Reservation Statement The instructor reserves the right to make adjustments at any time to this syllabus as needed. Methodologies The main determinants of the final grade are the Topic Response Forum, the weekly Cengage problems, and the Final Exam which is also the final assessment. Although points are assigned to all assignments, these three assessments will be given the most scrutiny by the instructor. Expectations in the Forum include the following: Graduate level writing Original writing or citations for all non-original work APA format for all references and citations

First week Get to Know Blackboard/Syllabus Quiz In Week 1, students can earn up to 10 points by completing a short quiz containing 10 questions that can be answered by reading the Syllabus Part 2 or becoming familiar with the courses Blackboard. The quiz is located in Blackboard Weekly/Materials Week 1. Topic Response Forum One comprehensive forum topic response is assigned each week. Students are required to select and research one of the topics listed in the weeks forum using a minimum of 3 reference sources in addition to the textbook and then create a 1,000-word or more response to the topic. Write and edit the response in Microsoft Word using the Spelling and Grammar Tool, and then copy and paste it into a reply to the topic thread in the weeks Topic Response Forum no later than Day 2 of the week that the response is due. In addition, students are required to submit the response to Turnitin through the Weekly Materials/Week n/Assignment Submission folder by the end of that week. No grade will be given to the student until the Topic Response has been submitted to Turnitin. Comprehensive forum topic response contributions will be critically graded on the thought quality of the response, work effort, research, APA format, and analysis. Note that websites of the wiki variety are not considered scholarly resources and should not be used as references.

The rubric for grading the Forum Topic Response is in the Syllabus section of Blackboard. Topic responses should be thoughtful and representative of graduate intellectual ability. The purpose of this assignment is to reinforce the chapter learning materials in alignment with the course learning outcomes and to bring a deeper understanding of content through research, analysis, and examples on broader topics that go beyond the text. Forum Peer Responses Students are expected to actively respond to other students Forum Topic Responses each week. A minimum of 3 substantial (150-250 words) interactive contributions including at least one supporting reference outside the textbook is required to earn the full number of points. Students are expected to provide additional insights, explore differing opinions, and present soundly-supported, well-reasoned comments that build upon the ideas presented by others in the class. Read the actual sources cited by students and present additional insights from those sources. Shorter responses that ask for clarification, compliment the author of another post, or answer a question may be posted, but they will not count as a substantial contribution. Refer to the Forum Peer Responses Grading Rubric in the Syllabus section of Blackboard. Weekly Reflections Forum In the Weekly Reflections Forum, in 200 words or more, students will comment on the topic coverage that was of most interest to them that week. State how the knowledge could be applied at the students current or prior position and how the student and/or employer could benefit. Students are strongly encouraged to post replies to other students reflections. By interacting with others in the class, a better learning environment can be achieved. This assignment is due by the end of Day 1 of the following week. Final Exam In order to receive a passing grade in this course, a grade of at least 73% must be earned on the Final Exam in addition to an overall average of 73% in the course. Because it also determines 25% of the final grade, preparation for the comprehensive Final Exam should be a process that continues throughout the first six weeks of the course. Keep in mind the following: The FINC 510 Final Exam consists of two parts: 1) 14 multiple choice worth 5 points each and 2) 18 fill-in-the-blank problems worth 10 points each. It is located at http://login.cengage.com/sso/ (refer to the CengageNow section below). The textbook, PowerPoint files, Spreadsheet Problems, Excel Chapter Models, homework problems, and notes may be used during the exam. Questions and problems apply to all eight chapters of the textbook covered in this course. The time limit for the first part of the exam is one hour; three hours are allowed for the second part.

Unlike the CengageNow homework assignments, each part of the exam may be taken only one time in one session, and no e-book hints will be provided for questions and problems. Partial credit is given for each component of a multi-answer problem answered correctly. An exam reset may be granted by the instructor only in cases where a problem with Cengage can be proven. Questions with calculations require knowledge of concepts like the following: o Rates of return for stocks o Earnings before taxes o Income Statement o Balance Sheet o Ratio analysis o Tax calculation o Profit margins o Return on equity o Present and Future values o Annuities o EPS growth rate o Rates of return for bonds o Nominal interest rates o Rate of inflation o Current selling price of a bond or stock o Constant and non-constant growth stock valuation o Preferred stock rate of return and valuation o Yield to maturity, Current yield, and Yield to call o Expected and required rates of return o Portfolio beta o Other textbook material The best way to prepare for this exam is to carefully work out each of the CengageNow problems and Spreadsheet Problems assigned each week until the concepts are mastered. Many problems can be solved with only a calculator. However, it is better to create an Excel model for each weekly problem so that there will be something to start from during the second part of the exam.

