Swine Flu: Prepare, Protect, Pull Through

I asked integrative physician Alexa Fleckenstein, M.D., how to protect ourselves from swine flu, and what to do if we get it. Here is her response: NOTE: Advice on this blog in no way replaces consultation with a physician. Always consult with your doctor before following online advice. So far, I think we are dealing with an epidemic that has not the makings of the pandemic of 1918/19 where young people died in droves, often within the first 24 hours. Still, the elderly and immune-incompetent patients might be at risk. The causes of death in influenza are of two different origins: Older people die of the virus and its consequences like pneumonia; their weakened immune systems cannot fight the virus anymore. Young people succumb to an overreaction of their still-exuberant immune systems. We call this a cytokine storm, usually within the first two days. If you get seriously sick, consult a physician. Officials recommend Tamiflu (oseltamivir, a neuraminidase inhibitor) but there are no good studies for the swine flu and Tamiflu. Against regular influenza A and B, Tamiflus performance has been rather disappointing especially in the elderly, who would be prime targets for the drug. In addition, a tendency to suicide has been reported with Tamiflu in Japan so bad that its use is discouraged in young people under 19. Furthermore, in case of an epidemic, Tamiflu might be in short supply. So, lets look into some simple natural remedies this is what I do for myself and my family: The Three Ps: Prepare, Protect, Pull through. Prepare: This website is all about owning your good health. If you have used the Five Health Essentials (water, movement, food, herbs, order) you should be in good shape to start with. If not it is never too late to start cold showers and get plenty of sleep. For those may be new to the topic, here is a summary of the Health Essentials: - End every warm shower or bath with a cold shower. This increases immunity.

- Drink enough fluid, hot or warm water about seven glasses per day; more if you exercise. Herbal teas are good; juices are not. - Eat as healthily as you can with vegetables (cooked and raw), mushrooms (never raw!) fruit, nuts, whole grains, legumes (beans, lentils, garbanzos) and fish. Cut down on meats and buy organically whenever possible. Stop eating processed, artificial, canned, micro-waved and fried food. Avoid sugars, white starches and dairy altogether. Only with healthy fare is your immune system able to fight the invaders. - Exercise moderately. Excess is as detrimental as laziness. If you are still a couch potato, now it is time to change your ways. Start with two minutes a day on any machine that is gathering dust in your basement. Or make it a habit to go for a walk every day for 10 minutes (You may do more but not less). - Expose yourself to light daily. Light (not direct sun) is beneficial for your immune system. Against direct sun, wear sunglasses, a hat and long-sleeved garb. - Get enough sleep. We come down with a cold if we are run down. Dont set your body up for a catastrophe: Go to bed between 9.30 and 10.30 pm. The body repairs itself during about two hours the time around midnight if you are asleep then, that is. - Take tonic herbs like astragalus, ashwaganda and Eleuthero to strengthen your immune system. Rotate them. - If you are not eating mushrooms often, take a mushroom supplement (shiitake, reishi, maitake either one is good alone or in combination). Protect yourself during an outbreak: Continue your good work from the Prepare section and: - Avoid crowds, public transportation and all unnecessary contact with people. Whenever you meet people, wear a surgical mask or a light cotton cloth over nose and mouth, sprinkled with a drop of essential oil like eucalyptus, oregano, myrrh. Or smear a pea-sized glob of Vicks on it. - Dont hug, kiss or shake hands - Avoid touching public doorknobs or surfaces with your ungloved hands - Wear gloves in public; wash them often. Wash hands often with soap and water

