Inthesummerofxxx,IperformedresearchintheOpticsLaboratoryattheUniversityXYZunderDr.Joe Smith.Thisworkwasfundedbythexxxresearchaward,whichisanationalawardthatisgrantedto undergraduatestudentswithsuperioracademicachievementtoallowthemtoperformresearchina universitylaboratoryduringthesummerterm.Overthesummer,Iperformedthenovelworkthatmy CLEOconferencepresentationisbasedon. SinceIamanundergraduatestudent,itisratherdifficulttoobtainfundingforconferenceexpenses througharesearchgrant.Iamthankful,then,fortheopportunitytoapplyfortheMilton/ChangStudent TravelGrant,whichwouldenablemetomakethetriptoBaltimore.Furthermore,Iamtravellingfrom XYZCityinSampleCountry,andassuchthecostoftravelissignificant.Thiswillbemyfirstopportunity toattendtheCLEOconference,which,accordingtocolleaguesattheXYZUniversity,isaworldclassand prestigiousconference. Iamexcitedtobeginanopticscareer,andIfeelthattheopportunitytosharetheworkIhavedoneand meetwithleadersinthefieldwillbeanexcellentplatformtoestablishmyselfandgainnewinsightinto possibleresearchinterests.IamlookingforwardtoattendingtheCLEOconference,andIkindlyrequest thatthecommitteelooksfavorablyonmyapplication.
