THAAH Date of release: 8th December 1972 The Name: Thaah is a word used in Punjabi and Urdu language

to describe the sound of a gun shot. It has a symbolic meaning in Punjabi too. It is used to describe a passion to end something. When we open fire at someone that means we want to finish that .the same symbolic meaning were used in this movie. Plot: a very simple plot. The traditional tribal and family feuds in rural Punjab and a friends sacrifice for friend. Sudhir played the role of Punjabi rural youth who is caught in a web of family

feuds and as a result is sentenced for 7 years in jail. His enemys role was played by Sultan Rahi who in the absence of Sudhir eyes for his fianc, Rozina the village girl. In jail Sudhir become friend of Shahid, an educated urban young boy who is a poet and is sentenced for writing against the political system prevailing in the country. Latter in the movie Shahid fall in love with Rozina, not knowing that she is the fiance of his friend but when he comes to know he sacrifices his life to save his friend and his love.

Political background: The movie was released in 1972,A year after Pakistan Peoples Party took over the government, after a long tenure of military dictatorship in which the founder of the party Z.A.Butto himself was foreign minister but resigned after some difference with Ayub Khan the then president and launched his own political party by the name of Pakistan Peoples Party. PPP was the first party in Pakistan to represent poor people and against feudal system other than the Communist and Socialist Parties who were banned in Pakistan at that time. The name of the movie actually is symbolic and a song in the movie defines it. The song was picturise as a stage drama and it said; Zalman de zulm de akheer hone thaah.(the reign of atrocity and exploitation will know end because it is the peoples age) The message was clear and the role played by shahid that of a poet who writes against feudal is very much like the situation prevailing in the country in 1960s when many writers and poets belonging to leftist movement were send behind the bars. Socio-Cultural background: The village of Punjab and its cultural environment is visible in the movie. The main theme of the movie is feudal system and its implications for the poor farmers. For the sake of land, the human life is sacrificed. Family feuds last generation to generation and this vicious circle continues to take human lives. The dresses in the movie show the cultural background of the characters. The dress of Sudhir ,Sutan Rahi and Afzal are typical Punjabi with embroided kameez and Dhoti. Shahid wore Kameez ,Pajama with Achkan and Sherwani presenting an urbanized youth and poet of the late 60s.the other important thing is the close up shots of Vat 36 bottle in a song that shows the time when drinking liquor was legally allow in the country. A fight scene between Sudhir and Afzal in the jail shows the jail culture in Pakistan .In jails the prisoners who are influential and are from mafia groups are treated as vips .the jail administration looks unable to control them. in this fight scene the police man on duty whistles and whistles but no body turns around and the fight continues. A rape scene in the fields is another prove how the sensor board at that time approve this type of scenes .the scene is very bold one and the artist perform exceptionally well in this scene. Direction: The director Diljeet Mirza proved to be talented director. He seems at ease with the theme and presented it with very balanced way. The message he wanted to convey is clear. The writer Waris Ludhianvi also penned the songs. The dialogues are crispy at some moments. In a scene one character addresses the audience and says many of you under these clean dresses are dirty. The director proved his abilities in the scene when police raid the home of Sudhir to arrest him but his mother try to convince the police that he is innocent. She delivers lines full with passion holding his son in her arms. In this scene the camera remains focused on the face of mother and showed the back of the hero. The role of mother was played by Nayyar Sultana as a guest actress in the movie, and she done it very well.

Performance: One commendable performance is by the art director of the movie Islam bin Shahab, who created wonderful sets especially at the picturisation of the song Pehli wari aj inna akhian ne takia. Music by Safdar Hussain is popular even know, the following songs were a rage when the movie was released. Aa sinay naal lag ja thah kar kay.(Noorjehan) Assan ki ki bheis wataye, yaar Teray milnay nu. .(Noorjehan) Pehli wari ajj unhan akhian nay takia.(Ghulam Ali) Tak Sajna, dora meri akh da, lishke way Long. .(Noorjehan) In acting all the actors did well.Sudhir ,Shahid,Rozina,Sultan Rahi and Rangeela played their character with ease and perfection.Even the new actor Jamal did perform very well. Trivia: The famous classical singer Ustan Fateh Ali Khan not only sang a quali in the movie but also performed in the quali. The director Diljeet Mirza also acted in the movie. Producer of the movie Mian Javed latter marry Rani, one of pakistans top class actress at the time, but it lasted for few months only.
