Latino to Watch LatinO de impacto

By Raquel Serrano Mr. Ramirez inspires. After school hours, I walked into the school building to conduct an interview and immediately felt at ease. The security staff directed me to the administrative area. It was filled with the usual countertop, paperwork, filing cabinets, publications, posters and so forth. Mr. Ramirez warmly greeted me and invited me into his office. It had been a long day for him but he said this was the norm; he would stay until late to answer emails and do follow-ups. I sat at the small conference table directly across his desk computer, documents, photos, and an un-opened bottle of Vita Coco. It appeared as it was part of his dcor rather than a beverage ready to drink. Experts say a principals office often says a lot about their leadership style. Armando Ramirez is one of 5 siblings raised in Brooklyn, NY of Colombian parents. While his life story is filled with a myriad of disappointments and ironies -- it is the epiphany of believing in oneself, and the dedication of positive role models that helped him overcome statistical disadvantages. He has been an educator for the last 23 years and was asked to work as the Principal at James Monroe High School since last year. Everything hes learned over the years, he tries to share with his students. Ironically, Armandos school days were spent constantly at the principals office. An average D student, achieving the bare minimum, he had no purpose he was just going through the motions to finish high school. While his grade point average was low, his mother asked him what college he was going to attend after graduation. College? None. Motivation? None. SAT scores? Low. Mom would not take this for an answer. Firmly, she advised him to enroll, he had to do something. He managed to attend Stony Brook University. After a short term, he became homesick and dropped out. He got into the truck business and was doing fairly well. Deep down, he always wanted to pursue criminal justice, so he enlisted in the Police Academy but 3 weeks into the program, he broke his leg. Breaking my leg was the best break of my life Mr. Ramirez humorously admits. At 22, he felt his chances in life were doomed. Hopeless and discouraged once again, he didnt know where to turn. It was during this time that he recalls meeting one of his life role-models, Dr. Betsy Balzano. Dr. Balzano is an educator who to this day, Armando looks up to as his guardian angel, his inspiration. Besides his mother, who molded his character and made him into the man that he is today, Betsy caused a big impact in his life. All it took was for her to keenly encourage him scholastically, to show interest in his future. She checked his schedule and drafted one that would meet his goals. While recounting the life-changing moment her words created inside of him, Armando became wistful and reflective. To this day, as an adult, echoing her words causes a sensitive emotion. She told him, I believe in you! His encounters with Dr. Balzano provoked in him the desire to succeed and to not fail. He became an avid researcher and surrounded himself with intelligent and positive individuals. His grade point average began to increase. He went on to The College at Brockport and completed his degree in Criminal Justice with a concentration in Correction and a Certification in Elementary Education. He had received a chance in life, a break in life! Teacher. He also got interested and became involved in the politics of school. He participated and completed the Urban Administrative Program at St. John Fisher where he completed a second Masters in Educational Leadership. Over the years, Mr. Ramirez has worked as a 1st grade and 6th grade teacher, Assistant Principal at Roberto Clemente School No. 8, was an instrumental part as the Director of the transition team from James Madison High School to Joseph C. Wilson Foundation Academy and helped maintain the fidelity of the programs until the closing of John Marshall High School. Most recently, state testing and other assessments revealed that James Monroe High School was a high risk school for closure. This school holds the highest percentage of Latino students enrolled and of pregnancies. When he was asked to take over a failing school, this was not new to Mr. Ramirez; however, the challenge is to turn it around so that it doesnt transition for closure, rather to re-engage students, and make it a model program for the City School District.

