O. D. Mande
Astrology is a divine subject which is invariably used ,inter-alia,to make predictions concerning individuals as well as mundane entities like weather ,prices of precious metals , industrial houses , Governments , nations etc. etc. Making correct prediction is a complex job and therefore an astrologer known for making correct predictions becomes respectable in society. A systematic approach to make a prediction would involve four stages viz. examination of horoscope( birth chart , navamsa chart ,relevant divisional charts ,assessment of planetary strengths, ashtakavarga ,yogas etc) and use of appropriate dasas for broad timing of event , resort to varshaphal technique ( Tajik/Tithi Pravesh /Yoga Pravesh) for closer timing and application of planetary transit dicta. This is a time consuming procedure which may take up to two hours even for experienced astrologers. Therefore busy astrologers generally restrict the astrological examination to birth chart, Moon chart ( and perhaps navamsa chart) , vimsottari dasa and application of their favourite thumb rules of planetary transit. With such short-cut method it may not always be possible to go close to the time of predicted event. For planetary transits alone there are different options viz. single planet transit , double transit , triple transit etc. In this context the author would like to mention that Sh. P.V.R. Narasimha Rao ,an eminent astrologer , has evolved five principles relating to the effects of transit planets, which are available on the net www.vedicastrologer.org/articles. One of them is Padamsas and Transits( Feb 2010) which means activation of longitude based padas (arudhs) of relevant houses by transit planets ,resulting in the fructification of a predicted event. This is somewhat similar to Latta of transit planets on janma nakshtra but far more versatile and precise. The author has been using this principle for nearly two years and found it very efficacious . The principle is as aunder At the time of a major event in life an important planet has a close conjuction with , or close aspect on the natal divisional longitude of the arudh pada of a relevant house, in a relevant divisional chart . Nakshtra mahadasa lord or antardasa lord or a planet related to that house in the natal rasi (birth) or divisional chart may be considered for transits. Sh Narasimha Rao suggests that not only full but 3/4th aspect may also be considered. He also recommends use of Jagannath ayanamsa for computing longitude based padas.
Calculation of Pada.
Before going through examples illustrating the efficacy of this principle it is essential to understand the meaning of longitude based pada (arudh) in birth chart and divisional charts. Normally pada is sign based and has no longitude. But pada can have exact longitude like planets . To calculate longitude based pada one has to proceed as follows. Take the longitude of the cusp of a house. Take the distance from it to the planet owning the sign where the cusp is placed . Take the same distance from the planet. The point thus arrived at is the pada of the house. If the pada is between 00 -- 300 or between 1800 -- 2100 range from the cusp of the house, subtract three signs (900) from it. Alternatively , add nine signs to it . This is analogous to shifting the sign based pada forward by nine houses if it falls in the same house or in the seventh from it.
Example Suppose lagna is at 5Cn 8 , Moon is at 27 Leo 12 and Sun is at 9Sc15 . Let us find the padas of the first and second houses. In this method lagna is treated as the start of first house and all houses are of 300 each. The same criterion applies to the houses from a planet. The distance from 5Cn 8 to 27Leo12 is 1s 220 4. Adding this to 27Leo12 we get 19Li16. This is not in the 00 ---300 or 18002100 range from 5Cn4. So we do not subtract 900 from it . Pada of first house i.e. (AL) is at 19Li16. The second house extends from 5Leo8 to 5Vi8 and the cusp of this house at 5Le8. The lord of second house is Sun at 9Sc15 . The distance from 5Leo8 to 9Sc15 is 3s 40 7. Adding this to 9Sc15 we get 13Aq 22. This is in the 18002100 range from 5Leo8. So, we subtract three signs and get 13Sc22 as the pada (A2) of the second house.
Illustrative Examples.
