We need to select a site quickly (April/May 2013) to ensure adequate space for both RV and Hotel guests. Announcements: Gary just completed a refresh of the OTC website. Gary would like everyone to take a look at the new site. If you find anything wrong, drop Gary an email. Pat advised us that during a recent dance marathon he and Carol competed in, Carol suffered injuries making it difficult for her to tango or get around effectively. Let's all wish Carol a speedy recovery as Dancing With the Stars auditions are rapidly approaching. Gary adjourned the meeting at 2:30PM.

Langlitz Leathers A Portland Icon

When: Saturday, April 27th, 2013 10AM Where: Museum Display Building, Brooks, OR Presenter: Dave Hansen & Judy Langlitz Hansen Ross Langlitz was an ardent motorcyclist who in 1947 decided to open his own leather garment shop that focused on high quality custom motorcycle gear. Ross was relatively successful in the early years, and in a couple decades the shop was running smoothly and ready for the Golden Age of Motorcycling of the 1970s. Ross retired in the mid-1980s, but left the shop in the hands of his daughter (Jackie) and son-in-law (Dave). For the past 3 decades they have endeavored to run Langlitz Leathers as Ross intended....not too big as to get out of hand, and not so small that it would have major problems sustaining itself. Ross' goal of producing The World's Finest Motorcycle Leathers has been reached, and his reputation has traveled around the world as the ultimate in motorcycle gear. Though this small company was founded in Portland, and remains located in the same place it has for over 4 decades, it is well known around the world. Many of their customers are in Asia, and Europe, as well as here in America....but its heart is here on 25th and Division Street. It is not a fancy facility, as one can immediately see once they enter the shop. Its primary focus is building top quality leathers and offering first class service to those who come great distances for its leathers. Interestingly, a customer can stand in one place and order a custom set of leathers. He can also be measured, see where his leathers will be cut and the area where they will be sewn....all without moving from that spot!

Furthermore, the shop found that good customer care is far better than advertising. In this day of modern conveniences, they do not even have a telephone menu....each phone call is answered by a real person capable of helping the customer. Now that the second generation is retiring, the third generation (Judy) is continuing the family tradition. In short, Langlitz Leathers represents the way business used to be done in America, and they continue doing likewise today. Please join us to hear Dave and Judy present the history of one of Portlands most iconic and famous institutions. Langlitz Leathers is a major part of Portlands motorcycle history and a world famous maker of high quality leather goods. More Information? Contact: Tom Ruttan

1913 Indian Twin

The 1913 Indian 61 Twin motorcycle was typical of the performance bargains available in the early 20th Century. Indian had offered its first V-twin in 1907, a 40-cubic-inch (633-cc) with atmospheric intake valves, which were common at the time. By 1913, the engine had grown to 61 cubic inches and boasted overhead intake and side exhaust valves. Though standard models had but a single speed, a two-speed transmission was available as an option. Indian built singles during this period as well, but the V-twin accounted for 90 percent of the company's production. It's not difficult to see why: In 1913, for example, a four-horsepower single cost $200, while a seven-horsepower twin went for $250. That was clearly more bang for the buck. New for 1913 was a "Cradle Spring Frame" that incorporated the world's first swing arm rear suspension system--though it was somewhat different in design than what is seen today. When the rear wheel encountered a bump, two vertical rods actuated a pair of leaf springs attached to the frame beneath the seat. This joined a conventional (at least for Indian) trailinglink front fork that worked in a similar fashion. For those suspicious of the new technology, a rigid frame remained available. Braking was accomplished with an internal shoe/external band rear brake, which incidentally conformed to Britain's "dual brake" requirement for motorcycles sold in that country--though it might not have been exactly what the Brits had in mind.
