MexicoisanimportantpartofZone7so,as Zone7Rep,IwasaskedifIwouldfacilitatethismeeting asomewhatdaunting,butexciting,prospect! TheStory ThefirstlatihanwasheldinCubaonAugust24th1958.CubawasthefirstLatinAmericancountrytoreceive thatgraceofGod.Bapakwasinvitedbysomewell-to-doCubans,butreceivednottocome,andsentacouple ofhelperswhoopenedmanytensofCubanmenandwomen.ButbythattimetheRebelArmywasbeginning theoffensiveinthecentralpartofthecountry. FourmonthslatertherevolutionarymovementledbyFidelCastrosucceeded,andtookoveronJanuary 1st1959.Apolitical,social,economicandmilitaryturmoilthenbeganinmycountryandpeoplewhowere opened,thoseofmiddleandhighclass,begantoleaveCuba. Subudalmostdisappeared,andthosewhokepttheflamealive,togetherwithafewnewmembers,went intohiding.Onlyoldestablishedreligionswereadmitted;nonewreligiousmovementwasallowed.Subud wasthereforeillegal. Afterfouryears,ninemonthsand14daysof presentingthisdossier,atlastonFebruary14th, thedayofLoveandFriendship,legalizationwas grantedinCubainthenameofSubudCuba,with thestatusofreligion. TheNationalGatheringwasatotalsuccess,andimmediatelyafterwardsIbegantoworkforthelegalization ofSubudinCuba. Ireceivedanothercall,thistimefromtheProvincialOfficerofthePartyinChargeofReligiousAffairs. HesaidhewouldmeetmetomorrowatthePartyOfficeinManzanillo.Inthatmeetinghetoldmetomeet notthemunicipaldelegationoftheMinistryofJustice,buttheheadoftheProvincialDept.ofAssociations. Ididthat,andmettheprovincialofficeronMarch5thinBayamo,theprovincialcapital.Hegavemeall kindsofsuggestionsandhelpastohowtofulfilltherequirementsoftheLaw. SomethingshethenindicatedtomeveryclearlywastorequestthelegalizationofSubudasareligion,becausetheprocessforthisrequestismucheasierthanforanassociationandbesidesSubudasanorganization didnthavetwothingsrequiredbytheLaw:ToberegisteredasanassociationwewouldneedAPHYSICAL HOME(abuilding),ownedbySubud(Impossible!)andpatrimony(wedidnthavethateither).Soinpractice therewasonlyoneway:torequestthelegalizationofSubudasareligion.AndthatwaswhatIdid. TheladythenaskedmetomeettheheadoftheDept.ofAssociationsoftheMinistryofJustice,something Idid,givingherthedossieronApril28th2008.Shereceivedit,becauseIcametoherasreferredbythat highlevelofficer,andregistereditsreceivinginanofficialbook. AfterthatSubudCubahelditslastNationalCongressonSeptember2009inManzanillo,inthesoutheastern partofCuba.WehadabigdiscussionintheadministrativegroupReligion/Association.Itseemstomethat GodwasntwillingtochangetheCubanlaw.Beinglegalizedasareligionisalowpriceforthelegalizationof SubudCuba.ThenewSubudCubanationalChair,brotherAsistookovertheproblem;alotofmemberswere againstthestatusofreligion,buttimeshowedthattherewasnootherwaythantoacceptthestatusofreligion. Thelawstatesveryclearlythattheauthoritieshavetwomonthstogiveananswer,butinsteadSubudhad towaitalmostfiveyearstoreceiveit,andthankstoGodAlmightyitisapositiveone. ThishappensinSubudeverynowandthen,thatsomebodywantstochangethelanguage.ButdoesSimonwantto changethewordlatihan?Well,wemostlydoalsousethewordexercise,butonlywithpeopleinSubudwhoknow thatwearereferringtothelatihan.Forthoughthewordlatihancouldequallybetranslatedasdrill,orexercise,ifwe werespeakingtopeopleoutsideSubudwhatwouldthesewordsmean?Formostpeoplethewordsdrillorexercise haveapreciselyoppositemeaningtothewayweusethewordlatihan.Forthesewordsimplyanactivitythatarises fromthewill. Nowthelatihanismorecorrectlycalledthelatihanke-jiwa-an.HereIhavedeliberatelyputthewordkejiwaanin hyphensinordertoemphasisethewaythatBapakhimselfpronouncedtheword,butalsotoemphasisethattheexercise istheexerciseofthejiwa,orbythejiwa.Nowweallknowthataswerelax,aswebegin,wearemovedfromwithin, wearemovedtowalk,ortodance,ortospeak,ortosing.Wearemovedbyourjiwa.Isthatthesamethingasthesoul? Iamnotsosure. Inanycasedoweknowwhatwemeanbythewordsoul?OutsideofSubudthewordisusedloosely,asifeveryone mustknowitsmeaning.Yettherearealargenumberofpeoplewhodoubtthattheyhaveasoul,andmoreoverdoubt thatanyoneelsehas.Sousingthewordsoultopeoplewhohavenotbeenopenedandwhohavenotbeenmovedby theirjiwas,couldgiveaverywrongimpression. InTheTestsofBapakthereisonetestthatisrepeatedoften.Thatis,Bapakwouldaskapersontowalkastheynormallywalkedandthenhewouldaskthemtostandandrelaxandthenwalkastheyweremovedbytheirjiwa.Then Bapakwouldaskwhethertheyexperiencedacleardifference.HowcanyouexplainthattosomeoneoutsideofSubud? Thetruthisthatyoucannot. Againthewordmeditationalsogivesentirelythewrongidea,asformostpeoplemeditationisthinkingstrongly