- Gargle frequently (hourly) with a mouthwash or a tea made from sage. I like 1 drop of tea tree oil in a glass of lukewarm water. - Rinse your nose frequently (hourly) with saltwater: 1/4 teaspoon of sugarless salt in one glass of lukewarm water. Snuff the water up from your hand; use a dropper on little children. - Spice up your food with herbs and spices because they kill microbes (the plants developed the strong-tasting compounds to protect themselves against the invasion of bacteria, viruses and fungi). Pregnant women and little children should go easy on herbs and spices. - Take a teaspoon of raw honey after exposure. Not for children under two years because of the danger of botulism. - Nibble on cloves of fresh garlic throughout the day, especially when you are out and about. Use garlic (fresh or dried) freely in your cooking. Same with onions. - Use an Echinacea throat spray every hour, or swish three drops of Echinacea in your mouth (contraindicated in autoimmune disease). - Chew on juniper berry. Add one berry every day, up to five, then take one away again every day. This is the formula: 1-2-3-4-5-4-32-1. Not recommended in kidney disease. - Sleep a lot, do meditation, be quiet and do something that lifts your heart like making music, painting, gardening. Find your center. Pull through: If you become infected, go to your doctor and ask about the following suggestions: Continue most of the measures from Prepare and Protect but stop all exercise. Now is time for bed rest. - With the first symptoms take the Chinese preparation Yin Qiao (later it is no longer useful ) (three tablets four times a day). After you feel improvement, take one tablet three times a day for another week - Avoid all contact with others to not spread the disease. - Continue taking garlic, Echinacea and honey. Add of these herbs (whatever you have at hand: Andrographis paniculata (or any combination preparation that contains it like GAIAs Qick Defense), GSE (grape seed extract), ginger (fresh and dried

avoid preparations with sugar), elderberry, licorice (not longer than a week). - Herbal teas to relieve your symptoms: linden, elderberry flowers (both induce sweating), sage, green or black tea, thyme, ginger, rose hips, mullein, lemon balm, peppermint in all combinations. -Steam inhalations three times a day with chamomile, thyme, eucalyptus or Vicks help congestion of sinus and lungs. Horsetail can be added to decrease swelling in your nose. - Chicken soup and hot lemon are still beneficial. - Take fish oil (several capsules a day contraindicated if you take anticoagulants like coumadin). This is the one thing most important in young people as it might be able to douse a raging cytokine storm. Alternatively, or in addition: the antiinflammatory medication Zyflamend. - Ginkgo biloba will start repair damaged cells - Ginseng will help flu symptoms but do not take it if you tend to have high blood pressure or a racing heart. - At least twice a day, have somebody wash you down with cold water (non-dripping face cloth), especially chest and back area to make you take in really deep breaths (prevention of pneumonia) - Against cough: Gan Mao Dan Chinese pills (20 per day in divided doses), or make a tea of peppermint, honeysuckle, ginger, cloves and horehound. - Other herbs that have been found beneficial in colds and flu: bayberry, boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum), calendula, goldenseal, Oregon grape. During these challenging times of climate change , world recession and swine flu ,we need to stay calm , gather information ,reason and think things through ,rather than react in a panic and do the worst possible thing . A search of the internet shows that there is a groundswell of opinion that there is a conspiracy to force swine flu vaccinations upon the global population. Many claim that there is a lot of proof that the virus was created in a laboratory to generate mass panic and thereby force everyone to have the vaccines. I have spent days referencing all this info.It is both crazy and interesting . This is no natural flu virus. It contains genes from human flu, birds and pigs from several continents, that could not have occurred in nature. Nevertheless, what are we going to do about it ? I feel that it is sensible for us to boost immunity naturally so that we dont go down with it and if you do, use natural methods to combat the H1N1 virus. After all its only flu. We have all had flu before, so why fly into a panic? Meanwhile do something about your health. If you take nothing else away from this article, let it be this: you have at your disposal many tools to bolster your immune system and drastically reduce your risk of colds and flu. You do not need a vaccine to do this . In fact , a vaccine could easily wreck your health. It is easy enough to detox your system and build up your nutritional status with herbs and supplements and to adopt a healthy lifestyle that is in your favour, no matter what happens. A new flu is just a new flu. Try to avoid it. If that does not work, simply fight it with natural healing methods. When H1N1 booms during the winter in the northern hemisphere, thats when panic may ensue. The majority of people can claim I didnt know much about this. That makes them vulnerable to being told to go and get vaccinated. In ignorance they will comply. And remember that the majority of those who have gone down with H1N1 virus have had normal flu. Some people will develop pneumonia, as happens with any flu and some of those will die as happens every flu season. Jane Burgermeister Austrian journalist Jane Burgermeister has filed criminal charges against the WHO, UN, Obama, drug companies and others because of a plot she uncovered to develop swine flu in laboratories and to release it causing mass murder via vaccination. She says that there is clear evidence that pharmaceutical companies are actively engaged in producing, developing, manufacturing and distributing biological agents classified as the most deadly bioweapons on earth. She says that the

