GABIONS

DO A TOUGH JOB

Rivers, sea coasts, roads and railvvays can all be subject to continuous or fluctuating erosion, demanding planned heavy defences vvhich are not moveable by the vvater forces involved. Among methods by vvhich embankments and revetments can be made, Gridyveld Gabions provide the cheapest possible effective solution. They are sheets of vvelded vvire mesh made se that they can be simply and quickly formed into boxes. Filled vvith boulders obtained locally, they positions vvhere they vvill offer maximum operating. are placed rovv upon rovv, inte resistance to the vvater f or ce s

For protection of areas subject to scour and erosion, carefully plannee siting of Gabions vvill not only arrest the natural activity, but also brine about other beneficial effects such as directional silting. river training increasing areas of habitable land. improved conditions for vvildlife and fi s+ and prevention of disrupted supply and sevverage lines.

FACTORS OF ECONOMY
The lovv initial cost of Gridvveld Gabions is enhanced by the ability to us. local infill by unskilled labour. Belovv-surface excavations. special piling an. drainage facilities are unnecessary. No special machinery. tools or main tenance are needed and there is no vve i t irvq for setting. curing or any "t irn eo vvork.

ASSEMBLY

AND SITING

Gridvveld Collapsible Gabions are supplied flat as a series ot o ariet s linke by vvelded rings at 6 spacings. Using unskilled labour. the flat Gabion are moved into position and the sides folded into a box shaped format vvrt an open lid. Adjoining faces are then secured vvith T clips or helical vvir (supplied vvith the Gabion) and it is then ready for filling after vvhich th lid is secured in a similar fashion. In most cases it is advisable to I H Gabions one to another. to edge or bottom layers or into the adJacen---o'o or fill. according to the conditions of site. structure and forces involved.

The progress of work is made easier by filling adjoining Gabions equally by stages which also prevents localised overstressing and distortion of the vvire.

PLACING AND BONDING GABIONS

When laying Gabions in rows it is advisable to bond upper layers to the foundation Gabions and to join corners in a row with wire to strengthen the structure and make the faces uniform. Courses should be staggered so that vertical edges do not coincide. thus spreading stresses'. All adjoining edges should be wired before filling.

-'ECIFICATION
Manufactured from hard drawn steel wire. Gridweld Standard Gabions are usually supplied as an assembly of panels of 3" x 3' wire mesh in which the wires are welded at every Intersection. Each panel is connected by welded rings at 6" spacings ready for folding into a box shape. Wire can be plain finish or heavily galvanised and of either 5 gauge or 10 gauge according to type of duty required.

RANGE OF SIZES

Any size and shape can be supplied to order so long as measurements are in 3" or 2" multiples. In cases of great length it may be found desirable to include a diaphragm across the centre to increase stiffness. The table shown here lists standard sizes of Gridweld Gabions together with their capacities and the ordering code for specification.

This leaflet has been prepared to assist Engineers in the formulation of a Specification and Bill of Quantities for the use of Weldmesh Gabion baskets and mattresses. ,,-. Further information is available through the booklet uB.R.C. Weldmesh Gabions and Mattresses", obtainable from B.R.C. Engineering Company, Head Office, Stafford or any of the Company's Branch Offices listed on the back page of this leaflet. A Weldmesh Gabion Advisory Service is also available and B.R.C. will be pleased to provide further technical information and advice upon request.

CUTTING AND FOLDING MESH

7.

Where shown on the Drawings, or otherwise directed by the Engineer, the gabion mesh shall be cut, folded and wired together to form mitre joints, angles, curves or slopes, which are not possible to obtain in the structures with the standard rectangular gabions, and where no such shaped gabions have been previously specified. The mesh must be cleanly cut and the surplus mesh cut completely out, or folded back or on to and neatly wired to, an adjacent gabion face. The cut edges of the mesh shall be securely laced together with tying wire in the manner specified under Erection above. The Assembly, Erection, Filling and Final Wiring of the re-shaped gabions shall otherwise be carried out as specified above.

SPECIAL FINISH
8. Where specified by the Engineer, the outer face of the gabions shall be carefully packed out by hand with stone of a size 100mm to 150mm where applicable.

PERMEABLE FILTER CLOTH (where applicable)

9. Where shown on the Drawings a permeable underlay as specified under Clause shall be used. Prior to laying the filter cloth the formation shall be prepared to line and level for the proposed gabion construction with any sharp edged or protruding stones removed in order to form a smooth and satisfactory formation to the approval of the Engineer.
