Call for Applications The International PhD-Program Democracy, Knowledge, and Gender in a Transnational World (IPP Transnational) has

been selected for the nomination of international graduate students for DAADscholarships within the DAAD Graduate School Scholarship Program (GSSP). The funding scheme is open to international graduates particularly from developing and transition countries who would like to pursue their PhD within IPP Transnational. IPP Transnational offers a structured, three-year period of research at a high academic level to graduates of sociology, political science, and anthropology. PhD candidates will profit from an intellectually stimulating and supporting infrastructure that includes special counseling, intense academic supervision, and participation in the Forum Transnational with international visiting scholars as well as methods and theory workshops tailored to the needs of the participants. In addition, doctoral candidates will receive support in career planning. Special funding is available for research periods abroad and networking with other PhD candidates in independent doctoral working groups (DocAGs). IPPs profile combines three areas of research in a transnational perspective: 1. Challenges and innovations of democracy 2. Transformations of the gender order 3. Biosciences and society Special German courses and supervision opportunities will be made available for international PhD candidates. The programs working languages are English and German. IPP Transnational cooperates with partner universities in Scandinavia, Great Britain, Switzerland, and the United States. At the time of application candidates may not have lived in Germany for more than 13 months and the last final University exam must have taken place during the last six years. Scholarships are awarded in a two-stage competition and selection procedure. During the first stage, students apply with IPP Transnational. For this purpose the following documents need to be submitted: Five-page PhD proposal, in either German or English, in line with IPP Transnationals research design DAAD application form, Application for Research Grants and Study Scholarships, with all supporting documents in original and two copies. Curriculum vitae Letter of motivation which confirms that the applicant meets all necessary requirements for the IPP program and is aware of its scientific profile Two letters of recommendation by different professors from the applicants home university which were issued within the past two years. Referees may use either the DAAD Letter of Recommendation form 1/2

Copies of the following documents and their respective translations when necessary: o Secondary school leaving certificate or high school diploma qualifying you for admission to higher education in your own country o Transcripts or certificates of annual examinations taken at the home university showing grades and an explanation of the grading system o Certificates of any academic degrees or advanced qualifications For French speaking countries: Licence or Maitrise with Assez-Bien along with a DEA/DESS degree or a masters degree according to the LMD system The application must include a proposal of the intended field research (if applicable) English and/or German Language certificate Proof of internship(s) where appropriate List of publications (if applicable)

Deadline for the submission of all materials is 17 May 2013. After the closing of the call, the IPP Transnational Steering Committee will nominate candidates to DAAD. As a second stage of the selection procedure, a committee at DAAD comprised of university professors makes the final decision in the selection of the scholarship recipients. This also includes information on potential DAAD requirements for German language skills. DAAD decides on a case-by-case basis whether the applicant can attend a German language course before beginning the research grant (free of charge for the award holder).
