Presidents Message:
As the year 2012 comes to a close, I hope everyones was a great one and that the New Year will bring all good fortune and health. The year 2012 has been an up and down year for California State Parks and the SPBVAnot knowing if we were going to be closed down or not. Thankfully, all parks have been taken off the chopping block for the time being and it has been business as usual for us. On December 2, 2012, we held the annual re-enactment of the Battle of San Pasqual. You could not have asked for better weather, for the day was bright and sunny after threatening to rain. There are too many people to
by Tom Vilicich thank individually, but a big THANK YOU to all the re-enactors, the volunteers, and the park staff. I would also like to give a special THANK YOU to the Boy Scouts who directed traffic in the parking area, and JROTC from Kearny High School for their participation in the flag raising ceremony. To all who filled out the Save Our State Park postcards, THANK YOU. We did get a response to them; this effort did let the politicians and people in Sacramento know that the citizens of California do not like it when you mess with their parks. Keep an eye out in Battlelines for upcoming events throughout the year.

Off the
Shelf...
by Shirley Buskirk more years. We were scheduled to close July 1, 2012, so Im not sure just when that two years ends. But Im hopeful that something will come up by that time to keep us open permanently. And the best present, as far as Im concerned, was that I was told I could reorder all those books weve run out of. Instead of the normal 69 items for sale, we are down to 37. So, when the new budget begins in January, Ill be busy restocking those shelves. Books about historyabout the Indians, the Spanish occupation, Mexicos independence and California as part of the United Statesbooks about the war and the battle fought herebiographies, childrens books, medallions and miniature cannons, maps and documents. Theres lots more, but youll have to wait for another issueIve run out of room. Happy 2013! And start planning your trip to our newly restocked bookstore.

It will be 2013 when you read this, but Im writing it just seven days before Christmas. I just put my cards in the mail and tomorrow I start shopping. Next week, the house will be full of people, each with a stocking hung over the fireplace. This year there will be 17 and the recipients range in age from 10 to 91. They come from Oregon, Arizona and from Germany comes Patrick, an exchange student. When the floor is completely covered with discarded wrapping paper, we will all leave. A few go home to rest, while others head for their in-laws and a big turkey dinner. Ill join the other half of the family in San Diego, where we feast on homemade ravioli. Its traditionaland delicious. You are probably wondering what this has to do with the bookstore at the Battlefield. Well, Ill tell you. The State has given San Pasqual a great Christmas presenta promise to stay open for two
