Performance Tasks:

Your Decision- You are one of President Obamas closest advisors. Taking what you have learned about foreign policy during the Cold War and the decisions Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, and Kennedy made during this period, pick a foreign issue/event that the US is involved in currently or has recently been involved in and write a letter/memo to President Obama discussing how you think he should go about dealing with this foreign issue/event. Which category of foreign policy does OE your decision fall into? Is it similar to a Cold War issue and how? Is your advice similar to that of one of the Cold War presidents and why? Feel free to create your own international organization to help solve the problem. Explain the history and relationship this country or area of the world has with the United States and how that is affecting your decision making.

Procedures: -Go through who actually shapes foreign policy: -Congress, President, Secretary of State/Defense/Treasury/Commerce, Chiefs of Staff, National Security Advisor, CIA, UN Ambassador, Public Opinion, Issue Groups, Business Groups

-Transition to the types of foreign policy -Separate Class into 5 groups: nationalist, progressive, realist, revisionist, and post-revisionist -Give the Article to each group for them to read and fill out worksheet on their assigned topic
Closure:

-Each Group will present the information they found and the class will fill in the worksheet as each group goes.

Materials: -Computer for the group to research IMF, United Nations, World Bank -Primary Source document for groups reading the Marshall Plan, Truman Doctrine, and NSC-68 Introduction: -Watch video on the United Nations

-How has the United Nations affected us today? What other organizations do you know of control several different countries?
Procedures: -Explanation that these international organizations were created during the beginnings of the Cold War

-Separate Class into 6 groups: 3 based on documents and 3 based on international organization -Each group will need to make a power point slide explaining their document or organization

-Each Group will present the information they found via the power point slide -We will add these documents to our Cold War timeline
