Question 3. Answer briefly: (a) Why are villi present in the intestine and not in the stomach?

Answer: The major portion of absorption takes place in small intestines. In stomach simple sugars, water and alcohol are absorbed. Villi are specialized projections in small intestine with large absorbent area. This facilitates better absorption of compelx molecules as well. As food is fit to be absorbed only after complete digestion so villis turn come after all the digestive processes are complete.
(b) How does pepsinogen change into its active form?

Answer: The proenzyme pepsinogen, on exposure to hydrochloric acid gets converted into the active enzyme pepsin, the proteolytic enzyme of the stomach. Pepsin converts proteins into proteoses and peptones (peptides).

(c) What are the basic layers of the wall of alimentary canal?

(d) How does bile help in the digestion of fats?

Answer: The bile released into the duodenum contains bile pigments (bilirubin and bili-verdin), bile salts, cholesterol and phospholipids but no enzymes. Bile helps in emulsification of fats, i.e., breaking down of the fats into very small micelles. Bile also activates lipases. Lipase carry out the digestion of fats.

Answer: The pancreatic juice contains inactive enzymes trypsinogen, chymotrypsinogen, procarboxypeptidases, amylases, lipases and nucleases. Trypsinogen is activated by an enzyme, enterokinase, secreted by the intestinal mucosa into active trypsin, which in turn activates the other enzymes in the pancreatic juice.

Answer: Importance of HCl

HCl provides the acidic pH (pH 1.8) optimal for pepsins. Rennin is a proteolytic enzyme found in gastric juice of infants which helps in the digestion of milk proteins. Small amounts of lipases are also secreted by gastric glands. HCl is also necessary to kill harmful bacteria which may be present in the food.

This type of dentition is called diphyodont.
