BA (Hons) Film & Television Studies Experience: Creative Writing & Online Journalism at a top magazine | Office Administration

Profile
Passionate, driven and educated to degree-level, I have already gained notable experience at a global UK-based publication specialising in technology, games and gadgets within its review team, having several articles published in both its online and printed formats. This was acquired off the back of a degree with focuses on film and television, broadcasting and scriptwriting, with a respected dissertation produced as a result of an extremely good work ethic, determination and ambition to succeed. The latter are characteristics I feel have defined me in every stage of my career so far, and ones I aim to marry with my innate passion for the fields of media, new media, writing and broadcasting as I take them forth to a graduate or assistant position in the very near future.

Experience
Technology and Games Reviewer London Main Office, T3 Magazine (Future Publishing Ltd), London June 2012 (Internship) Internship acquired with top global magazine T3 immediately after graduating from university, writing primarily within the staple technology and games review sections of its online version. Involved handling products only briefly and many articles were written reactively to continuous developments, announcements and releases, requiring an exceptionally decisive nature, good flexibility and a strong use of initiative. Working to strict deadlines and with a strong sense of personal quality assurance and accountability were paramount. Also required strong communication and organisational attributes, a willingness to relocate to London, as well as an extremely mature adaptability to write instantly within the style of the publication.

Achievements:
Internship obtained after a submitted article impressed the Chief Editor of sister magazine Total Film at the first attempt 6 articles were published online and the design and content for another was selected for print in July 2012s issue Assistant to Managing Director & Assistant Surveyor EGP Building Services, Leicester September 2007 September 2011 (4 years)

I helped out with the CAD (Computer Aided Design) work which let me take part in designing and altering pipe work for ongoing jobs. This was interesting and also an important role which gave me huge responsibility as there were deadlines to be met.

I dealt with rebates for the company which involved working out totals of entitlements that can be reclaimed. This included working out percentages, adding up/multiplication of totals, researching graphs and speaking to the respected contacts to which to claim from.

Other general work responsibilities included filing, ordering stationary via telephone, visiting working sites and using online databases to build up contacts.

Achievements:

Improving my communication skills, writing skills, mathematic skills, organisation skills, individual work, working under instructions, listening skills etc. 4 years of employment that resulted from work experience Reason for departure: Resigned to concentrate on final year at university

Adam Palmer
The degree I studied gave me a great understanding in many areas such as the history of television/film, creative writing, modern day television/film, debates around television/film like race, gender, sex, youth etc. Some key modules I took were Avant-Garde, Critical Approaches, Documentary and News, British TV/Cinema, Globalisation, Semiotics plus many more. A module named Schedules & Margins was very interesting too. The modules I have studied gave me sufficient detail into different aspects of film and television. I learnt about the history of each side, the present and also the aesthetics. If I delve a little deeper, the modules helped me develop my personal skills in writing, communication, presenting, listening, note-taking, organisation with deadlines and meetings, working as an individual or in a group and therefore at times leading a group. All these characteristics that I have improved on are all needed to be an excellent employee, and I feel I can offer these characteristics at the best of my ability at all times.

Achievements:

Dissertation I am very proud of my dissertation as it was a huge amount of work and I am pleased how smoothly it progressed. The endurance of a dissertation piece is staggering, in my example, I spent over ten months working on it from the initial proposal, method research, personal statement, ethics forms, the bulk of the essay which calculated to 8000 words and finally the evaluation. Throughout these stages I had fortnightly meetings and deadlines which I met every time. This helped me organise my time and also keep me focused. My communication developed with my dissertation leader and so did my knowledge around my dissertation topic as I spent so much time researching and discussing it at my meetings.

Other achievements whilst at university I wrote a couple of articles to contribute to the university magazine Dusted, I played for 5-a-side football team with friends and I also took part in the film society committee where we would all meet every Thursday to watch films, discuss them and bond to build up relationships with colleagues.

Other Interests

My main interest is writing film reviews for a hobby and also to showcase my educated opinions, I also like to write articles on the latest issues/news in film and television. I also enjoy making short films as my degree gave me a better understanding on how to make a more professional movie, plus, it aided my passion to become stronger for film and television. Working towards fluency in French, due to having family in France and wishing to build upon my AS-level knowledge and understanding of the language to enhance my special skill set. I was also the captain of an under-25s indoor bowls team and represented my county at age 16. I played football for a local team for 3 years, training once a week and match days were on a Saturday. I often captained the team too.
