DOUBLE GLAZING

Double the glass, half the energy cost

SmartGlass InsulVue double glazing makes rooms more comfortable and saves energy by halving the amount of heat conducted through windows. Double glazed windows also reduce noise, condensation and drafts. Installing SmartGlass InsulVue is the best way to get ready for new laws and standards that will require South African property owners to ensure their buildings are energy efcient.

What makes InsulVue double glazing smart

SmartGlass InsulVue double glazing units are manufactured from two panes of glass held apart by a metal spacer, with dehydrated air trapped between the glass panes. InsulVue double glazing units can be custom-made with various glass combinations and coatings that offer a wide range of insulation performance characteristics and appearances. InsulVue can also make your home safer and help keep intruders out. The additional performance features you choose will depend on your unique requirements. Maximum savings with low E coatings You get the best energy savings when you install SmartGlass InsulVue with special low emissivity (low E) coatings. A low E coating helps to insulate your home from the cold, and reduces the radiator effect that occurs when glass absorbs solar heat and radiates it back into a building.

New laws and standards for energy efcient housing

Government has plans in place to improve South Africas energy efciency radically within the next few years. New buildings will have to comply with strict standards, and property owners may need to upgrade existing buildings. You can save money now and well into the future by investing in energy efcient smart building materials such as double glazing and insulating frames. The building materials you choose play an important role in the energy efciency of your home. For example, ordinary glass can be responsible for up to 40% of the energy lost through doors and windows. High performance glass products offer a practical and elegant way to improve energy efciency and make a home more comfortable all year round. With double glazing installed in a draft-free insulating frame, you can get 50% off your heating energy bill. At the same time you help the environment by cutting harmful carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in half. You can also cut the cost of articial lighting by using glass expansively to make the most of the natural light and views. Standards South Africa is already working on new regulations that will require architects, building contractors and property owners to pay close attention to the energy efciency of all types of buildings. During March 2005 the Department of Minerals and Energy announced that these standards will become part of the National Building Regulations by 2008. Thats when the new SANS 283 standard for energy efcient housing will become law.

Research proves you can save with double glazing

Scientists have proved that SmartGlass InsulVue high performance double glazing can improve the comfort in a building and save energy. Researchers compared energy costs and CO2 emissions of a typical 250 square metre double storey house tted with ordinary 3 mm or 4 mm glass versus the same house tted with optimum double glazing in a draft-free insulating framing system. They calculated the energy and carbon dioxide needed to maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the year in three typically South African climate types: highveld (Johannesburg, Pretoria, Bloemfontein, Polokwane); coastal winter rainfall (Cape Town, George, Port Elizabeth) lowveld & coastal summer rainfall (Nelspruit, Durban, Pietermaritzburg). These three regions represent climates which are roughly equally split between heating and cooling requirements (highveld), predominantly heating requirements (coastal winter rainfall) and predominantly cooling requirements (lowveld and coastal summer rainfall).

Choose the right InsulVue double glazing for your home

To make sure you get the best energy efciency, always keep in mind where your glass will be used. Use the tips below as a guideline. North facing windows You can use a minimal overhang to protect the northern facade from direct summer sun, and still allow the sun to heat a home naturally during winter. The shading device must be designed to account for the location of the house (Cape Town is different to Johannesburg). InsulVue with a clear outer glass and a Low E inner glass is ideal. If there is no summer shade, an E Range outer glass and a clear inner glass would be more suitable. West facing windows Windows on the west side of a building are difcult to shade, and they add high solar radiation levels during the hottest part of the day. The challenge is to eliminate solar heat and provide effective insulation without reducing natural light too much. Use InsulVue with an E Range outer glass incorporating a heat eliminating coating or tint and a Low E inner glass. Roof lights and sky lights Normally roof lights and sky lights are exposed to direct sunlight for longer than vertical windows. They therefore let in more light and heat, lose more heat in winter and can cause condensation if not properly insulated. A Low E inner glass can prevent condensation and improve insulation. The outer may generally be clear glass if the area is small in relation to the room below. If the area is large and the room is used as more than a transit space then a high heat elimination product such as Solarshield would be required. Brighter spaces can be created with SolarVue and ColourVue outer glass. The best light-to-heat compromise can be achieved with a CoolVue outer glass.

South facing windows South facing windows get little or no direct sun, and can be used to maximise natural light and save electric lights. To maximise insulation and keep heat in during winter, select double glazing with clear glass on the outside and Low E glass on the inside. East facing windows East facing windows get lots of morning sun in winter and summer. Because the sun is low in the sky, it is very difcult to shade the windows without obscuring the view and the natural light. In winter an east facing window will lose heat during the second half of the day. To compensate for these effects, choose InsulVue double glazing with high light transmission and high heat elimination. The ideal solution is a unit with a CoolVue coating on the outside and an E Range Low E glass on the inside. A lower cost compromise is to use E Range instead of CoolVue for the outer glass.

COATINGS
SmartGlass InsulVue double glazing is available with laminated and toughened safety glass, and various coating options. The coatings you select will depend on where the InsulVue units will be installed. CoolVue coatings let in up to 70% of visible light while blocking more than 50% of solar heat. E Range coatings (Low E and Solar E) offer outstanding thermal insulation all year round. Solarshield reective coatings are designed for maximum solar heat control. SolarVue coatings provide medium solar control and a neutral, low-reective appearance.
