Rainfall Measuring
Volunteers Wanted
Did you know there is a site on the web that you can go to get a more
accurate measurement of precipitation around the area? It’s called
CoCoRaHS, which is an acronym for the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail
and Snow Network. CoCoRaHS is a unique, non-profit, community-based
network of volunteers of all ages and backgrounds working together to meas-
ure and map precipitation (rain, hail and snow).
The network began with the Colorado Climate Center at Colorado State
University in 1998. In the years since, CoCoRaHS has expanded rapidly with
over 10,000 weather observers in almost every state. The aim of this organ-
ization is to provide data for educational and research applications. This huge
network uses low-cost measurement tools, stressing training and education,
and utilizing an interactive Web-site.
So how do all these weather watchers put this together? Each time it rains,
snows or we get severe weather across the town, volunteers quickly take
measurements from their locations. These reports get recorded to the web
site at www.cocorahs.org. The data are then displayed and organized for me-