virus was created and released with the help of the WHO, the very body which then claimed that H1N1 was spreading so fast that a pandemic had to be declared. Meanwhile we are told that drug companies and the WHO are working flat out to develop a vaccine for this new H1N1 virus, but in fact Baxter International filed a patent for the H1N1 vaccine on 28 August 2008 . The patent was published in March 2009, a month before the virus was released (or just materialized) in Mexico in April 2009. So it looks the game plan leading up to this epidemic was set in motion well before the current US administration came into office. Drug co spokesmen report that H1N1 vaccine will be introduced into the general population while regulators carry out simultaneous clinical trials reports the London Times . Thats a bit of a joke ! The manufactures know what it is and its effect. The drug companies have been given immunity from prosecution due to death or injury from the vaccine in a document signed by Obamas Sec of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius. Thats cool. The cheek these people have. Baxter International said it would be shipping the H1N1 vaccine worldwide by the end of July and the potential profits are fantastic. Wait a minute, it was filed 7 months before this new strain was officially known about. A blatent set up. People who have been vaccinated will not just all die,that would put people off the vaccine. There will probably be various immediate, short term and long term effects in people vaccinated . What we do know is that we are seeing a long prepared plan for mass vaccination by people who may not care less about the health of the population. It will target the immune system. People who already have compromised immune systems will be in big trouble. American reasearcher Patrick Jordon says he has uncovered information about a 3 vaccination system that has been developed. The first turns off white blood cells of your immune system, the second injects viruses and the third switches the immune system on . When the immune system kicks in again it unleashes such an assalt on the virus cocktail that it kills the body in whats known as a cytokine storm. Stay away from that one folks, it doesnt sound nice at all. Meanwhile the WHO has asked for live swine flu viruses to be in the vaccine . That makes it possible for all sorts of things to be in the vaccine from mercury to squaline . The list of chemicals in each vaccine is impressive. The damage each can do is horrific. Children and those most vulnerable will be the prime targets who dont need massive doses of immunosuppressant, untried and untested toxins in their bodies. Perhaps traveler will be targeted next, who can be jabbed at airports or refused boarding. Baxters have announced delays with their vaccine giving us time to inform and network with those who need to know about whats going on. So far in addition to America , Switzerland ,France ,Sweden and Greece are getting ready for vaccinating the whole population . Flu prevention: Supplementation:

Apathy, ignorance, fear even in the face of this information and good old denial are the chief impediments facing most people. Will you succmb to compulsory vaccination? Many people will line up with their children like little sheep . Children will be the initial battleground. Do you want your children injected with chemical cocktails and even microchips, yes microchips? Its a bridge that each of us will have to cross. Make up your own mind. Do not let the media wear you down as it usually does. On a metaphysical level we seem to be fulfilling the end time prophecies. Perhaps this is the final battle between polarized opposites (light and dark) leading up to the dimensional shift in 2012.

Herbalist Liz Sanders suggests an alternative way of preventing the onset of swine flu and easing flulike symptoms using back- garden and plant-based remedies THE present financial climate coupled with the ongoing threat of swine flu, means that many people will be feeling stretched to the limit. It was used in America for a strain of flu called break-bone fever, hence the name Boneset; Elderberry sambucus nigra The elderberry is an anti- inflammatory antioxidant, with diaphoretic properties and was used to treat a flu epidemic in Panama in 1995. People reported less severe symptoms, and a quicker recovery from the virus. Elder is the ideal choice for bacterial and viral infections as it contains anthocyanins, which enhance the immune function by boosting the production of cytokines; Elderflower sambucus nigra This is such a traditional flower, that it needs very little introduction. Im sure a lot of us remember our grandmothers or mothers collecting the flowers from hedgerows, to produce beautiful elderflower wine. This wine was duly brought out of storage at the onset of colds and flu. Elderflower is remarkable at reducing the early symptoms of influenza. In my experience, combining the berries with the flowers enhances the action of them both;

Myrrh commiphora molmol

This resin is thought to stimulate the production of white blood cells, which makes it a very good choice when an antimicrobial is required. Myrrh would also be classed as an anti-inflammatory expectorant, making it ideal for bronchial infections. I believe that myrrh supersedes the actions of echinacea in the treatment and prevention of viral illnesses; Scullcap scutelliria lateriflora This is a very fine nerve balancing tonic plant. Scullcap tones and soothes the entire nervous system, without any narcotic properties. Stress can be an enormous issue in many forms of physical illness if we have become weakened by prolonged worry our bodies are less able to combat viruses. Scullcap is the perfect plant of choice in this case; Peppermint mentha piperita Peppermint is traditionally combined with elderflower in the treatment of colds and flu. It is a wonderful, stimulating, aromatic plant and will also ease any nausea that you might experience because of its anaesthetic effect on the nerve endings of the stomach; Cayenne capsicum minimun I use capsicum as an accelerator to intensify the actions of the other plants. This hot medicine ensures a good blood supply to all parts of the body but it is also an efficient nerve tonic; Lobelia lobelia inflata Used in conjunction with capsicum to enhance the other herbs therapeutic actions. In small doses, Lobelia acts as an antispasmodic nervine, which has the ability to clear mucus from the respiratory tract.

