Universal Gear
store robbed

The D.C. mens clothing store
Universal Gear, which is gay owned,
lost about $5,000 in merchandise on
Saturday morning in a snatch-and-grab
robbery committed by two unidentied
male suspects, according to store
ofcial Yemi Mengistu.
Mengistu said the incident at the
upscale store at 1529 14th St., N.W.,
marked the fth time it has been
victimized by similar robberies since
2009. As it has since 2009, Universal
Gears owner, David Franco, has posted
on YouTube a video of the robbery
in progress taken from the stores
surveillance cameras.
D.C. police have listed the incident as
a robbery and assault, Mengistu told the
Blade, because one of the two suspects
assaulted her as she tried to stop them
from leaving while they carried large
quantities of clothes form the stores racks.
Franco has urged police to assign
more foot patrol ofcers to the 14th
Street business district where Universal
Gear is located as a means of deterring
what he has called an ongoing series of
robberies by brazen young men, some
appearing to be teenagers, who have
targeted his store.
Similar to the past incidents, the
latest two suspects posed as customers
browsing the store before grabbing
merchandise and running out into a
getaway car parked nearby.
The store is offering a $500 reward
for information leading to the arrest
and conviction of any of the suspects
involved in the robberies. Anyone with
information about the latest or past
incidents should call Universal Gear at
202-319-0136 and the D.C. police crime
line at 202-727-9099.

Gay Md. man faces
charges in hit-and-run
A gay Annapolis man faces charges in
connection with an alleged hit-and-run
accident that left a D.C. woman dead.
Prosecutors contend Joel Bromwell
struck Ruby Whiteld with his SUV on
March 21 as she and two other people
were walking across Florida Avenue
at the intersection of 11th Street in
Northeast D.C. after attending a
meeting at New Samaritan Baptist
Church. The police charging document
alleges Bromwells vehicle dragged
Whiteld for approximately 86 feet
before becoming dislodged from it.
Bromwell reportedly told police ofcers
who took him into custody that he had
just left Cobalt before the incident. The
police charging document says he told
them he had two Captain Morgan rum
and cokes over a period of two hours.
Bromwell, 32, faces charges that
include intent to kill another and to
inict serious bodily injury on another
with a conscious disregard of an
extreme risk of death or serious bodily
injury to another.

Trans advocate returns
to El Salvador
A transgender activist from D.C.
is among those who attended El
Salvadors rst LGBT rights conference
that took place from March 12-17.
Casa Ruby CEO Ruby Corado, who
ed the Central American nation in 1986
during the countrys civil war, spoke at a
vigil were advocates read the names of 121
LGBT mostly trans murder victims
during the rst day of the conference that
took place at Central American University
in San Salvador, the countrys capital.
She also visited several LGBT
advocacy groups in the capital one
of the organizations had pictures of the
bodies of those who had been killed
displayed on the wall.
Corado said she experienced
homophobia and transphobia herself
when she ate lunch with a group of
LGBT advocates during the conference.
She said the servers in the university
cafeteria where they ate took their
orders in a very mean way. Others
called them maricones or faggots.
Corado said she also received what she
described as that hateful look on the
days she could not pass as a woman.
I always knew that freedom is
something we take for granted here,
she told the Washington Blade. Being
gay and being free is something that is
totally, totally taken for granted here.
Because these people when they
choose to be free, they become part of
the 121 people that get killed.
Salvadorian law bans discrimination
based on sexual orientation and HIV
status, but the U.S. State Department
noted in its 2011 Human Rights Report
that it remains widespread. Anti-
trans discrimination and violence in the
country remains endemic.
The Salvadorian LGBT rights group
Entre Amigos reported to the State
Department that police and other
public ofcials continue to engage in
violence and discrimination against
sexual minorities.
American University Washington
College of Law students Brandon
Roman and Arli Christian, who is an
intern at Whitman Walker-Health, also
attended the gathering.
Aside from participating in the ALDES
conference, Corado also visited her
father while in El Salvador. She and her
two sisters also returned to the home
in which she lived and the elementary
school she attended.
I put a lot of closure on that because
many of us that come from different
countries in a way we are in the perfect
situation without persecution, Corado
said as she became emotional about
eeing the country. Youre just taken
away from these places. And all of
a sudden you wake up in a different
country like I did 27 years ago and you
dont have time to say goodbye.