andpurposefullyonagiventheme.Orinsomecasesrepeatingamantra.Ineverycasethiswordimpliestheuseofour will,notthelayingasideofit. SoIwouldaskthatwekeeptothewordsthatBapakused,andthecontextinwhichBapakusedthemwhichwas veryspecific. Thisbegsthequestion,HowdoweexplainSubudtopeopleoutsideSubud?WhatdoesBapakhimselfsayinhis openingtalkatCoombeSpringsonthe14thJune1957? Forthoseofyouwhoarenotyetopeneditisnottimeforyoutolistentothis,forwhatBapakisgoingtoexplainis moreorlessthedirectionandrequirementofthespiritualway. Inthoseearlydayswehadvirtuallynoexplanationatall,excepttotakeoffourshoes,tiesandwatches,tostandwith eyesclosed,relaxandwaitandallowwhathappened. Unfortunatelymostofwhatwesayonlyservestoputpeopleoff.Howeverwhenpeople,orSimonasanAmerican mightpreferthewordfolk,arefirstopenedandexperience,veryoftenthereisaninstantanddramaticchangeinthat personandthatresultsintheirfriendsbeingdrawntoSubudbywhatissometimescalledmagneticcentre.AsIcksan AhmedexplainedtomelongagothereisarighttimeforapersontoenterSubudand ifwetrytoforcethepaceweoftenonlysucceedinfoulingthingsup.Theymayget openedprematurelyandleaveprematurely.Itisabitofachickenandeggsituation. Anthony Bright-Paul writes in response to the January number of Subud Voice where Simon Klitzner wrote the following: The thing that is slowing down the Subud movement is the Indonesian and Islamic words that are used; words like nafsu, jiwa and Allah. The words need to be less Indo-Muslim as it scares many people away. It makes it sound like a crazy Islamic movement. I like the word relax as it is used in your wife's story. I like words like exercise, soul and God. Subud people say that the word meditation should not be used in Subud but I use it with non-Subud friends, saying it's kind of a meditation for oneself.

3.Thethreemonthwaitingperiodforapplicantscomesupagainandagainasholding Subudback.IljashasalreadypointedouthowimportantthisiswithrespecttotheaccusationofSubudbeingacult.Iwouldliketoaddmyownpersonaltakeonthisasahelper. Thisisntareceiving,norevenafeeling.ItsjustathinkingandIknowmanypeople willtotallydisagreewithmebutitremainsmypointofview. BapakhassaidinseveraltalksthatwhenGodgivesusagiftitsabitlikewhena parentgivesachildsayabike.Youwantyourchildtousethatbike.Youcertainlyfeel unhappyifyourchildrejectsthebikealtogether.SowhenGodgivesusagiftweneedtouseit. SoaccordingtothisthinkingofminethethreemonthswaitingperiodistherenotonlytoprotectSubudagainstaccusationsofbeingacult,butisalsotheretoprotecttheapplicantandthehelper.Soifthisperiodwasofficiallyscrapped Iwouldhavetoresignasahelpernotinprotest,butsimplybecauseIwouldnotdaregoagainstBapaksguidance andagainstmyownthinking,knowingthatIwouldbetoblameforanotherpersonsmistake.Irealizethatmanypeople willdisagreewiththispointofviewtotallyandthatsomemightwellfeelquiteangry,butImnotclaiminganyuniversal truthtothis,itisjustmyownpersonalpointofview.

ThatiswhyBapakdoesnotallowahelpertogivetalksinachurch.InfactSubudholdstotheprinciple:'We givetowhoeverneedsit,butnottoanyonewhodoesnotneedit.' Afterthemid60s,Subudslowlydeclinedtoabout75members.Until1963,therewasnowaitingperiodwhen newmemberswouldleaveafteramonthorevenless.ThelatihanattendancewouldincreaseagainafterBapaks tour,orafteravisitbyoneofBapaksAssistanthelperslikePrio. WhySubudpioneerswereinkindergarten SubudwasplantedinJavaandfoundbypioneeringspiritualseekerswhowerethirstyforanewspiritualway. Somewerebornthatwayandeagertoimprovetheirshortcomingsthatwouldrequirepurificationofbody andsoul;somethingtheyhadalreadytriedandknewitcouldnotbeaccomplishedbyanyhumanpower.Bapak hadremarkedthattheearlypioneerswerealreadyinkindergarten,becausetheyhadmostlyfinishedtheirspiritual preparation.Thismeanttheywereawareofthedifferencebetween'sensationandfeeling',andthereforehad earstoheartheurgentwarningsfromspiritualexperts,tonotbecomecandidatesforperishing! Thequestionis,cantodayshelpersinpreparationandothers,soonqualifyforkindergarten,orevenbetter asBapak'sassistants?Yes,soonerthantheythink!BecausetheSubudlatihancomeswithabonusattachment, whichareBapaksSpiritualExplanations asdownloadedbythepowerofGod.Becausewithoutthis'latihan bonus',anyoneinpreparationmayneedasimilartimeastheearlypioneerstoqualifyevenforkindergarten. Sotodayshelpersaremorelimitedtotestingeverything,asaslowerandhazardouswayofpreparation;hazardousbecausesomecircletestingbecamesopopularthatinsomeplacesitslowlydriftedintoinevitablefortunetelling.

