Trusted Solutions for Deep Water Drilling Reliable, low risk, proven
Deep Water DP Reference Sonardyne Wideband LUSBL systems provide highly repeatable, independent subsea position referencing for deep water, dynamically positioned drilling and production vessels Drill String Positioning Riser monitoring, drill string positioning and emergency BOP control are requirements that further extend the role for Sonardynes cost effective and proven acoustic solutions

Introduction For over 30 years Sonardyne have been pioneers in the use of subsea acoustics for navigation, positioning and communications. Today, these systems are installed on many of the worlds deep water drilling vessels, positioning them in over 3,000 metres while, simultaneously providing downhole data logging, emergency BOP control and riser angle monitoring. With the progress into still deeper waters and greater technical challenges, Sonardynes cost effective and trusted solutions will continue to meet your requirements today and offer innovative solutions for the future.

The primary role for an acoustic positioning system on a mobile deep water drilling unit is to provide reliable and accurate position reference data for the vessels dynamic positioning system. Requirements for dual redundancy, riser monitoring, multi-vessel operations and BOP control are demands that further extend the role of acoustic technology. Sonardyne is meeting these challenges with its Wideband signal technology, the first stepchange in performance since acoustic positioning was introduced. Wideband signals use phase modulated codes transmitted on one of many different carrier frequencies. This combination generates more than 400 truly independent operating channels. Using Digital Signal Processing (DSP), dramatically improved range performance is achieved even at the lower signal to noise ratios experienced in the acoustically noisey environment created by vessel thrusters.
Acoustic Systems for Deep Water Drilling Product Guide

Wideband acoustic signals are fundamentally more robust than traditional analogue signals and are, therefore, better suited to realtime monitoring applications such as the acoustic telemetry of BOP and riser monitoring data. Crucially, because the restricted bandwidth is used more efficiently, more individual operating channels are available enabling more users to work in the same locality without causing acoustic interference. For example, a rig can operate safely on DP whilst acoustic survey operations are conducted from other vessels in the field without the risks associated with acoustic pollution. Wideband telemetry also offers significant improvements in the efficiency of deep water operations by greatly improving the update rate for the positioning of structures as they are deployed to the seabed.

Wideband LUSBL Dual independent multi-user capability

LUSBL LUSBL systems combine the high accuracy of LBL positioning with the convenience of USBL. The combined ranges are used to calculate the LBL position of the rig and, in addition, the ranges and directions to each transponder provides a USBL position from each beacon Multi Vessel Operations Sonardynes mutli vessel architecture avoids acoustic interference problems caused by vessels operating similar systems within close proximity to each other

Introduction Developments in deep water fields have led to an increasingly crowded operating environment, with multiple DP vessels required to work within acoustic interference range of each other. As DGPS suffers from scintillation or signal interference caused by sunspot activity, a demand has been created by operators for DP drilling units to adopt the use of two independent acoustic systems facilitating automatic weighting of acoustics against multiple DGPS references within the DP desk.

Sonardynes new dual independent Wideband LUSBL system not only mitigates the problems of interference between vessels but it also allows multiple systems performing different tasks to be operated on the same rig. The system achieves this through the availability of over 400 navigation channels, delivering true multioperation capability in crowded field environments. The technology is also capable of providing greater immunity to noise, a ten fold improvement in range measurement repeatability and fast position update rates when lowering structures onto the seabed. Wideband LUSBL can also be set-up as a conventional dual redundant system where two systems are cross-linked in a master and slave configuration. This allows positioning to continue in the event of a single point of equipment failure.

LUSBL Upgrade Users of existing Sonardyne LUSBL systems are now able to take advantage of the latest Wideband signal technology with an easy and cost-effective upgrade. As the Wideband LUSBL upgrade is installed on existing hardware, operators benefit from the new technology whilst the vessel remains in service. The use of familiar hardware and software on a proven topside platform eliminates the need for re-training and enables users to work with confidence from the outset. This low risk approach ensures operators can make a smooth transition to wideband whilst maintaining compatibility with their previous generation acoustic hardware. Sonardyne is also able to offer a range of options for upgrading other manufacturers acoustic systems to Wideband including transceiver installation kits and flanges.

