents in all.
Statement of Hypothesis Null hypothesis There is no significant relationship between the preferred sports of the LSA scholars. Alternative hypothesis There is a significant relationship between the preferred sports of the LSA scholars.
3 CHAPTER II METHODOLOGY
Research Design This study used the survey approach of research, specifically the descriptive method. Descriptive research is a method to obtain information relating to the current status of an issue or phenomenon to describe what exists within the variables or condition of the situation. It utilized the said approach since the main purpose of this research was to determine the preferred sports of the LSA Scholars. Two most commonly type of descriptive research are survey and observation method. Researchers used survey method to come up w/ a personal description of the answer to the research problem. A survey questionnaire is being floated with the question, What sports do you prefer/enjoy? to be answered by the said scholars. The quantitative research techniques were used to assess and accumulate the data regarding the most and different sports they played.
Locale of the study The respondents of the study were all the levels of the Leyte Sports Academy scholar students. LSA can be found in Tacloban City Grandstand.
Respondents of the study The respondents of the study were all the levels of the Leyte Sports Academy scholar students. There are 48 respondents of LSA. Twenty one boys and twenty seven girls.
Sampling Method PURPOSIVE SAMPLING Used when you want to access a particular subset of people.
4 Purposive sampling starts with a purpose in mind and the sample is thus selected to include people of interest and exclude those who do not suit the purpose.
Research Instruments The data gatherings used in this study were the following: 1. Questionnaires Checklist Form. This instrument was constructed by the researchers to establish the information from the student respondents. The instrument determined, among others, the sports the second year college scholar students played, as the respondents of the survey. Not only have the different sports but as well as the most sports the second year college scholar students prefer/enjoy. 2. Survey Questionnaires for Students. This instrument was used to determine
how many of their second year college scholar students are playing the sports: track running, boxing, badminton, lawn tennis, swimming, or any other kind of sports.
Data Gathering The first step to gather data made by the researchers is to make a letter to conduct a survey noted by our dean and to be approved by the dean of Leyte Sports Academy. After the approval we went to their campus to start distributing the questionnaire to be collected afterwards. Survey questionnaires were prepared and were forwarded to second year college scholar student respondents. The respondents were asked to check the box beside their answer to the corresponding question ask on the survey questionnaire.
Statistical Treatment
Central Tendency When reporting central tendency for a series of measurements, we often use the mean or average value. The symbol for the mean is and for the mode is Mo. The formula for the mean is,
S =
Where, S is variance x is frequency is sample mean
Measurement Standard Deviation This is used often to indicate precision or probable error. The formula for measurement of standard deviation is; the square of the variance or
S =
Where, SD is standard deviation x is frequency is sample mean
6 Where, MD is mean deviation x is frequency is sample mean n is the total number of observation
df = n - 1 Where, T is t-test df is degree of freedom is sample mean is the population mean n is the total number of observation is standard deviation

9 Test of hypothesis
A study made on the different sports in LSA with an average student of 16 and a standard deviation of 6.67. Is there a proof that a sample student of 16 represents the population of students that plays these different sports?
1. 2.
= 16 16
6. Decision: Accept the and reject the , since 0 is lesser than 2.920 and not more than -2.920 at 0.05 level. Therefore, the study made on the different sports in LSA is true.
SUMMARY Sports are all forms of competitive physical activity which is through casual or organized participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical fitness and provide entertainment to participants. Hundreds of sports exist, from those requiring only two participants, through to those with hundreds of simultaneous participants, either in teams or competing as individuals. The survey was conducted in all 48 scholars of the Leyte Sports Academy. Data was gathered through questionnaire check form.
CONCLUSION Scholars have only three different sports they can play. The track running, swimming, and boxing. There were 54% of the LSA scholars who prefer to play for track running, 29% for swimming, and 17% for boxing. In the measure of central tendency, the computed sample mean was 16 as well as the population mean and a computed mode of 26. In the measure of variability, the computed mean deviation was 6.67, a computed variance of 84, and a computed standard deviation of 9.17. According to the test of hypothesis, it falls to be true because the 0 is lesser than 2.920 and not more than -2.920 at 0.05 level. Therefore, the study made on the different sports in LSA is true.
RECOMMENDATION In playing sport, you should not only have the skills, you should always bare in mind which sport you could play the best and best suited for you.