Students who do not develop some level of competency with Microsoft Excel and financial problem solving before the 7th week may find the problems on the Final Exam taking more time than is allowed. Weekly CengageNow Questions and Problems Homework questions and problems are assigned during each week of the course to reinforce the concepts explained in the textbook reading assignments and also to prepare students for the Final Exam. The textbook has a homework management system called CengageNow that creates questions and problems for each chapter.

Students will be able to re-take the assignments an unlimited number of times. CengageNow will merge the correctly answered questions from each take until all of the questions or problems have been answered correctly or 20 attempts have been made. The goal should be a 100% score each week worth 20 points. Students will have to purchase the e-book/CengageNow package or a CengageNow access code if a hardcover book has been purchased. The procedure for creating a CengageNow account and registering for the course can be found in a folder in the Syllabus section of Blackboard. For assistance with registering, creating an account, and using CengageNow, Cengage has a help site with videos: http://www.cengage.com/tlconnect/client/product/fcis.do?productId=5. Once in the CengageNow classroom after registration has been successful, find 4 tabs near the top of the page: Courses o This shows you the correct course you are in, along with your name, the grade in CengageNow (not the course grade), and assignments. Grades o This shows you the assignments for the course, the grade received in the assignments that you have taken, and other useful information. o The course instructor will transfer the assignment grade earned in CengageNow to the Blackboard Grade Center after Day 7 each week. Assignments/Tests o Shows all of the course assignments and their current status. o After clicking Take on the assignment for the week, the assignment screen will appear along with the rules for the assignment. o The assignment session can be saved in order to work on it later. Study Tools o This has study tools to help with the course.

The student will have three opportunities to find out if an answer is correct by clicking the Check My Work button. After submitting the session for grading, the student will get an additional three opportunities to check each incorrect answer on the next take. Spreadsheet Problems Beginning with Week 2, one Spreadsheet Problem from each chapter will be assigned. Follow these instructions for this assignment: 1. Read the description of the assigned Spreadsheet Problem at the end of the textbook chapter for the week. 2. Go to Weekly Materials/Week x/Week x Preparation: Reading & Resources in Blackboard and open the Build a Model Excel spreadsheet for that problem and save it to your computer with your own name included in the file name. This spreadsheet contains an Excel model that has been customized for this specific problem and contains instructions, a data section, partially filled in formulas, hints, and notes. Versions of these

spreadsheets that were not downloaded from Weekly Materials will not be accepted for grading. Solve the problems or answer the questions by inserting your answers in each of the highlighted worksheet cells. Your answer must consist entirely of Excel formulas or equations, cell references, or Excel functions. No purely numeric answers will be accepted for credit. Save your Build a Model spreadsheet when it has been completed. In Week 2 only, repeat steps 1 through 4 above for the second chapters problem. Submit your Build a Model spreadsheets for grading by attaching them to the corresponding assignment in the Assignment Submission Folder in Weekly Materials for the week that the spreadsheet is due.

Microsoft Excel Training Students will find that a moderate level of competency in the usage of Microsoft Excel will help them not only with this courses Final Exam but also in the core and concentrated MBA classes and in their employment positions after graduation. Therefore, an assignment is listed in the first week to complete the tutorials in Excel in the Weekly Materials/Week 1/Week One Preparation: Readings & Resources folder. Students are not expected to become Excel Masters, but they should be able to construct formulas in cells, reference data in other cells, use common financial functions, and create simple charts. Although no points are given for completion of these tutorials, students without prior experience with Excel are strongly encouraged to begin the tutorials as soon as possible in the first week. Excel Tool Kits for each chapter except the first are included in Weekly Materials/Week x/Week x Preparation: Reading & Resources in Blackboard and supplement the textbook with many examples of problem-solving with Excel. This is especially important during weeks 4 and 5 and for preparing for the Final Exam. The instructor will be available to answer basic questions about Excel. Course Grade Determination There are 1,000 possible points. The breakdown of the seven grading components is shown below. Grades will be posted weekly in the Blackboard Grade Center. The lowest passing grade in this course is C. There is a minimum score of "C" required for the final assessment in order to pass this course successfully. Textbook and Technology Policy It is the responsibility of students to be prepared for class which means that they should have all required course materials including the CengageNow Access Code and e-book or textbook at the start of class as well as reliable access to required technology tools and the internet for the duration of the course. In extreme situations, where there is a delay in the shipping or procurement of materials, faculty will make reasonable accommodations during the first week of class only. All students must have Access Codes and e-books by Week 1 Day 7. No exceptions and no accommodations will be made by faculty after this date. The only exception to this policy is when there is a problem obtaining the Access Code/e-book package from the University supplier.

