Andrewss & All Souls: It is now officially Spring and New Things are Happening!
7600 N Hereford Ave Portland, OR 97203 503-285-0631 www.AllSoulsPDX.org info@AllSoulsPDX.org

As many of you know, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church (founded in 1895 as a mission church) and All Souls (a one year old mission church) are now joined (as of February 2013) into one new mission parish of 'St. Andrew's and All Souls.' Our joining together is generating much new energy and new things are now happening in our ministry and mission. In short, a'trinity' of new things are taking place:Our church is being renewed. Our pantry is being revisioned. Our thrift store is being repurposed. My own background involves planting a new church in Seattle (now ten years old) called Church of the Apostles, starting a cafein Seattle and co-founding a non-profit arts corporation and arts center in Seattle. As part of church planting, I envisioned, launched and managed Church of the Apostles' first non-profit, storefront cafe called Living:Room. I then foundedthe 'Artwerks' non-profit and cofounded the Fremont Abbey Arts Center. We purchasedan old, closed church building and renovated it to serve both as a home for Church of the Apostles and a six-days-a week, full service, non-profit arts and community center serving the Fremont neighborhood and greater Seattle. I encourage you to use the Internet and read about these great communities Ive lead & curated in the recent past. I am now excited to engage similar parish church and neighborhood community building work with St. Andrew's and All Souls in north Portland.

Hereford House is born

Upon my arrival in February as the new Vicar, I emailed St. Andrew's Episcopal Food Pantry Director Kathleen Greene and asked her about her dreams for the future of the pantry. She shared the hope and dream for us to be able to 'help more people in need in more ways,' includingmore and longeropen hours and more volunteers to offer expanded services: dental van visits, health screenings, flu shots, crisis counseling, a new van to drive clients, a sink for washing, and coffee and snacks offered to waiting clients in a warm and inviting atmosphere. This new and exciting vision will move us beyond being a food pantry and clothes closet into an expanded social services organization serving north Portland. The name Hereford House reflects the new and expanded mission we are embracing. As we begin the process to expand our services to those in need in north Portland, we are establishing two paid staff positions of Director and Assistant to the Director. Kathleen Greene remains our Director. Justin Craig Morgan (from the All Souls community) is the interim Assistant to the Director. We are funding these positions at half time for a three month initial period. During this time, our service operations will be upgraded and prepared for expansion. In order to fund needed facilities upgrades and expanded services, we will simultaneously reach out to our current pantry donors, seek outnew donorsand apply for major new grant funding.

Rev. Karen Ward our new Vicar is an internationally recognized Community building & Church planting Specialist

Everyone can now help us realize the dream to 'help more people in need in more ways' by donating directly to Hereford House online from links on our new AllSoulsPDX.org website.

Cafe Project
The third leg of our 'trinity of renewal' is the repurposing of our thrift store into a new neighborhood community cafe. The cafe will generate more income and new volunteers for Hereford House AND cultivate renewed human community and relationships across difference in our neighborhood. The new cafe will be both a 'third place' and a 'social enterprise.' A third place is 'an open and accessible gathering place outside of both home and work where diverse neighbors can meet for conversation and community building.' A 'social enterprise' is 'a business operated for community profit,' generating funds and bringing together neighbors around community causes.

Join us in our new and renewing community and mission.

St. Andrew's and All Souls is the only Episcopal parish in north Portland, serving seven adjacent neighborhoods. Our new and renewing mission will allow us to better love and serve all of our neighbors in the name of Jesus Christ. All three of our 'expressions' - the church, Hereford House and the Cafe have a unified theological vision of sharing God's radical welcome, spirituality, food, justice and hospitality with everyone. All of us are needed to assist God in mission to north Portland and to invite others to join with us. Everyone can help by sharing with others the new things we are doing and by inviting friends and neighbors who are looking for a church home to visit us, especially those living in north Portland. I hope that many of you will be able to join with us for our Holy Week & Easter Services -Maundy Thursday 6:30PM, Good Friday 7PM and Easter Morning at 10:30AM. After Easter Sunday, we will return to contemplative Vespers on Wednesday nights at 6:30PM and two services on Sunday -- Traditional 9:30AM with piano & organ music and Emerging 11:15AM with contemporary music. God's grace and peace to all during this Holy Week, Rev. Karen M. Ward Vicar, St. Andrew's and All Souls Episcopal Church Portland, Oregon