As you may know, swine flu (H1N1) has barreled back into the Northern Hemisphere. Swine flu is scary because, unlike the seasonal flu, it can be deadly for young, healthy people. The natural occurring complex chemistry in many essential oils such as beta-caryophyllene, 1,8-cineole, eugenol, aldehydes and gamma terpinene, all show anti-viral activity.

Warning: Swine Flu Shot Linked to Killer Nerve Disease

A warning that the swine flu vaccine has been linked to a deadly nerve disease has been sent by the UK Government to senior neurologists in a confidential letter. The letter from the Health Protection Agency, the official body that oversees public health, was leaked to The Daily Mail, leading to demands to know why the information has not been given to the public before the vaccination of millions of people, including children, begins. It tells the neurologists that they must be alert for an increase in a brain disorder called Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), which could be triggered by the vaccine. GBS attacks the lining of the nerves, causing paralysis and inability to breathe, and can be fatal. The letter refers to the use of a similar swine flu vaccine in the United States in 1976 when:

More people died from the vaccination than from swine flu The vaccine may have increased the risk of contracting GBS by eight

times

The vaccine was withdrawn after just ten weeks when the link with GBS became clear

The U.S. Government was forced to pay out millions of dollars to those affected Concerns have already been raised that the new vaccine has not been sufficiently tested and that the effects, especially on children, are unknown.

As mentioned in this article, the 1976 swine flu vaccine campaign caused more harm than good, and there are indications that the current campaign may end up being a devastating repeat or worse. At that time, one person died from the actual swine flu, while 25 people died from adverse reactions to the vaccine, and several hundred people developed crippling Guillain-Barr Syndrome. According to The Daily Mail, the British Health Protection Agency sent letters to 600 neurologists on July 29th, warning them to be on the lookout for cases of GuillainBarr Syndrome once the swine flu vaccine campaign begins. Why the warning was not sent out to general practitioners, who will be administering the shot, seems an odd choice if public safety is indeed the main concern. This confidential correspondence between the British public health agency and neurologists in the U.K. is the first clue that all is probably not well with this fasttracked pandemic vaccine. Are You Willing to Let Them Experiment on Your Child? According to a recent report from CNN, the U.S. is set to receive as many as 600 million doses of swine flu vaccine, enough for 300 million Americans. Based on the recommendations from the World Health Organizations (WHO) advisory group on immunization matters, the top priority groups that stand to receive the vaccine first include:

Pregnant women Children over the age of 6 months with chronic health conditions Adults with chronic health conditions such as chronic respiratory disease, asthma, or obesity Health care workers However, pregnant women, children, and those whose immune systems are already compromised are also at even greater risk to suffer severe side effects from the vaccine, as the adjuvants in the vaccine are designed to reduce your immune function. Barbara Loe Fisher of the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) recently warned about the campaign underway to turn schools into virtual vaccination clinics. In many U.S. states, school has already started, so the decision of whether or not to vaccinate your child may become an issue youll have to deal with in the coming weeks. Swine Flu Drug of Choice Causes Side Effects in Half of All Children In the U.K. the hysteria over swine flu led to flu drugs being offered online, without a doctors prescription. This is incomprehensible, considering their risk. Just a couple of weeks ago I reported on brand new study findings that the swine flu drug of choice, Tamiflu, caused one or more side effects in OVER HALF of all children who received it! Side effects included:

Nausea 29 percent Stomach pain or cramps 20 percent Neuropsychiatric side effects including inability to think clearly, nightmares, and strange behavior nearly 20 percent Sleep problems 12 percent The British Medical Associations lead expert on swine flu went on the record stating that Tamiflu is now being overused. Keep in mind that, although the swine flu has spread across the world it appears to have decreased in severity. The vast majority of cases are very mild, requiring only a few days in bed. In fact, the regular seasonal flu is still far worse, and more deadly, than the swine flu. How Vaccines Can Cause so Much Harm The intended effect of a vaccination is to help you build immunity to a potentially harmful organism. However, your bodys immune system is already designed to do this in response to organisms that invade your body naturally.