Armando Ramirez
key. Mr. Ramirez feels that changes have already started and that results are being noticed. With the revamped Parent Center, attendance audited, establishing a graduation plan for every student, building capacity, empowering his staff and encouraging students has been huge improvements. Being customer service oriented, and maintaining a Student Support Center has been critical, also partnering up with other community programs to name a few, Ibero (Padres Comprometidos), RAPA (Introduction to Theatre), Las Damitas (girls support group), Hillside, Center for Youth and Brockports ETS (Educational Talent Search). Mr. Ramirez empathetically shares that he wants his students to have a suburban experience, for teachers, other city residents and students to aspire to attend Monroe. The deliberate changes are attributed to a great team of educators, office staff, parents and the students themselves. During his journey, Armando has encountered many more people who just like Betsy believe in him. He is appreciative and respectful to School Superintendent, Dr. Bolgen Vargas, for entrusting him with this challenge. Other people of influence who have helped shaped his career have been: Brenda Pacheco (former School of the Arts principal), Anibal Soler (East High School principal) and Anita Murphy (Deputy Superintendent for Administration and Operations and a phenomenal advocate for Latinos). Always surround yourself with intelligent people, he repeats and advises his students. The kid that did not see any future, the youth who thought he had lost it all when he dropped out of college, the man who shifted careers to find his passion could be inside any of us. All that is needed is to allow others to help in our journey and believe enough in oneself to know that me is important. The Vita Coco drink on his desk could just be a symbol. It could be a reminder of where we come from culturally or maybe that despite how life treats you, if you open up the can you can taste that it is nutrient-packed and filled with amazing flavor! Armando Ramirez is married to Maria Vazquez-Ramirez who he lovingly avows is the back-bone of his family; they have two children, Telvanise, 23 and Alexander, 7.

Fry them in oil until lightly browned. Remove and place on a cutting board and flatten. Add the cheese and mix using a spoon and make a circle to make like a pancake. Fry again on both sides until golden brown. Serve the plantain, on top of the salmon with the sauce. Garnish with avocado and coriander (cilantro) or parsley. Why Consider Hospice

By Ida Perez It is interesting that as parents we tend to make so many plans for our children the minute we know we are pregnant; from the clothes our child will wear when they leave the hospital, to the careful selection of the car seat we will purchase. But yet we almost all fail to make the same detailed plans for our death. When I reflect on the recent passing of my 90 year old mother, although funeral arrangements and granting her last wishes were important, I found her last days spent at hospice to be the most prominent part of her journey and the ones that impacted me and my family the most. The truth is that death is a natural process that we will all have to face, so why not plan for it now? According to a recent study on hospice facilities, families dont usually get the support they need. Joan Teno, the author of the study, states that most doctors dont recommend hospice and when they do its usually too late. This became more apparent during the three weeks I was in hospice with my mother. Many of our friends and family did not understand why she was in hospice for so long or the transitions my mother was experiencing; which in reality is the purpose of hospice care. treatment goals will shift from doing everything possible to cure your condition to keeping you comfortable and improving your quality of life while you are dying. Hospice care also helps family members manage the practical details and emotional challenges of caring for a dying loved one. Hospice services are not intended to speed up or prolong the dying process. They focus instead on relieving pain and other symptoms. Hospice caregivers are concerned with enhancing the quality of remaining life by keeping you as alert and comfortable as possible in a familiar environment with family and friends. And this was exactly my mothers journey during her stay with hospice care. During my mothers last days, my siblings and I were equal participants in her care with the guidance and support of the hospice staff. We chose to do hospice care in a facility which was designed to ease our stay there from a private bathroom to a laundry room. We were able to receive and visit with family and friends that came to say their goodbyes to my mother; it was the closest place to her being in her own home.

Felix and Ana Perz start the conversation today. Death and dying is not the most pleasant conversation to have but it is inevitable, so why not make the best of that journey. If you would like more information on hospice care, talk to your primary doctor. If youd like to learn more of my personal experience, send your questions and/ or comments to info@RochesterLaVoz.com; please write on the subject line: HOSPICE

Hospice care also includes helping your family and friends through their grief after you die. Most programs continue to provide bereavement services So what is hospice care? Hospice is a comprehensive for family and friends, such as support groups and program with services for people who are seriously counseling, for at least a year after a loved ones ill and not expected to recover. Hospice care provides death. medical services, emotional support, and spiritual resources. When you decide to be cared for by If you have never given hospice a thought or if a hospice program, you acknowledge that your someone in your family is terminally ill or elderly, 8 15 marzo - 15 abril, 2013 - www.

Any person has the capacity to establish a monthly budget without worrying how much their job allows them to earn in monthly income. Starting from this premise we should focus on the following aspects: Focus on settling smaller debts and not the large ones -- continue the large debts with regular payments. As soon as you settle the small debts you will see that your indebtedness begins to reduce. But if you focus on the large debts, the circle of indebtedness continues and it will take longer to settle without counting on the unexpected. Once you settle the small debts invest that cash on the principal of the larger debts, that way you will save on the interest of the pending payments. Another strategy by which I base the phrase that I dont have enough to save is a fallacy is that we focus on unattainable goals to save in the face of our difficult or real economic situation.

