Students will be able to S -look at different historical events and decide what shaped the policy making during this event -understand the relationship between economy, people, events and how they affect the governments decision making process, in regards to foreign relations.

Materials: -Article Explaining the History of American Foreign Relations Introduction Section -Worksheet on Article Introduction: -Opening Question and Discussion Who Shapes Foreign Policy?

-Students will brainstorm ideas and will write them on the board

Procedures: -Go through who actually shapes foreign policy: -Congress, President, Secretary of State/Defense/Treasury/Commerce, Chiefs of Staff, National Security Advisor, CIA, UN Ambassador, Public Opinion, Issue Groups, Business Groups

-Transition to the types of foreign policy -Separate Class into 5 groups: nationalist, progressive, realist, revisionist, and post-revisionist -Give the Article to each group for them to read and fill out worksheet on their assigned topic
Closure:

-Each Group will present the information they found and the class will fill in the worksheet as each group goes.

B.8.2 Employ cause-and-effect arguments to demonstrate how significant events have influenced the past and the present in United States and world history B.8.3 Describe the relationships between and among significant events, such as the causes and consequences of wars in United States and world history Understanding(s) U -During the Cold War foreign policy made a drastic shift to international policy -The shift in foreign policy during the Cold War created many international organizations Students will know K -Foreign Policy became very much an international issue during the Cold War -What the IMF, United Nations, World Bank are and their purpose -How Truman and the National Security Council changed this view of policy Essential Question(s) Q -How did foreign policy change during the Cold War? -What was the reason for this shift? Students will be able to S -Read and analyze a primary source document -Explain why international organizations were created and how they affect our government still today.

Stage 2 Assessment Evidence Students will present the documents (ideas) and international organizations through group presentations. Stage 3 Learning Plan L
Materials: -Computer for the group to research IMF, United Nations, World Bank -Primary Source document for groups reading the Marshall Plan, Truman Doctrine, and NSC-68 Introduction: -Watch video on the United Nations

-How has the United Nations affected us today? What other organizations do you know of control several different countries?
Procedures: -Explanation that these international organizations were created during the beginnings of the Cold War

-Separate Class into 6 groups: 3 based on documents and 3 based on international organization -Each group will need to make a power point slide explaining their document or organization
Closure:

-Each Group will present the information they found via the power point slide -We will add these documents to our Cold War timeline

YOUR DECISION ASSIGNMENT


Pretend you are one of President Obamas closest advisors. Taking what you have learned about foreign policy during the Cold War and the decisions Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, and Kennedy made during this period, pick a foreign issue/event that the US is involved in currently or has recently been involved in and write a letter/memo to President Obama discussing how you think he should go about dealing with this foreign issue/event. Which category of foreign policy does your decision fall into? Is it similar to a Cold War issue and how? Is your advice similar to that of one of the Cold War presidents and why? Feel free to create your own international organization to help solve the problem. Explain the history and relationship this country or area of the world has with the United States and how that is affecting your decision making.
GRADING RUBRIC
NEEDS IMPROVEMENT PERFORMANCE CRITERIA Chose a current foreign issue/event and gave background information on the topic. Proposed a solution to the issue and explained why you chose to go about it in the way that you did. Chose a category of foreign policy, explained the category, and gave explanation of why you chose it. Compared decision to a Cold War Presidents decision 10th grade level writing- few spelling errors, few grammar mistakes, correct paper structure EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS

UNIT GRADING PLAN - 5 points each day for participation in group work: 4 days of group work (20) - 5 points for worksheets/homework: 8 worksheets (40) - 10 points for foreign policy quiz (10) - 20 points for opinion paper (20) - 40 points for Your Decision paper (40) - TOTAL: 130 points