Any new predictive principle is likely to appear unconvincing unless its efficacy is illustrated through a variety of real life examples. Some real life examples are described below . In this principle the focus is on
3 the impact of transit planets on padamsas ( longitudes of padas ) in divisional charts. The planets posited in them generally have no role . Therefore the related charts are not given. However, the birth data of natives are given to enable the interested readers to cast the charts for further study.
Example 1 : Marriage
Female ( 15 Feb 1981 , 5: 28 PM, 82E13 , 22N5 . India) The horoscope of this girl was examined by the author in August 2008 and it was predicted that she would be married during the period Nov 2Dec25, 2009 and possibly during the window Dec 413 , 2009. She was married on Dec12, 2009. The pada of the 12thhouse from ascendant i.e UL(As) ,as mapped in natal D-9 chart is at 8Ge27 whereas such pada from Moon i.e. UL(Mo) is at 27Ge25. The native was running Sat Rahu dasa at the time of marriage. On Dec12 , 2009 , transit Rahu at 28Sg42 had a close 7th aspect (impact) on UL(Mo) while transit Saturn at 9Vi42 had a close 10th aspect (impact) on UL(As).
Example 2 : Marriage
Male ( Sept 9, 1972 . 12:15 PM. Vadodara .India). He was married on Dec28, 2000. The native was running RahuVenus dasa at the time of marriage. The padas of 12th house from Lagna , Moon and Venus (as mapped in D-9 ) were worked out but none of them were activated by transit planets on the day of natives marriage. So the author rectified the birth time as 12:17 PM by trial and error. The UL(As) was found to be 28Ar48 . On the day of marriage transit Venus at 28Cp58 had a close 3/4th aspect (impact) on UL(As). Saturn occupies 7th house in natal birth chart and 11th house of gain in natal D-9 chart. So Saturn is an important planet regarding marriage . Transit Saturn at 0Ta 53 had a close conjunction with UL(As).
3.1: Marriage In natal D-9 chart UL(Ve) and UL(As) are at 26Ta49 and 17Aq34 respectively. The running
dasa at the time of marriage was Mercury -Moon-Venus. On May 13 , 1994 transit Venus was at 27Ta18 and closely conjoined UL(Ve). Transit Saturn ( lord of seventh house in birth chart ) was at 17Aq18 and closely conjoined UL(As).
3.2 : End of Marriage The natives marriage came to an end at the end of Dec 1995. UL shows marriage .
So ,the second , seventh and twelfth from UL i.e AL, A6, and A11 would show end of marriage. In natal D-9
4 chart , AL from Ascendant , A6 from Moon , AL from Moon and A11 from Ascendant are at 2Le22 , 5Ge21 , 5Pi21 , and 27Le21 respectively . The running dasa at that time was Mercury--Rahu--Jupiter. At the end of Dec 1995 transit Mercury was at 2Cp10 and had a close 3/4 th aspect on A11(As) , transit Jupiter at 5Sg6 closely aspected A6(Mo) and had 3/4 th (fourth) aspect on AL( Mo), and transit Rahu at 29Vi43 had a close ( 12th) aspect on A11(As) .
3.3: Back to parental house. The girl left husbands house at the end of Dec 1995 and returned to the
parental house. In natal D-4 chart, fourth house shows parental house (Maayka) , tenth house shows husbands house ( Sasural) and so the ninth house would show departure from Sasural. In natal D-4 chart A9(Mo) and A4(Ve) are at 24Pi10 and 27Cp27 respectively. Both these padas were activated by transit Rahu at 29Vi43, by seventh and fifth aspects respectively , at the end of Dec 1995.
After returning to the parental house the girl got a formal divorce in due course. Subsequently she left for USA and took up a job. Her elders tried to persuade her for remarriage from time to tome but she did not entertain such talk for many years. Sometime in the year 2009 her mother approached the author with the girls ( who had become a 39 year old lady) horoscope and asked whether and when she would remarry. After examining the horoscope the author indicated that she was very likely to remarry in 2010 around May. She got remarried to a doctor(who too is a widower) in May 2010. Upapada Lagna ( UL) shows the first marriage . So the eighth from UL i.e. UL2 ( same as A7) would show second marriage. In the natal D -9 chart UL2 (A7) from Venus is at 22Sc51. The running dasa was VenusVenusSun. Transit Venus at 22Ta 23 had a close seventh aspect on UL2 while transit Sun at 24Ar1 had a close 3/4 th( eighth) aspect on it.
