Cutter Care
Cutters should be matintained in a sharp condition to get the best results. Remember, a router is only as good as the cutter fitted to it. A cutter may be kept sharp by selecting correct parameters as follows: 1 2 3 Correct cutter for the material. Correct feed and spindle speeds. Use of some form of lubricant or coolant.

Use of Lubricant or Coolant

Although lubricant or coolant is not always required in cutting a material, it can help to maximise tool life and permit operation in the higher cutting speed ranges, provided that the correct cutting fluid type is used. Listed below are some common materials and the most appropriate fluids for them. Copper, Brass, Bronze: Soluble oil or dry (depending on hardness) Aluminium: Soluble oil or Paraffin Steels or Stainless Steels: Coolant Acrylic and Glass Fibre: Dry Wood based materials: "Dry lubricant" such as PTFE (Trendicote) prevents resin glue build up on the cutter and stops swarf sticking to cutting edges Lubricant or coolant? These two terms are often confused. However, they are not the same. COOLANT is the term applied to soluble oils where dilution in water takes the heat away from the cutter and workpiece. Coolants should be diluted to the manufacturer's instructions and applied as continual spray mist. Where possible, the main jet should be directed at the cutter teeth as they emerge from the cut. This not only cools and lubricates the tool but also washes away the swarf resulting in less recutting and improved edge finish. LUBRICANT is the term applied to neat soluble oils. These are not efficient in removing heat. Soluble oil or paraffin lubricants may be spread or brushed over the surface of the material being cut. PTFE is normally available as an aerosol spray and may likewise be sprayed over the surface of the material or directed by hand periodically at the cutter.

Causes of Cutter Failure

Cutters may deteriorate more quickly than can be reasonably expected for a variety of reasons, and these are listed below. Wrong type of cutter. Select cutter/material combination with care. Feed too fast for diameter of cutter. Match feed, cutter diameter, material. Feed too slow. In some materials (particularly wood) feeding the cutter too slowly will cause friction and burning. Heat is the principal cause of failure (particularly in HSS cutters) because the hardness of the cutting edges becomes affected, resulting in less resistance to wear, and the tool rapidly becomes blunt. Speed of cut too great for a small cutter. It is sometimes advisable to take several shallow passes rather than one deep one. Cutter chipped in the case of TCT or C or worn in the case of HSS. Lack of coolant (where coolant is required). Vibration. This can occur if a cutter has a burr or rough edge on the shank because it leads to imbalance. Overtightening the cutter in the collet can cause this problem, as the collet may become distorted. Loose bearings in the spindle.