JACKIE ORTIZ INTERVIEW...FROM PREVIOUS PAGE

working on what I would call quality of life issues, stated Ortiz. As you can see, in many of our neighborhoods in the city of Rochester, we deal a lot with the quality of housing in terms of vacant properties, a lot of criminal activity and things like that. So, in that particular area Ive found a way to get at dealing with vacant properties and dealing with some of those issues. I spend a lot of my time on the financing portion of that -- how we dispose of tax delinquent properties. So right now we are undergoing an evaluation of limbo properties and deciding whether that strategy is the right thing to do. The most important part is getting our hands on properties so that we can make quicker decisions. Most recently, because of legislation Ortiz supported which cities in New York State allow to apply for creation of a land bank board; the city was approved to create a not-for-profit land bank corporation as a means to dispose of vacant and abandoned properties. According to Ortiz, this will be an important tool in assisting the city in terms of re-developing neighborhoods. Current plans for Rochesters land bank include buying an average of 25 properties each of the first two years and providing those to the Home Rochester Program which renovates and sells homes to first-time homebuyers. For people in neighborhoods with large concentrations of vacant properties, the impact of putting them back into the hands of homeowners would be huge, said Ortiz. Vacant properties are magnets for criminal activity, she stated. They also hinder the property values in terms of making them stagnant and/ or decreasing them. Here you now would have, if I turn some of those neighborhoods into prospering new homeowners, or theyre gone completely, you now have an area where property values can now rise but we also have eliminated those criminal activity hotspots. Ive talked to a number of different resident groups, and there is loitering; there is actual drug-selling out of those places. There are a number of things that are detrimental to quality of life. In addition to lowering the number of vacant properties in the city, Ortiz said there are other restoration projects on track to begin shortly as well, including the long-awaited La Avenida project in the 14621 area of Rochester. After being in an indeterminate state for more than a year, a condition and economic analysis has recently been updated for the development project in the neighborhood and a new RFP has been created which resulted in the citys consideration of what Ortiz called a solid proposal. It has definitely turned a corner in a number of controversial issues in terms of its ability to actually occur, regards to business permits and the she said. needs of the business community in balance with the needs of the On top of working to restore city residential community. I am anticipating that property one is youth employment. The city values are probably flat, and I am does have a summer of opportunity anticipating that there may be a small program, and right now we are going decrease in criminal activity, but through a revamp and re-evaluation thats not good enough. I dont know of that program. So I think right now exactly what this dollar figure looks is a perfect opportunity for focusing like yet, but I want to do this kind of on bringing more students into that a comparison for this years budget, program and making sure that their because at the end of the day, what experiences are in fact rich, true good is it to spend so much money marketable experiences. Is it the answer completely? No. I dont think it is. I think at this point I would like to see how it works to see if it does alleviate some of the issues. In addition, Ortiz refuted any allegations that the city may in some way be trying to protect RPD officers by creating the CRB. Absolutely not, she said. It is my opinion that if there is inappropriate behavior or activity that it must be dealt with swiftly and appropriately in terms of whatever disciplinary actions need to occur. If we have individuals that are not providing appropriate service and professionalism in dealing with our residents, then they definitely need to be dealt with. As for the red light cameras, according to Ortiz, its an issue of public safety rather than money. It is in my eyes a public safety issue, she said. Does it bring in revenue? Yes, it does. But I really I dont see it that way [in terms of revenues]. I think at the end of the day if were actually learning from those experiences that it did its job. In the end, when it comes to entering the race again, Ortiz said she has a commitment to keeping government transparent; something she thinks will help bring voters out to support her as a democratic candidate again. In my first term I have fought and advocated for open, transparent government. When we talk about giving the public opportunities to actually voice their opinions and be a part of the process, there were many situations where they have asked for that, and I supported and advocated strongly for that open, engaged process of the community, she said. In addition, I feel as though on many of the issues in regards to quality of life, I have found a way to make an impact. And there are strong pieces moving forward that I think are going to be great tools in order to make some real change. Lastly, when we talk about local, minority, womenowned businesses and opportunities given, I vote that way. And I think thats important.