3.4: Remarriage
Example 4: Engagement
Female (Sept 5 , 1983, 4:58 PM, Delhi) This girl got engaged on July 5 , 2012 . The engagement ceremony was conducted during 3 PM to 5 PM on that day. In natal D-9 chart, A5 from Ascendant is at 16Li6. The native was running the dasa Venus Mercury. On Jul 7 transit Mercury had a close 3/4 th ( i.e. fourth ) aspect on A5(As). But the engagement was actually done on Jul 5. So the author modified the birth time of native (by trial and error) as 5:1:30 PM which gave the revised A5(As) as 15Li 2. This pada was activated by transit Mercury on July 5 during 3PM to 5 PM when the engagement ceremony was conducted. Needless to say that some more events from natives life need to be put to test to firm up the correction in birth time.
5 The horoscope of this girl was examined by the author sometime in the year 2009. It was apprehended that her groom may be of loose character. The pardara saham computed taking the seventh house as lagna strengthened this apprehension. So the girls parents were advised to be particular about verifying the grooms character before fixing the marriage. The natives parents had been trying to find a suitable match for the last three years and so they might forgotten the authors words of caution . In June 2012 they met with success and so the girls Roka ( preliminary engagement) was done on June 17, 2012. In the following days they came to know that the groom was a characterless boy. Due to this shocking discovery , the engagement was cancelled on July 12 , 2012.. In the natal D-9 chart , A5 from Ascendant is at 23Sg35 and A6 from Moon is at 10Pi42. ( Sixth house is maarak for fifth house) .The native was running Jupiter-Mercury-Mars dasa. On the day of Roka transit Mercury at 23Ge8 had a close seventh aspect on A5(As). On July 12, 2012 transit Mars at 10Vi31 had a close seventh aspect on A6 (Mo).
Example 6: Childbirth
Female ( April 14, 1975 , 12:50 PM , Delhi )
6.1 The native had a child on January 14 , 2006. In the horoscope of this native Jupiter ( Kaarak for children )
occupies Pisces sign in the ninth house of birth chart and Sagittarius sign in the ninth house of Saptamsa chart. So, Jupiter is bhava-vargottam and hence specially important for Saptamsa chart. In D-7 chart , the pada of fifth house from Moon i.e.A5(Mo) is at 22Aq9. On Janury 14 ,2006 transit Jupiter at 21Li18 had a close fifth aspect on A5(Mo).
6.2 The natives horoscope was examined by the author towards the end of 2007. The examination
indicated a strong possibility of second childbirth to the native before Nov 2008. The native had second child on September 14, 2008 . The running dasa was Rahuvenus. On that day transit Rahu at 22Cp45 had a close 12th aspect ( antizodiacally) on A5(Mo). Transit Venus at 0Sc14 had 3/4th(eighth) aspect on A5(Jup) at 2Ge10
6 hence can be taken as the dispenser of justice(Court) and a special Kaarak (bestower) of progeny in this case of paternity suit. Accordingly , A5 from Venus was expected to be the appropriate pada. In D-7 chart , A5( Ve) is seen to be at 26Sg29. On July 27, 2012 ( when the verdict was delivered ) this pada did have an extremely close 3/4 th ( i.e.eighth ) aspect of transit Venus at 26Ta 27. It is indeed amazing to see the efficacy of Padamsas & Transits principle even in this rare and peculiar example of childbirth !
