STATEMENT OF BISHOP BROM ELECTION OF POPE FRANCIS

With the Catholic Church worldwide, all of us in the Catholic Diocese of San Diego embrace with love our new universal pastor, Pope Francis. We look to Pope Francis to be a humble instrument of unity and peace in the Church and in the world. We pray that he will be led by the Spirit of Jesus to champion a new evangeliza on in order to place God at the center of all human life and cultures. We pray that he will address problems in the Church and in the world by promo ng those values and prac ces which, true to St. Francis of Assisi, will bring about a civiliza on of love. We an cipate that Pope Francis will manifest the same shepherds care which we found in Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI, and for which we are grateful. March 13, 2013 - San Diego CA

THE FACE OF JESUS

In all the readings for this Sunday we can look at the face of Jesus. There are two Gospel passages, both from the Gospel of Luke. The rst tells of Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey. Crowds greeted him with shouts of "Hosanna!" The second tells of Jesus' departure from Jerusalem, carrying the cross on his back. The same crowds derided him and shouted for his crucixion. We rst see a face shining with glory, but in a few short days a face dark with blood and sorrow. Set between these two contras ng Gospel passages are equally contras ng readings from the Hebrew and Chris an scriptures. Isaiah describes a suering servant who willingly submits to bea ng and humilia on, not even turning away his face. He knows he belongs to God and will not be put to shame. Paul writes to the Philippians of Christ Jesus, the true Suering Servant, who willingly emp ed himself to become human. But this man, with a very human face, has now been exalted by God above all others.

Oh Dios misericordioso, nuestro Pastor y gua, mira con amor a Francisco tu siervo, a quien elegiste como sucesor de san Pedro. Concdele valor, sabidura y clmalo con amor para tu pueblo. Para que l sirva con delidad a todas aquellas personas a quien T le has conado sus cuidados y lleve a tu Iglesia junta en unidad de corazn y voluntad mientras buscamos llevar a su cumplimiento la misin de Tu Hijo, Jesucristo, nuestro Seor, quien vive y reina con go y el Espritu Santo por los siglos de los siglos. PREGUNTA DE LA SEMANA
Cmo tu parroquia ayuda a personas inocentes que sufren?

EL ROSTRO DE JESS
En todas las lecturas de este domingo vemos el rostro de Jess. Hay dos pasajes del Evangelio, ambos del Evangelio de Lucas. El primero nos narra la entrada triunfal de Jess en Jerusaln montado en un burro y la mul tud gritando a voz en cuello: Hosanna! El segundo nos relata su salida de Jerusaln cargando la cruz. La misma mul tud se burla y pide su crucixin. Primero vemos un rostro radiante de gloria, pero pocos das despus lo vemos cubierto de sangre y de dolor. Entre estos dos contrastantes pasajes del Evangelio escuchamos lecturas igualmente contrastantes de las Escrituras hebreas y cris anas. Isaas describe a un siervo que, sin resis r, ofrece sus espaldas a los que le golpean. l sabe que Yahv es su Seor y que no ser avergonzado. Pablo escribe a los lipenses sobre Cristo Jess, el verdadero servidor que, siendo de condicin divina, no se aferr a su igualdad con Dios sino que se despoj de ella y lleg a ser semejante a los hombres. Pero a este hombre, con un rostro tan humano, Dios lo engrandeci y le concedi el Nombre que est sobre todo nombre.