Our food supply: Why should we do more research on it? Part I

By Dr. Yasellyn Diaz When I was growing up I never had to worry about where the food that was provided on our tables came from. I figured most of it was either from our farm or supermarket and that was the end of the story. As an adult now with kids, it is a different story. Their health has inspired me to research more and more about our food supply and how safe it is. The results are shocking! A while ago, I started learning about genetically modified organism (GMO) foods also called genetically engineered foods (GE). Prehistoric farmers have been selecting the most productive plants and seeds from their domesticated crops for up to 10,000 years. What changed in the last quarter of the 20th century was that scientists began selecting traits at the individual gene level and controlling the placement of certain genes in new crops. We should know that we are not only talking about manipulation of the genetic material within plants cells but also within animals, viruses and others. This modification of the genetic material has not occur naturally as natural selection would do it and instead its been done by experimentations in the laboratory with the suppose purpose to make those organisms (whether they are plants, animals or any other) stronger against plant and animal diseases to increase productivity and durability of these products in the store shelves. For example, if the purpose is to make a plant that will resist a specific insect, a gene for a particular toxin from a bacteria or insect will be incorporated into the food plant (whether it is corn, soy or rice -- which are some of the most common foods that are genetically modified). This toxin is used as an insecticide in agriculture and will prevent this plant to get infected with that specific toxin that causes the disease in that plant. Similar utilization of this technology is used in case resistance to viruses is wanted. Genes from those particular viruses are incorporated into the plants that are most affected by them in order to obtain immunity or make the plants less susceptible to the disease those 16 viruses may cause. Monsanto Company which is an American multinational agricultural biotechnology corporation, headquartered in Missouri, is a leading producer of genetically engineered (GE) seed and of the herbicide glyphosate, which markets under the Roundup brand and continues to reassure that If we consider the corn uses and their products are safe. products containing corn such as beer, salad dressing, margarine, flour and, of If you think that there has been course, anything that has corn syrup research to prove that this is safe for we might be consuming GM products human consumption, lets think twice in most of our meals.

Literary Cafe Pablo Coelho The Alquimist

Translated by Steve Farrington This month in The Literary Caf, we read and analyzed one of the most bell-selling books in the recent years, The Alquimist, a Story for Following your Dreams (1988), from the Brazilian writer Paolo Coehlo (born in 1947). Paolo Coelho spent long periods of time studying alchemy in the search of the This book made us into explorers of secret of how to get gold. However, at dreams and also helped us to know a bit the end, he concludes that there are of Andalusia, Spain, and its pilgrimage many ways to make use of our own paths to Santiago. There is no doubt that alchemy to find our own treasure that with literature one can travel to other would be our happiness. cultures and discover the many ways which the human being can travel to find Santiago, in his search took us to him or her-self. discover our own alchemy that refers to the combination of feelings, emotions, The Way of Saint James (Camino de and desires inside of us. Most likely, from Santiago) is a route in Andalusia, Spain, this mix we can get gold or maybe silver where Santiago, the main character, or copper, that will depend on how we starts his pilgrimage and continues until value our achievements in comparison he arrives to the pyramids of Egypt where as his dreams tell him he will find a treasure. Currently, many people travel the Way of Saint James, with goals of traveling as a tourist, to get in shape, to find themselves, and to reflect. with our desires. We also found that each element is important in the universe in which we are part of. This means that all of the designs and goals of life can be beautiful if they are valued for being pieces that form a part of a whole. It was a gratifying experience to share opinions about The Alquimist, and to understand the reason that made it one of the most-read books in the world. We also discovered Paolo Coelho in the character of Santiago since both are seen in the disjunctive set-up of leading a merely religious life induced by his parents. Nevertheless, they turn their back on that life-plan and undertake the search for their own destiny. Santiago is seen as an individual ready to give it all for the chance to follow his dreams and exemplifies a model to follow that is if we desire to find that treasure that we have dreamed of finding. Reflecting on our dreams and the signs that show us our own way to follow, made us question what our quest is and what is happiness. The majority commented that the search or quest is to find our place in the world, and others said that it was the search for happiness. When we spoke of the meaning of happiness some said they were transitory states, something like the various states of feeling. Personally, I think that happiness is being amazed when we find new answers to our existence and to make new discoveries in our journey with those we love.