Most disease-causing organisms enter your body through the mucous membranes of your nose, mouth, pulmonary system or your digestive tract. These mucous membranes have their own immune system, called the IgA immune system, which fights off invading organisms at the point of entry, reducing or even eliminating the need for activation of your bodys immune system. A vaccination, however, delivers either live or attenuated (dead) viruses directly into your tissues and blood stream through injection, completely bypassing your bodys first line of defense. And when combined with an immune adjuvant, your bodys immune system kicks into high gear in response to the vaccination. If your immune system is too weak to deal with the assault, severe side effects can occur. Injecting organisms into your body to provoke immunity is contrary to nature, and vaccination carries enormous potential to do serious damage to your health. To emphasize this point further, when ingested, the vaccine adjuvant squalene is actually recognized by your immune system as an oil molecule native to your body. It has antioxidant properties and is found throughout your nervous system and brain. The difference between good and bad squalene is the route by which it enters your body. Injection is an abnormal route of entry which incites your immune system to attack all the squalene in your body, not just the vaccine adjuvant. As a result, your immune system will attempt to destroy the molecule wherever it finds it, including in places where it occurs naturally, and where it is vital to the health of your nervous system. In the Meantime Consider Vitamin D as it Prevents Seasonal Flu Just last week I reported on Canadas decision to investigate the role of vitamin D in protection against the swine flu. This is great, but there are already overwhelming evidence showing that your vitamin D levels play a significant role in your likelihood of getting the flu. Vitamin D has been a hot research topic these past few years, and has been shown to have remarkable impact on nearly every single disease studied. Here is a list of four studies published this year, showing an inverse association between respiratory tract infections and 25(OH)D levels. That is, the higher your vitamin D level, the lower your risk of contracting colds, flu, and other respiratory tract infections:

1. A 2007 study suggests higher vitamin D status enhances your immunity to microbial infections. They found that subjects with vitamin D deficiency had significantly more days of absence from work due to respiratory infection than did control subjects. 2. A 2009 study on vitamin D deficiency in newborns with acute lower respiratory infection (ALRI) confirmed a strong, positive correlation between newborns and mothers vitamin D levels. Over 87 percent of all newborns and over 67 percent of all mothers had vitamin D levels lower than 20 ng/ml, which is a severe deficiency state. Newborns with vitamin D deficiency appear to have an increased risk of developing ALRI, and since the childs vitamin D level strongly correlates with its mothers, the researchers recommend that all mothers optimize their vitamin D levels during pregnancy, especially in the winter months, to safeguard their babys health. 3. A 2009 analysis of the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey examined the association between vitamin D levels and recent upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) in nearly 19,000 subjects over the age of 12. Recent URTI was reported by: o 17 percent of participants with vitamin D levels of 30 ng/ml or higher o 20 percent of participants with vitamin D levels between 10-30 ng/ml. o 24 percent of participants with vitamin D levels below 10 ng/ml The positive correlation between lower vitamin D levels and increased risk of URTI was even stronger in individuals with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. 4. Another 2009 report in the journal Pediatric Research stated that infants and children appear more susceptible to viral rather than bacterial infections when deficient in vitamin D. And that, based on the available evidence showing a strong connection between vitamin D, infections, and immune function in children, vitamin D supplementation may be a valuable therapy in pediatric medicine. Granted, so far none of the research has focused on vitamin Ds impact on pandemic flu. If your body has never been exposed to the antigens there is chance that vitamin D might not be enough. However, theres no evidence suggesting that vitamin D supplementation would cause you any harm or make your illness any worse.

On the contrary, if you are coming down with flu-like symptoms and have not supplemented with vitamin D, Dr. Cannell, one of the worlds leading vitamin D experts, recommends taking 50,000 IUs a day for three days to treat the acute infection. Some researchers, including Dr. Cannell, believe the dose could even be as high as 1,000 units per pound of body weight for three days. Ultimately, your best bet is to maintain healthy levels of vitamin D around 60 ng/ml year-round. Please note that this is far higher than most doctors will refer to as normal. Rather it is the optimal level youll want to maintain for disease prevention.