Transponder Deployment Deployment of a Compatt 5 seabed transponder; Sonardynes most advanced Wideband transponder featuring high power transducers, long life battey pack and high speed telemetry

LUSBL Positioning The Long and Ultra-Short BaseLine (LUSBL) positioning technique is particularly suited to deep water applications as it combines the repeatability derived from Long BaseLine (LBL) subsea positioning, where accuracy is virtually independent of water depth, with the operational convenience of Ultra Short BaseLine (USBL) positioning.

The high level of range redundancy ensures that in poor acoustic conditions in which deep water DP vessels often operate, or when recovering transponders for maintenance, many range measurements can be corrupted before the computed vessel position degrades. Sonardynes LUSBL design circumvents the delays of calibrating the LBL arrays by using a Top Down calibration technique as the transponders are deployed. By not having to take baseline measurements, arrays can be calibrated quickly and reliably. An important advantage of this approach is the uninterrupted supply of acoustic information to the vessels DP system. This can be from arrival on station and the deployment of the first transponder, through the array calibration process and during the long term maintenance of the array.

System Performance Repeatability, the most important aspect when related to dynamically positioned rigs, is typically 0.5% of slant range although the absolute accuracy of the system is dependent upon the quality of attitude and heading sensors, transponder source level, vessel noise, water depth and mechanical rigidity of the transceiver deployment machine and proper calibration of the total system using Sonardynes CASIUS calibration software package. CASIUS is used to determine the inherent errors or offsets that are typically found within the vessels various attitude sensors. Compensating for these errors and offsets, together with the use of high resolution VRUs and gyros, can improve the repeatability to as little as 0.2% of slant range.

Wideband LUSBL System Overview

Navigation Processor The Navigation Processor is a 19 inch rack mounted unit that commands the system. It is interfaced to the vessels DP system, VRU, gyro, GPS and acoustic transceiver Dual Independent Conguration Sonardyne LUSBL can be congured as a dual independent or dual redundant system depending on the operational requirements of the vessel

System Overview A standard Wideband LUSBL system is comprised of four main components; a rack mounted Navigation Processor, control software, acoustic transceiver and a subsea transponder array. In a dual independent system, the vessel is equipped with two separate sets of topside hardware that can share the same seabed array. In a dual redundant system, the Navigation Processors and transceivers are cross-linked into both DP desks. Navigation Processor The Navigation Processor commands the transmission of acoustic signals from the through hull transceiver to the transponders, decodes the data received back and formulates the appropriate telegram to pass to the DP desk. The unit also processes signals from VRUs, Gyro Compass and DGPS. The operator interface consists of a rack mountable TFT colour monitor and keyboard. This facilitates
04

system initialisation, whereby job specific parameters can be changed and positioning tasks monitored. Alternatively, the LUSBL display can be integrated within a customers own DP console. LUSBL Software The Wideband LUSBL software is an embedded software application designed to manage the complex commands and communications between multiple transceivers and multiple transponders whilst providing users with the highest levels of operational flexibility. Features include diagnostic tools to optimise system performance, pole flap monitoring to analyse vibration from deployment systems, attitude sensor calibration, waypoint calculator and support for HPR 309, HPR 418 and 418BCD telegram types. Transceiver Sonardyne Wideband LUSBL transceivers are optimised to operate with Compatt 5 transponders and are backwardly
Acoustic Systems for Deep Water Drilling Product Guide

compatible with the tone channels of Compatt 4. The transceiver also functions as an LBL transceiver removing the need for additional vessel hardware. There are two transceivers to choose from depending on the vessel and the operational environment. Type 8021 or Standard Head is an all purpose transceiver best suited to general survey and DP operations where tracking could be straight up and down or at shallow angles, for example, towfish tracking. The Type 8023 or Big Head transceiver is the more common choice for LUSBL operations as it is specifically designed for ultradeep water and the high noise environments typically associated with mobile drilling units. The unit is optimised to receive signals arriving within a 50 cone. Any noise generated outside of this area, for example by thrusters, is rejected, therefore improving the signal to noise ratio and so the positioning accuracy.