Due to copyright laws, sections of the text, other than materials authorized by the publisher such as PowerPoint files, problem solutions, etc, cannot be scanned and posted to the classroom or emailed by either the faculty or students. Similarly, DU does not accept individual technology issues or internet access as a reason for late work in online classes. Be sure to have a back-up plan in case of unexpected glitches, viruses or inaccessibility, especially during the Final Exam. Libraries, college campuses, restaurants, friends, and family are frequently used alternatives. Additionally, work must be submitted on time and as directed in the course instructions using Microsoft Office software version 2000 or higher. Work submitted in other formats such as Word Perfect or Open Office will not be accepted. MBA Policy Assignment Extensions It is the responsibility of students to complete all course assignments on time in accordance with the course calendar and late assignment policies outlined in a facultys syllabus. In extreme situations where there is a scheduled professional or educational conflict that inhibits the students ability to complete an assignment by the deadline, only written contact with the faculty one (1) week prior to the assignment deadline will be considered appropriate for deadline extension. Faculty must confirm in writing their receipt of the request for extension. No extension can be granted for Discussion Board participation or for the final assignment/exam. Late Policy Assignments submitted after midnight the last day of the course week (Day 7) for the current week will incur the penalties listed below unless a request is approved prior to the due date. Please do not ask for extensions unless an emergency exists, remembering that emergencies are an exception. Assignments submitted after the due date will not receive full credit. No credit will be given for an assignment turned in more than three days late. No credit will be given for Forum Peer Responses posted after the due date. The brevity and accelerated nature of our online learning environment does not allow for extra credit assignments. Please do not ask for what cannot be granted. In addition, grades will be determined solely on the number of points earned by the student; under no circumstances will an instructor grade an exam, an assignment, or the course itself on the curve. If you are having an issue turning an assignment in on time, please communicate with the instructor as soon as possible so that an appropriate solution can be found.

Late points will be deducted as follows: One day: minus 10% Two days: minus 15% Three days: minus 25% Four Days: No credit Be on time, allow extra time for problems, but accept the penalty if you miss it---this is the real world! Plagiarism and Cheating The Syllabus Part 1 contains a section titled University Academic Integrity Statement which contains definitions and guidelines on this subject. In this course, only original work will be accepted for grading. This means that every usage of ideas or specific words and sentences from another source must have a citation and reference entry that follows APA guidelines. This includes all homework submissions as well as the Forum Topic Responses. Instructors are well aware that answer sheets to questions, problems, and cases are available from other students, from other universities on the internet, and from websites that specialize in unauthorized publication of textbook answers. Relying on these methods of obtaining answers to homework problems will not help you to pass the Final Exam. The university uses Turnitin (see the Turnitin.com website for more information) to scan Forum Topic Responses against its database of articles, textbooks, and reports. Instructors receive an Originality analysis from Turnitin that highlights matches of groups of words, sentences, and paragraphs with entries in the Turnitin database. The report produces an overall score that gives the percentage of the students submission that duplicates others work. It even lists the full text of the source for the match and the name of the author when it is from a Davenport student in the current or a previous section of FINC 510. Self-plagiarism in which a student re-submits partial or entire work from an earlier course at Davenport or another university is not acceptable at Davenport and is easily detected because the instructor will see a very high matching score on the assignment from Turnitin. Students who submit assignments that are given high Originality scores may receive a 0 grade for that assignment, and an Incident Report may be filed by the instructor. Work submitted that is substantially identical to another students may result in a 0 grade for both students involved, and Incident Reports may be filed by the instructors. For this reason, Davenport University discourages students from sharing copies of their work with other students. It is common knowledge that term papers, article reviews, essays, and other reports can be downloaded for free or purchased at internet research sites or essay labs. Usage of one of

these will result in a 0 grade for that assignment and an automatic Incident Report filed with the University by the instructor. A second Incident Report received by a student in the same course may result in a failure grade for the course. Refer to the Davenport University Graduate Catalog for more information about Incident Reports. APA Guidelines Because the MBA programs Capstone Course report requires complete adherence to all of the guidelines, it is to the students advantage to learn the proper formats as soon as possible. Point reductions for non-adherence to the APA Guidelines will be at the discretion of the instructor.
