MCCP in the past 20 years nding new routes for the old roots

omeland and the memories attached to it are the ones that dont let you forget your roots despite good life & comforts in the foreign land. Mangaloreans around the world have witnessed such problems and hence, have established their own community centres everywhere to bring the community under one roof to overcome/address such woes. MCCP is one such platform celebrating its 20 years of service to the community in Muscat with its motto united to serve the community and nding new routes for the old roots in keeping with current years move together for a stronger community. These 20 years have been a bundle of mixed feelings and rich experience. To quote Charles Dickens It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us.. Translating vision into reality What was started as a small setup in 1992 with few like minded people coming together to nurture the ever growing social, cultural and spiritual needs of

Mangalorean community belongs to Ruwi & Ghala Parishes, today it enjoys international recognition. The early pillars of MCCP namely Walter Monteiro,

Robert Cutinho, MickMax and Gerry DMello, set the platform and (late) Fr. Augustine Antao, blessed the idea and permitted to carry out its objectives namely social, spiritual and cultural activities. True to communitys beliefs it extends nancial support to the needy and under privileged brethren through its outreach approach. Besides it supports projects related to Churches, Educational Institutions and other social development programmes back home. Its involvement in Parish activities including food festivals, Christmas Carol Singing in Konkani, Annual Konkani Retreat, besides

organising Monthi Fest with best traditions of our homeland is very much appreciated by all. Sports activities such as Cricket tournament, Volleyball tournament, Throw Ball tournament for women and fun in the sun outdoor family participation are some important events in MCCPs annual calendar in sports arena. Early struggles Like any organization, MCCP too had its share of problems and challenges in its early days. Good times bring happiness and bad times bring experience. In the early days of its struggle our leaders have played key role in nurturing the growth and they led MCCP through troubled waters towards the safe harbour. They were trying times confesses Brian Nazareth (President 19951996) and in his own words ego clashes, and personal agendas led to a community in turmoil and confusion all around. If History has to be placed in its right perspective, it was at this trying times that stalwarts like Oswald Soares and Walter Monteiro took over the helm of affairs and under the guidance of the (late) Fr. Augustine Antao,

At one point Fr. Antao, referring to MCCP said You are my hands and feet and that was indeed a huge compliment from the man who pioneered the concept of community building. After early years of its struggle, every year has been a milestone, achieving higher standards of performance. According to Gerry DMello (now in Canada) Today, its truly a great honour to the entire Konkani Diaspora residing in Oman that MCCP is being rated as one of the best 25 Konkani Associations in the world and was honoured by the previous Hon. President of India - Smt. Pratibha Patil, during Konkani World Cultural Convention held at Mangalore in 2010. We are sure all will share Gerrys sentiment and take pride in being a part of MCCPs journey.