LUSBL Transceivers Sonardyne offer a choice of either Standard or Big Head LUSBL transceivers depending the vessel, operating depth and acoustic noise environment

Compatt 5 Compatt 5 is Sonardynes most advanced LBL transponder with options for high power transducers and 7,000 metre depth ratings

Back Deck Testing Compatt 5 and DPTi transponders can be tested on the back deck with dedicated test units

Transponder Options Sonardyne LUSBL systems are compatible with the vast majority of medium frequency transponders currently in use worldwide. However, optimum performance is attained when using transponders that have been designed with Wideband technology. Compatt 5 Compatt 5 is Sonardynes most advanced LUSBL transponder featuring high speed telemetry, release mechanism and long life. Standard features include highly reliable acoustic release mechanism, depth ratings of 3,000, 5,000 and 7,000 metres, four different housing lengths (Mini, Midi, Standard and Max), dual axis inclinometers with DigiQuartz depth sensors, direct measurement sound velocity sensor and the capability to interface to and power external equipment for data telemetry to the surface.

Wideband Compatt 5 transponders have been validated in an extreme range of operational environments. This has confirmed that the faster and more rugged Wideband signals provide the highest accuracy and therefore the lowest risk for all subsea acoustic positioning tasks, regardless of water depth. Back Deck Test Units Compatt 5 and DPTi transponders (see Page 10) are supplied with PC utility software that allows users to set-up and program the transponders prior to deployment. In addition, a dedicated Deck Test Unit (DTU) or Pocket Test Terminal are also available. Supplied in a rugged portable case, the DTU is used initially to program the channel of the transponder, acoustically test the transponder in air and then load the acoustic release mechanism.

Pocket Test Terminal is a new truly portable test tool. Running on an iPAQ PDA platform, the Pocket Test Terminal software offers all the main features of the PC-based utility software but from a small, portable, splash proof device. It is therefore ideal for taking on to the back deck. Transponder Floatation Collars Sonardyne supply a range of subsurface oatation collars that are compatible with Compatt 5 transponders. Manufactured from high performance materials specific to the depth rating required, Sonardyne floats are designed for ease of handling on the back deck and come in bright colours to ensure high visibility both underwater and during recovery.

Transceiver Deployment Machine Ultimate Performance

Standard Machine A hydraulically operated pole with a sealed bearing and a sea chest service section Installation Sonardyne provides detailed advice on positioning, installing and setting to work deployment machines Transceiver deployed Transceivers are typically deployed three metres below the hull of a vessel with a Standard Machine

Introduction At best, the accuracy of an LUSBL positioning system can be seriously degraded by poor attention to detail in the mounting of the transceiver. At worst, it could pose a hazard to the integrity of the vessel and place people and valuable assets at risk. Key Features High strength carbon steel pole for stiffness and strength Inconel coating for durability and corrosion resistance High integrity bearing and sealing design Configurable design, can be Zone 1 Ex rated Reliable hydraulic actuation with safety interlocks

Sonardynes through-hull Standard Deployment Machine consists of a hydraulically operated pole, a sealed bearing section and a sea chest service section with inspection door. The whole machine sits on a gate valve which in turn is mounted on the hull penetration flange. Sonardyne have completed in excess of one hundred successful vessel installations worldwide, ranging from simple new builds to very complex installations into research vessels. All of these installations have been founded on sound engineering practice implemented by experienced engineers in collaboration with clients, naval architects and shipbuilders.

06

Acoustic Systems for Deep Water Drilling Product Guide

Mobile Drilling Unit Standard Machines are very rugged and are suited to retro fitting in large vessels such as drilling rigs

Sea Chest Transceiver sea chest with door removed to allow inspection

Local Control Panel The machine can be controlled from a bridge or local control panel

Hydraulic Power Pack Provides power to raise and lower the pole. Features include pressure regulation, motor and oil level indicator

The ideal deployed length is dependant on each particular application but in general terms it is best to minimise the deployed pole length to achieve the required acoustic performance. Typically, a length of between one and three metres below the hull has been found to be suitable. The pole is very rugged and is designed to be highly resistant to vibration caused by vortex shedding. Continuous operational speeds of up to ten knots through the water may be achieved safely (refer to separate brochure for full specifications) with the ability to survive short duration exposure to higher speeds.

