What's Church All About? by Rev. Clay Stauffer, Senior Minister

For too many years now, the church has been far too focused on getting "members" and not focused enough on making "disciples." Jesus said, "Go and make disciples of all nations" not "church members of all nations." Don't get me wrong, church membership is important and we practice our discipleship as part of a local congregation. But when it's all said and done, we are called to be "disciples of Jesus Christ." Recently, I came across an article by Anthony Robinson on the Alban Institute website that articulates this subject beautifully. It is titled "This Thing called Church: What Is It Really?" (http://www.alban.org/conversation.aspx?id=2098). Robinson makes a strong case: The point is not membership. The church does not have clients, members, or consumers of goods and services. The point is discipleship. The church exists to form and sustain individuals and a people who are followers of Jesus Christ, who are his disciples. Rather than buying into a consumer model of the church, where the customer is king and the church simply meets customers' needs, the church does more; the church redefines our true needs. The church transforms people according to the life and pattern revealed by God in Jesus Christ. It unites them with others who are committed to this way of life. To put this another way: what's the point of being a member of a church if you are not growing in your faith, growing in your spiritual life, and becoming more like Christ each and every day? One of the reasons I love the name of our denomination, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), is that it reminds us of exactly what we are called to be - disciples of Jesus Christ in the twenty-first century. We are called to take the teachings and commandments of Jesus seriously. It has always been true that people join churches for many different reasons. These reasons might include good preaching, vibrant youth or children's programs, good music, opportunities for outreach, pressure from a spouse, the birth of a child, societal expectations, to be seen on Sunday, you name it. And while each of these things might get somebody in the door and even on the roles, the goal moving forward should be the same: to become a committed disciple of Jesus Christ. Robinson talks about what can happen when a culture of membership rather than discipleship dominates: A culture of membership, partly shaped by the ethos of consumerism, turns the church into a provider of goods

and services dubbed religious or spiritual. Moreover, it is "our church" or "my church," not "God's church." A person, couple, or family may go to such a church to have a wedding or funeral, to participate in a small group for personal growth, or to receive inspiration for their work week. Nothing is wrong with any of this, except that it stops short of a full realization of the nature of the church as the people of God or the Body of Christ or the creation of the Spirit or all three. The church in such a model remains something we go to in order to take or receive from. It may meet our needs and thrive or disappoint them and lose our interest or engagement. But the church in this model has missed what may be our most fundamental human need, and that is to lose and to forget ourselves in commitment and relationship to that which is greater than self and self-interest. We have now entered Holy Week, the time when we remember the final days of Jesus' life and ministry. There is perhaps no better week of the year to remember that we are called to be "disciples" of Jesus. We will gather on Thursday night in Drowota Hall at 5:30 p.m. for a dinner and a Maundy Thursday service and then again on Friday in the sanctuary at 5:30 p.m. to hear the Seven Last Words of Christ. Don't miss these opportunities to grow closer to Christ in your own life. Remember, while church membership is important and does matter, what really matters is whether we are following the one who entered Jerusalem on a donkey, broke bread in the Upper Room, died on a cross, and who calls us to be his disciples by spreading his love to a hurting world. Blessings,

What Makes it Such a "Holy" Week? by Rev. Trey Flowers, Minister of Children & "The Bridge"
When we think about all of the terrible things that happened to Jesus during this sacred week so long ago betrayal, arrest, torture, mocking, and death, to name a few it can be difficult to understand what makes this week so holy. It's the same question that children often ask: "why is it called Good Friday if it was the day Jesus died?" The reason this is a Holy Week (and the reason it is a "Good" Friday) is that through the sacrifice of our Lord and Savior we become closer to the love of God than ever before. The challenge, though, is that it's really only as holy of a week as we make it. As Clay noted last Sunday, it is so tempting and so easy to skip from the exuberant joy of Palm Sunday to the brilliant hope of Easter. Palm Sunday has long been one of my favorite Sundays of the year from the smiles of the children as they wave their palm branches high into the air to the joyful strings and brass that grace our worship services who wouldn't love a Sunday dedicated to shouting "Hosanna" to our savior? Easter is perhaps the only day more hopeful and more exciting from the bright colors of new suits and dresses to the packed out pews of our high holy day who wouldn't love a Sunday dedicated to God's love overcoming death? What happens in between, however, lays a foundation that makes our journey with God most complete. Only when we understand the deep suffering that Christ went through for us can we understand how glorious his overcoming that suffering was. Only when we understand how agonizing his death was can we truly appreciate how magnificent his defeat over death was. These are painful pieces of the story, but they paint a picture of a Lord who loves us so much that He was willing to die for us. Set aside time each day this week to understand and appreciate the story that is unfolding. Woodmont offers so many opportunities during Holy Week to connect with God through worship and to connect with each other through fellowship. Hopefully you can join us for some of these opportunities, or if not you can commit to reading a part of the story from the Bible each day (conveniently broken down by day above, thanks to Roy Stauffer and his never-ending knowledge of the Bible). However you choose to connect with God over these 7 days, let us all make this a Holy Week together!

It was during her first Yoga class with Karen Renner, a knowledgeable and inspiring teacher, that she became hooked. Intrigued by the vast physical possibilities of this ancient art/science while simultaneously appreciating the inner spiritual awareness a yoga practice fosters, she pursued her teaching certification. In 2007 she gradated from The Yoga School in Nashville and began teaching public classes as well as private sessions. Katie believes that yoga is for everyone, and whether young or old, in shape or out, new or returning to yoga, there is a spot for your mat in her yoga class.
