I. INTRODUCTION

Danny Boyles film Slumdog Millionaire is a film that shows on how destiny works on the two main character of the film. At the beginning of the film, there is a question on how Jamal Malik reaches the stage in which hes one stage away from the grand prize , suggesting four possible answers which are: A) He Cheated B) Hes Lucky C) Hes a Genius or D) Its Written. At the end of the film, the correct answer is revealed as D) Its Written. Its written or it is destined for Jamal to win. The story illustrate the destiny of the two main characters (Jamal and Latika), that goes through a lot of sufferings from their childhood until adulthood, causing them to part ways. But the story doesnt end there; Jamal who is madly in love with Latika will do anything just to find her. That is the reason why he joined the game show Who wants to be a millionaire because he knows that Latika will be watching it. In the end of the film, the two still found each other because its their destiny.

II. CHARACTERS / SETTING

A. Did the main characters portray their role the way they should? (Jamal and Latika)? Jamal Malik As for me, Dave Patel (adult Jamal), Tanay Chheda (teen Jamal), and Ayush Mahesh Khedekar (young Jamal), portrayed their role as Jamal Malik the way

they should. Theyve captured the heart and minds of every viewer who watched the film and because of that they became well-known for portraying the role of male lead character in the movie.

Latika Like the actors who portrayed the role of Jamal, Freida Pinto (adult Latika), Tanvi Ganesh Lonkar (teen Latika), and Rubina Ali (young Latika) also portrayed the role of Latika the way they should. Freida Pinto even won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for portraying the role of Latika in the movie . B. Complete Description of the Setting (Mumbai, India). The city Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) is one of the largest cities in India. The lure of jobs in the city is a huge pull on those living in rural areas. Migration into the city of Mumbai continues to grow at exponential rates each year. As a result, there has been a disproportionate rise of slums and overcrowding in the city. Mumbai holds the dubious record of being the slum capital of the world. The population of Mumbai is approximately 12 million people. In Mumbai, almost 60% of the total population lives in slums. The some of the scenes in the movie were filmed in Dharavi, the largest slum in Mumbai.

In Mumbai, the rich own 90% of the land, whilethe poor are overcrowded in the remaining 10%.

III. PLOT A. Conflict The conflict in the story is when Jamal was charged of cheating. As an uneducated teenager from the slums, he is being belittled by the presenter of the show and the police inspector. He has to make them believe that he knew the answers because of his experiences. B. Conflict Resolution The story focuses on how Jamal Malik knew the answers in the questions in Who wants to be a millionaire. He has to prove that hes innocent and he didnt cheat at all. In every stage he played, he is being interviewed by the police inspector, and he then tells the reason behind he knows all the answers to the questions. In the end, the police inspector then believed that Jamal Malik is innocent and he then let him back to the show.

IV. CONTRAST FOUND IN THE TITLE SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE A Slumdog is a person who lives in a poor makeshift locality in extremely dirty conditions like a stray dog. While a Millionaire is a person whose wealth amount to million or more in some unit of currency. The title Slumdog Millionaire basically means from rags-to-riches story of Jamal Malik, a boy from Mumbai slum. The main character of the story has a goal of finding

his one true love, Latika. With the belief that Latika would be watching, he then joined the contest Who wants to be a millionaire, and he then won the grand price.

V. REFLECTION

The movie Slumdog Millionaire has many similarities in our country. For example, many people is being belittled nowadays because they came from a poor family. Some of them are being tortured and killed and they cant have justice. The film also depicts on how criminals uses children to earn money, which I believe to be happening also here in our country. It also shows on how Salim (brother of Jamal) joined a group of gangster for protection against the other group, which some of us is also doing. The story revolves around poverty. Because of poverty, Salim joined a group of gangster to have a better life and protection against the other group of gangster. Because of poverty, Jamal didnt have the chance to go to school, resulting to him being belittled and charged of cheating by the police inspector and the gameshow host. Poverty is the main reason why some of the people didnt achieve justice and why some people became criminals, because they have no choice. The main character (Jamal) participated in the contest because of his determination to find his one true love (Latika). He joined the contest because he knows that Latika would be watching him. And in the end, they still find each other because it is destined to be.