Interview with Hollywood actor Oscar Torre

I love movies. I love the escape from the real world feeling I get when I watch a great movie, especially when that movie connects with me like the must-see film Counterpunch did. more Latino writers we get, the better written roles for Latinos are gonna be because then you have people who understand the differences in our cultures, even among ourselves, theres differences. For example, a Cuban from Miami and a Cuban from New York or a Cuban from LA will speak in a different dialect. So, imagine all the nationalities, once we get more writers to understand the differences in the different Latino cultures -- that will be a plus. And we are the number one minority right now, so that in itself is money power, and it goes a long way because at the end of the day, its a business, and if you can show that your business makes money, then Hollywood is interested in doing business with you. was shooting that scene and I walked in and saw the character of my mom lying in bed, the moment I kissed her, something happened, it was my mom I connected with, and thats what you look for as an actor, to connect with the material. When a film is released, people see the finished, polished product. Can you give the readers a personal account of what its like for you behind the scenes? I met the Director of Counterpunch, Kenneth Castillo at a party; Mauricio Mendoza introduced me to the him. They had a table read and we read the script and I wasnt reading the character I played, I read the character that Steven Bauer (Scarface) played, they didnt see me as the character I played. They didnt think I was right for that character because they had seen me in Cane so they saw me more like the Steven Bauer character and I thought no, no, Im the uncle, I know this character; I just felt an emotional connection. Some characters just hit you and you know you can play them, so after the read was over I sent the director and Alvaro an email telling them Id really like to play the uncle if they made the movie, and I got a reply which said that they saw me more as the Steven Bauer character. And thats the thing, its hard sometimes to break that idea of how someone sees you. They had seen me in Cane and they didnt see me as the uncle, you know a good guy. So I sent them a letter explaining why they should consider me for the uncle and why I should play the part and how if that part wasnt played right the character wouldnt be likeable, but the letter didnt do it. So a year later, after they secured financing for the movie, they had me read for the uncle and for the character of the boxing promoter in the movie. So, I worked really hard preparing for the uncle. I knew I had to do the uncle better. I had the first audition then I got a call back and they said to come read for the uncle and I got the role, and all that just to get the role. So its a lot that goes on, a lot of preparations. filmmakers. I try to have different projects going on at the same time because you never know which one is going to happen first. I like the idea that I have some control over my career and Im not sitting waiting for that perfect role to be given to me. Later at night Ill watch a film. Many times I choose the film based on what Im working on. Im always looking for inspiration, ideas. Then late at night, after midnight, is when I work on my characters. I tend to feel more creative when its quiet and everyone is sleeping. I really love having a routine but I honestly have to say that no two days look alike in my business. Oscar, I saw your Facebook page Oscar Torre, I like how you use social media to network, tell me about that. I use Facebook and Twitter to post videos, trailers, info., etc. Thats part of marketing and thats a valuable asset that actors or any artists nowadays have that they didnt have in the past, the Internet. A few years back I starred in an episode of Cold Case where I played a baseball star from Cuba who came to the U.S. on a raft and I posted the scenes from that episode on Facebook and YouTube. Somebody saw that, there was a film that was being cast called Legacy, and they were looking for someone specific for one of the lead roles in the film. Someone saw my scenes that I had posted and sent them to the director and I ended up getting the role. But, that would have never happened if I hadnt put the video on Facebook. Oscar, tell the readers about Eenie Meenie Miney Moe. This is a film premiering March 7th at the Miami International Film Festival. I play Jimmy, a powerful South Beach club owner, who is very much into the party scene. It was a challenging role for me to play because on paper he is very unlikeable and Im nothing like him. It was my job to find the similarities and the humanity in the character. Hopefully I accomplished that. Tell me about your directorial debut.

Counterpunch is the story of Emilio, a young boxer struggling to overcome some personal issues with the help of some good folks which include his uncle Frank. The know about this person, what are the similarities that I have with this character and I try to find that. I can tell you like in Santos case, Santo is a totally different character than me, but I did know people like that, who had just come from Cuba. So you look for things that you can identify with and then you find triggers, things you can emotionally connect with in the character. In Santos case, his mother was a big thing. Just like in Counterpunch, the mother was a big part. Im very close to my mother. Ill give you an example, in that scene in Counterpunch where I walk in the hospital and I see my mother and I break down, I had gone through that exact same thing five months before with my mom when she had surgery and I walked in the room, except that I didnt break down with my real mom, I cried afterwards.
Cmo llegar a Paris?
