Against the motion by Nakul Sehgal

Genes and family may determine the foundation of a house but the choices we make decide its form Good morning! Ladies and Gentlemen, the proposition has already stated the motion for today, which stands as this house believes that entrepreneurs are born, not made I stand here strongly opposing the motion. I have divided the debate into 4 logical constructives; First I will like to prove that each of us is an entrepreneur, then delve on the circumstances and choices and highlight the paramount role played by life experiences and education in deciding our life paths. In the end Ill be nullifying the motion by looking into the reasons for failed startups.

My first argument is that Each and every one of us is an entrepreneur. o Each person is capable of it or else he cannot survive in this competitive world. From the founder of a 1 billion dollar company to your local fruit seller, all of them run their business with skills, ideas and passion, A school project, an idea for a novel or taking steps to create a friends club all are examples of a spirit of risk taking, innovation and initiative-all key aspects of entrepreneurship. For every Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg, there are millions of us may who showcase our entrepreneurial talent but do not exactly run a business. Ladies and Gentlemen, my next argument is that Circumstances play a crucial role in deciding a mans fate Studies have shown that human behavior itself is 80% nurture and only 20% nature so its equally incorrect to assume that people are born to do a thing in life, be it entrepreneurship or anything else. o A research fellow at MIT frustrated at the pace of innovation ends up with his startup, speaking his mind, driving decisions, taking actions. Had he planned it? Invariably not. o Steve Jobs would not have given the world an iPod if he had not left Apple to join it again! Dhirubhai Ambani would not have started Reliance had he not gone on a life changing trip to Yemen, forsaking a Bachelors degree to earn for his family after his father fell ill. Next I would like to highlight the Role of parents, peer group and life experiences

Individual innovation can survive only in a conducive environment. Parents and teachers instill and inculcate the essential foundations of human behavior not the genes or family history.

Entrepreneurship may flourish in a country like India and China which are developing and have governance issues which make people think out of the box rather than the Scandinavian Countries where people have a comfortable existence. People are born into a society which considers a high paying job as the holy grail and therefore most of the latent entrepreneurs would continue to climb the corporate ladder without even sparing a thought on a new idea of their own.

My next argument is that Entrepreneurship can be easily taught o An entrepreneur needs to understand the market to make goods cater to it and that can come only with proper understanding and education. o Today all major B-schools have degrees in entrepreneurship; they would not be wasting money on such programmes if they felt that people could not be made into entrepreneurs. o To further underscore the argument Ill like to add that there is a significant difference between startups of high school students and graduates which implies that education plays a key role here.

My next arguments probes the factors that lead to failure in entrepreneurship o While some people believe that innate qualities of a person make them successful, studies that look into unsuccessful entrepreneurs have pointed out that the reason for failure was not a lack of passion but lack of proper guidance, networks and funding. To conclude Ill like to debunk the Silicon Valley stereotype of a brash, arrogant entrepreneur from an illustrious family who used to sell lemonades in school Nearly half the entrepreneurs dont start until 30 and very few do not complete formal education. Most are tired of working for a company and want to try something new with a desire to create something they can call their own. o Thus an entrepreneur is defined more by his cultural, social, educational background that makes him take choices that matter the most. Saying that one is born an entrepreneur overlooks this fundamental aspect. With this is rest my case.