Sonardyne can give detailed application advice on positioning, installing and commissioning the machine, backed up by worldwide field support from experienced commissioning engineers. The gate valve, when closed, provides easy access to the retracted transceiver for service and inspection purposes via the door fitted to the service section. The gate valve also allows the transceiver to be removed without dry docking. Available options for the gate valve include different materials, hydraulic or manual drive and a right angle drive adaptor. The machine can be controlled from the vessels bridge using a main control panel or from a local panel at the machine. The hydraulic power pack and local control can be mounted remotely if the machine is to be configured for Zone 1 Ex classification.

The standard form of machine can be simply customised to meet individual vessel requirements by changing the height of the machine and providing adaptor flanges for different size or specification valves. For specialist or demanding applications machines of this general type can be custom engineered to suit customer specific requirements.

Wideband Acoustic Data Logger High speed, robust communications

Proven Track Record Sonardyne data loggers have been designed to meet the challenges of complex offshore projects which are increasingly using subsea completions to provide a cost effective solution to operating in deep and marginal fields Deployment (Below and Right) The latest generation unit has been designed for easy deployment and recovery from the back deck and can be moved from well to well by ROV

Introduction Wellhead logging of down-hole data and cable-less telemetry are core Sonardyne technologies that offer guaranteed performance and reliability. The cost of deep water drilling and the complex geology of many of the worlds deep water fields has increased the demand for well testing during field appraisal. This is frequently carried out from remote observation wells with no cabled connection to retrieve downhole data. Sonardynes subsea data logger provides the solution by allowing the down-hole data to be stored at the wellhead and uploaded on demand, via its cable-free acoustic data link.

Key Features Designed for ROV deployment and retrieval Easily moved between wells Uses Sonardynes latest Wideband signal technology Interfaces to all industry standard gauges Depth rated to over 10,000 feet (3,000 metres) Fully adjustable data logging rate Long-life seabed deployment Sonardynes new generation of subsea acoustic data logger system uses a Wideband, high speed acoustic link to allow large volumes of logged data to be rapidly and accurately retrieved at the surface.

When combined with the feature of ROV portability, the system is the ideal solution for initial well appraisal, where frequent downhole pressure and temperature readings need to be logged over a period of a few weeks. The system is equally suitable for long-term deployments where it may remain installed on a wellhead, logging data for several years without intervention. The unit is capable of interfacing to downhole gauges from all of the major suppliers such as; Schlumberger, Well Dynamics, Roxar and Baker Hughes. Other manufacturers gauges can also be interfaced when required.

Wideband Acoustic Data Logger System Overview

Data Logger System (Left to Right) Surface Interface Unit with optional case, PC and display, data logger unit, surface transceiver and deck cables ROV Mateable (Below and Right) The data logger unit features a ROV mateable connector. Alternatively, the unit can be connected to a jumper cable prior to deployment

Data Logger Unit Constructed from super duplex steel, the data logger unit is rated to a depth of 3,000 metres and is suitable for either long or short term deployment. The connector on the side of the data logger may be ROV-mateable or may be connected to a jumper cable prior to deployment. Logging intervals can be varied by acoustic command from 1 minute to 7 days and is essentially governed by the battery power consumed by the gauges and interface circuitry each time a measurement is made. Using a standard battery, the life will be greater than 2 years if gauges are read only a few times per day but may reduce to a few weeks if gauges are read every few minutes.

Memory capacity is 8Mb which allows 500,000 data samples to be recorded. In general, the battery life is usually a greater constraint than memory size. Surface Transceiver The surface transceiver unit has similar characteristics to the subsea unit and contains a directional acoustic transducer and the transceiver electronics. It is designed for a high level of noise rejection from the rear and side, enabling it to receive acoustic signals very effectively in the presence of thruster noise. The transceiver is typically deployed from a small crane or some other over-the-side deployment scheme. It can also be permanently mounted on a vessel through a gate valve and deployment machine.