Preparationisnecessaryeverywhere Everyoneneedstohaveapreparation,whethertoliveinthismaterialworldorinthespiritualhereafter,oreven inbothworldsatthesametime,asinthefollowing: Overfourdecades,IhadheardandreadmanytimesallofBapaksandalsoRahayusexplanationsthatare theso-calledSubudRoadmapofExplanations.BecauseSubudexplanationsarelikeacompasswithdirections forourinnerselfwhilewearestillinthisworld2.Ireadthemaroundtheclockandoftenwenttosleepreviewing them,buttheyweretoovastinscopetorememberindetail. Authorityisattherootofleadershipinamaterialworld.YetSubudisnotacommunityorculturewithleadership.Subudisamulti-culturalassociationofscatteredpeoplearoundtheworld,butwithnoparticularcollective mandatetoleadsociallyorspiritually.OnlytheSatanicmaterialforcecanleadusbackintothismaterialworld; whereasSubudisleadbyaconscienceinspireddirectlybyTheHighestLifeForce,anactivespiritualreality thatcannotbefoundinanytradition,bookormanualofinstructions. AreBapaksHelpersafraidofbecomingauthorities?Subudtestingissuchanicewayofnotbeinganauthority. Butmanyhelpersstillaskcomplexorwrongtestingquestionsthatendupasanafsumixoflongandconfusing answers.Thismeansthathelpersmaystillhavelessthana50%capacitytohelp,whereasarealhelperlikeRahayu,meaningBapaksassistantrequiresatleasta90%capacitytogivemoredifficultspiritualexplanations.

Subudisofferedtoanyone Helperdutiestodayaremoredifficultandrequiremorepatience,notonlywiththeirownpreparation,butalso withanunpreparednewmembershipingeneral.Iworkedwithpeoplewhohaveavastworldlyknowledgeand ability,evenspiritualknowledge,buttheyaremostlyordinarypeoplewhoarestill'notprepared meaning 'notdifferent.Howmanydifferentkindofsuchpeoplecantherebewithmoreinnercapacityandawareness? Dopresentdaytimesreflectthepastwhenitwassaidthatmanyarecalled,butfewarechosen?Nowadays, millionsofpeoplestillcannothearorseethemanypublicationsonSubudwebsitesaroundtheworld.Subud hasnothingtoshowofftoattractunpreparedpeoplebecauserampantmaterialforcespreventthemfromdevelopingthenecessaryspiritualawareness. Sincethe1950s,theunleashedmaterialmindhasmadelifesodifficultthatSubudisofferedtohelpanyone, readyornot,evenifthistakesalifetimeofpreparationormore.ItseemsthetimehascomeforAlmightyGod tochallengetheforcesofamaterialworldthatnowliketochampionhumanreasonagainsttheworldofSpirit. YetGodstillrequiresourpermission bysincerelysurrenderingourfreewillintheSubudlatihan,asfirstreceivedbyBapak. WhatcanSubudpeoplestillinpreparationdo,foranequallyunpreparedpublictotakenoticeofSubud? Therewerealwaysathousandlevelsofeverything.HeavenandHellwerealwayscombiningandintertwining andthefruitsofthelatihanseemedtoalwaysbetheretosaveusfromfallingintotheMagnetismofanyoneof theselevelstothedetrimentofembracingthepresent.GodisGood!Itwasagrandbeginningandagiftfrom heaven.Timehardlyseemstohavepassed,yethereitis,1999,andherewestillareOswaldandAsa,married 52yearsthisJune,have5grandchildren,stilldoingthelatihan...anddoingnothingspectacularinourlives.I hadexpectedatleastWINGSbythistimeortohaveexperiencedtheCosmospersonally!But,Iwasonedestinedtobeordinary...oflate,IrememberBapaksayingthat'swhatweSHOULDbe,andastheworldgetsmore andmorecrazywitheachpassingday,Ihavelearnedtotreasuremyordinary-nessasthe"pearlofgreatprice". Ibelievethatitisimportanttodolatihanforreasonsfarbeyondourselvesandbeyondourunderstanding.It's asifweformabridgeforthelatihanenergytopenetratethislevel,andthisisimportantfortheEarthitself andourdutytoAlmightyGodinresponsetotheconstantblessingswithwhichhefillsourlives.Whenallother reasonsfail,wekeepondoinglatihanbecauseitistheonlychoicewehave.
