(PFASI) Hosts Successful Pinoy Got Talent Competition to promote Filipino culture
~written and photographed by Dr. Joan May T. Cordova Highlighting Filipino art, dance, and singing, the Philippine Folk Arts Society, Inc. (PFASI) successfully sponsored its second Pinoy Got Talent competition at the Hilton Hotel in Philadelphia on March 23, 2013. In the program, PFASI President Dr. Aida N. Rivera underscored how PFASIs mission is to tap and cultivate the artistic talents of our children, while they learn and embrace their Filipino traditions.

(PFASI) organizers Dr. Aida Rivera, Marife Domingo, Vicky Aquino join event judges Tim David, Odra Hidalgo Anderson, Julia Zavadsky and youth contestants in the Pinta/Art category of PFASIs Pinoy Got Talent 2013 Pinta, Sayaw, Awit / Art, Dance, and Singing Competition.

Before his lunchtime invocation, Rev. Peter Yanes said, Its up to us to pass the torch, to teach our Filipino American second generations about the Philippines.

Emcee Grace Rustia introduced artist Vicky Aquino, coordinator of the Pinta/Art segment of the competition, who announced: Seven youth will be part of an on the spot drawing contest and may use a variety of art materials to express todays theme Its more fun in the Philippines. This years PFASIs Pinta/Art competition would also honor the renowned Philippine artist, the late Leonardo Hidalgo. PFASIs afternoon program included special selections by the PFASI Rondalla/String Ensemble who accompanied dancers Sandy Bejo, Florentino Ouano, Luisa Arocena and Lito Gelviro as they performed La Jota Moncadea. DJ Jerome Ancheta provided music and often led line dancing for everyone. After lunch, guests enjoyed presentations and performances by youth and adults who competed for winning titles in PFASIs Pinoy Got Talent 2013 pinta, sayaw, awit art, dance, and singing competition.

PFASI expressed much appreciation for the three accomplished artists who served as judges for all segments of the competition. Dr. Julia Zavadsky holds a Ph.D. in music and is a conductor and Temple faculty member who has been a part of international choir concerts. Odra Hidalgo Anderson, formerly of Ballet Philippines and the Pennsylvania Ballet had performed with Boshoi Russian Ballet and is also a visual artist. Gold medal figure skater Tim M. David is founding director of One Step Closer, a figure skating exhibition to benefit The AIDS Resource Foundation for Children. Key organizer Marife Domingo described how, for the first time, everyone would have the opportunity to vote for Peoples Choice Awards to be announced after judges decisions.

After lively Sing Off and Dance Off performances, all judges noted that competition was close in all categories. At PFASI, everyone is a winner, emphasized Dr. Aida Rivera as she presented PFASI Pinoy Got Talent 2013 Certificates of Participation to all contestants.

Three generations of Filipino American artists include PFASIs Pinoy Got Talent 2013 Pinta winner Paige Ouano Murray with brother David Ouano Murray, mom Vivian Ouano Murray and grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Florentino Ouano.

Judges announced that Paige Ouano Murray, the youngest contestant at age 5, won PFASIs Pinoy Got Talent 2013 Pinta/Art competition with her drawing of the Philippine flag surrounded by scenery of the Philippines. Her brother David told the audience, Now I want to go to the Philippines. It would be fun. Both Paige and her brother David Ouano Murray are third generation Filipino Americans.

PFASIs Pinoy Got Talent 2013 Awit Winner Christian Yanes with his parents Rev. Peter and Irene Yanes and sister Shekainah Yanes.

Christian Yanes, who sang and played his guitar to You and I (by Filipino American composer JR Aquino), won the Awit/Singing competition based on the judges scores for voice quality, mastery and timing, stage presence or star power, and audience impact. Outside of competition, he also gave a well-received special saxophone performance during a break in the program.

Double winners: Ranked first place by the judges as well as by the audiences popular vote, Pure EnerJ Line Dancing Team of PCSNJ won both PFASIs Pinoy Got Talent 2013 for Sayaw Award as well as the Peoples Choice Award.

Six members of the line dancing team Pure EnerJ of the Philippine Community of Southern New Jersey (PCSNJ) Purie Ancheta, Nilda Antiquea, Luisa Arocena, Sandy Bejo, Sandy Bobila, Lyn Mangulabnan won the PFASIs Pinoy Got Talent 2013 Sayaw competition. Judges gave Pure EnerJ high marks on original choreography, synchronization, costume, and audience impact. Pure EnerJ also won the Peoples Choice Award for Sayaw.

By popular vote, Elaine Ficarra won the Peoples Choice Award for Awit and Lourdes Asidao won the Peoples Choice Award for Pinta.

In her closing remarks, Evelyn Tuanquin thanked everyone involved and affirmed PFASIs goals to promote Filipino culture. Congratulations and many thanks again to all performers, artists, judges, organizers, donors, and all PFASI supporters!