Surface Interface Unit and Control Computer The surface system is designed to operate with a standard laptop interfaced to the transceiver via a Surface Interface Unit that provides DC power and a serial communication interface to the transceiver. The PC software supplied is an application program running under the Microsoft Windows operating system. Automatic retrieval of data and setting of the logging configuration is initiated by virtual button presses and selections from simple dialogue boxes. Gauge coefficients are imported from disk and the data converted into engineering units before being stored on hard disk for export to a file in spreadsheet format.

Marine Riser Angle Monitoring System System Overview

MRAMS Display A typical MRAMS screen display. The software is simple to learn, set-up and operate DPTi Transponders (Below and Right) The MRAMS system operates with two DPTi transponders, one mounted on the BOP and one mounted on the riser. The units are fitted with high resolution inclinometers to measure pitch and roll

Introduction Sonardynes Marine Riser Angle Monitoring System (MRAMS) is a highly accurate, cable-free solution for measuring the differential angle of a marine riser, BOP assembly and vessels position relative to it.

Developed from field proven components, the system is based on the integration of Sonardynes USBL acoustic positioning technology and BOP-mounted transponders fitted with high resolution inclinometers. This provides clear and unambiguous data on the vessels position and riser angle status. The monitoring system comprises of four key elements; a Navigation Controller and Computer for controlling the transmission and decoding of acoustic signals, a vessel based transceiver which acts as an interrogator/receiver and responds to commands from the Navigation Controller, and a pair of DPTi transponders; one fitted to the riser and one fitted to the BOP. On command from the Navigation Controller one of three angles can be measured; the Riser, the BOP or Differential Riser/BOP angle. The angles are measured and transmitted to the surface using acoustic telemetry. The data is decoded by the transceiver and transmitted to the Navigation

Controller which uses the elapsed time from command transmission to reply and phase comparison to enable the vessels position relative to the BOP and riser to be determined. The system recommends a bearing for the rig to steer to in order to minimise riser inclination relative to the BOP. The MRAMS software is simple to learn, set-up and operate and allows users to achieve immediate success and get to work without delay or additional stress, which is often associated with new systems.

Wideband Emergency BOP Control System System Overview

BOP Command Unit The BOP Command Unit is a fully self-contained, high security acoustic command and control unit. It can be rack mounted at any convenient position on the drilling vessel or supplied in a rugged case for portable operation from a remote location Subsea Electronics Module The SEM is interfaced to the BOPs solenoids and read-back sensors. The unit is constructed from Super Duplex Stainless Steel and is depth rated to 4,000 metres Dunking Transducer (Bottom) The systems dunking transducer can either be deployed over the side of the vessel or permanently hull mounted

Introduction Sonardynes Emergency BOP Control System is a self contained, high security acoustic command and control backup system. In the event of loss of normal communications with a BOP stack, the system is used to execute emergency shutdown and riser disconnect procedures.

Features of the system which ensure reliability and security include Wideband signal technology, forward error correction techniques, directional subsea transducers and a portable surface controller with dunking transducer which enables remote operation from a lifeboat or stand-by support vessel. The system consists of a rack mounted or portable BOP Command Unit, intelligent Deep Acoustic Remote Transducers (DARTs) programmed to receive, decode and validate acoustic commands, and a Subsea Electronics Module (SEM) that provides the interface to solenoids and read-back sensors. The BOP Command Unit generates acoustic commands in response to operator intervention and transmits them via a simple over-theside or hull-mounted transducer to the DARTs.

The DARTs are usually located on folding arms which extend outwards when the BOP is lowered from the vessel. This ensures a free path of communications with the surface. Each system has a unique address and its 2 DARTs are programmed to respond only to commands which are specifically addressed to them. Once decoded and validated, the acoustic commands from the surface are forwarded to the SEM, which in-turn activates solenoid valves which operate the hydraulic rams and close the stack down. Up to 12 function outputs operate the solenoid valves which control the hydraulic operation of BOP Rams. A single command cycle can be selected which initiates a pre-defined sequence of valve operations, considerably speeding up BOP shut-in and disconnect operations in an emergency.