The native is working in a Multinational Company. In the year 2010 she was expecting a good raise in her salary but it was getting delayed for some reason or the other. In April 2010 she requested the author to examine her horoscope in this context. After examining the horoscope( varshaphal chart) she was told that her much awaited salary hike was very likely to materialize in June 2010 . She did get a 70% salary -raise with effect from June 1 , 2010 as predicted. The native was running Ketu-Jupiter dasa at that time. In natal Kashinath Hora (D-2 KN) chart , A11( Me) is at 5Pi4 , A11(Mo) at 5Ge39 and A11(As) at 2Vi23. On Jun 1, 2010 transit Jupiter at 5Pi15 closely conjoined A11( Me) , had 3/4 th (fourth) aspect on A11(Mo) and full aspect on A11(As). The relevant padas of natal D-10 chart were also activated.
The native was the Chief Manager of Union Bank of India , Naraina , New Delhi. In February 2010 he was expecting his promotion as Dy General Manager very shortly ; within 2-3 weeks. As requested by him his horoscope ( Tajik varshaphal ) was examined by the author and he was told that the promotion would materialize in June 2010 . He did not believe this because he was confident of getting it within a few weeks. But his promotion case got delayed for some reason or the other and finally he got the promotion letter in the fourth week of Jun 2010 as predicted. In natal D-10 chart , Arudh LagnaL(Mo) is at 14Cn38, Ghati Lagna at 12Cn 20, and A10(Mo) at 5Pi 49.m The running dasa was SaturnVenus. In Jun. 2010 (fourth week ) transit Saturn at 4Vi15 had a close seventh aspect on A10(Mo), transit Venus at 14Cn53 closely conjoined Arudh Lagna(Mo) and Ghati Lagna.
7 posited in the third house of change of residence. On 4, July 2010 when the native left for Lucknow , transit Rahu was at 17Sg53 and had a very close seventh aspect on A3(Mo).
Example12 : Employment
The native of example 12 got another job on April 1 , 2009. In the natal D-10 chart A6( job) from Ascendant is 24Le17, and A6 from Mercury is at 13Le20. The running dasa was Rahu-Jupiter. On April 1, 2009 transit Rahu at 12Cp12 had a close 3/4th aspect on A6(Me) and transit Jupiter at 25Cp7 had a close 3/4 th ( eighth) aspect on A6(As).Transit Saturn ( an important planet in D -10 chart) was at 22Le7 and closely conjoined A6(As).
The native has completed Bachelors Degree course in Biotechnology this year ( 2012) and was on the look out for a job. At the request of his mother the author examined the natives horoscope sometime in April 2012 and indicated that he would get employed in the second fortnight of June 2012. He got a job offer around mid June but was hesitant to accept it due to low salary . The author advised him to accept the offer and also be on the lookout for a better job. He accepted the job offer on June 20 , 2012. In natal D-10 chart , pada of the sixth house from lagna i.e. A6(As) is at 12Sc5 . The running dasa was Venus Venus . On June 20 transit Venus was at 14Ta36 and had a close seventh aspect on A6(As) . Venus, being retrograde at that time, was approaching A6 longitude but became direct on June 27 before touching it.Nevertheless this event did take place. Why? Because a planet , while turning from retrograde to direct or vice versa , becomes powerful in giving results. Sh Narasimha Rao has dealt with this issue in a separate article titled Stationary Planets in Transit.
Conclusion
A good number of examples covering different types of real life events have been given to illustrate the efficacy of Padamsas &Transits principle . The principle is not supposed to be used in isolation but in conjunction with other principles. It is not meant to replace established methods of Jyotish but to increase ones confidence in timing of an event or narrow down when there is a large window based on traditional techniques. A proper approach for timing of event would be to analyse birth chart & divisional charts first, followed by varshaphal chart analysis for closer timing and , at the end , application of this transit principle. A prediction which satisfies all the three criteria would have very high probability of coming true. The author has been using this principle for over one and a half years and found it very reliable. It can also be used to carry out birth time rectification as illustrated in examples 2 and 4.