D.C. Center signs lease for new space
After three months of negotiations with city ofcials, the D.C. LGBT
Community Center on Saturday signed a 15-year lease to rent space in the
citys Reeves Center municipal building at 14th and U streets, N.W.
Michelle Ross, the LGBT Centers vice president and chair of its Relocation
Committee, said the lease-signing clears the way for the center to arrange
for an extensive renovation of the rst oor, storefront space that will be the
centers new home.
Our projected move-in date range is toward the end of June, Ross said.
She said a start-up date for the construction has yet to be set, but center
ofcials expect the work to begin soon.
Center President Michael Sessa told the Blade earlier this month that shortly
after the D.C. Department of General Services accepted the centers proposal for
renting the space through a competitive bidding process, the center discovered
more renovation work would be needed than originally expected.
Among other things, a long-standing rat infestation problem requires that the
entire space be gutted and redone. Under a provision in the lease that the DGS
informed the center about at the outset, the tenant must accept the space as is
and be responsible for the cost of any repairs and renovation work.
However, Sessa said DGS didnt inform the center until later in the process
that it would be responsible for a monthly fee of $1,500 over and above the
$4,000 rent to cover utilities and maintenance services.
Ross told the Blade on Tuesday that through negotiations with the center,
DGS agreed to drop the utilities and maintenance fee in exchange for
adjusting the rent to $4,500 per month.

More senators announce
marriage support
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
Democratic Sens. Tim Kaine (Va.),
Jay Rockefeller (W.Va.) and Jon Tester
(Mont.) have joined a growing list of U.S.
senators who now support extending
marriage rights to same-sex couples.
Also among the senators clarifying
their same-sex marriage support in
recent days are Alaska Sen. Mark Begich
(D), and as the Blade has reported,
Virginias Mark Warner (D), Missouris
Claire McCaskill (D) and Ohios Robert
Portman (R).
In a statement to the Washington
Blade, Kaine echoed a remark made this
week to the Times Dispatch of Richmond.
I believe all people, regardless
of sexual orientation, should be
guaranteed the full rights to the legal
benets and responsibilities of marriage
under the Constitution, Kaines
statement reads. I hope the Supreme
Court will afrm that principle.
Joining Kaine is West Virginias
Rockefeller, who told ABC News that he
believes same-sex couples should have
the right to marry.
Churches and ministers should
never have to perform marriages that
violate their religious beliefs, but the
government shouldnt discriminate
against people who want to marry just
because of their gender, Rockefeller
said in a statement emailed to ABC
News yesterday, emphasizing his
evolution on the topic, inuenced by
the younger members of his family.
West Virginia bars same-sex couples
from marrying in law, but the state has
not amended its constitution to bar
such nuptials, leaving the door open for
the legislature there to change the law
in the future.
Also among those backing full
marriage rights for same-sex couples
is Democratic Sen. Jon Tester, whose
Montana like Virginia, Missouri, Ohio
and Alaska bars such nuptials in the
state constitution.
Tester took to his Facebook page to
announce his change of heart.
Montanans believe in the right to
make a good life for their families. How
they dene a family should be their
business and their business alone,
Tester wrote. Im proud to support
marriage equality because no one
should be able to tell a Montanan or
any American who they can love and
who they can marry.
Recent polls have shown a marked
increase in support for same-sex marriage
in America, with growth particularly strong
among the youngest voters.
The avalanche of senatorial support
comes as the Supreme Court hears oral
arguments this week in two cases that
broach the topic of same-sex marriage
recognition.
Via her Tumblr account, McCaskill
made her relatively low-key
announcement in a posting with a title
that cites a biblical passage: And now
abide faith, hope, love, these three;
but the greatest of these is love. I
Corinthians 13.
In her posting, McCaskill says she
reached her decision because many of her
gay and lesbian friends were embracing
long-term committed relationships and
she found herself unable to look them in
the eye without honestly confronting this
uncomfortable inequality.
Supporting marriage equality for gay
and lesbian couples is simply the right
thing to do for our country, a country
founded on the principals of liberty and
equality, McCaskill says.
McCaskill notes signicant debate
is taking place within the United
States on marriage rights for same-sex
couples and says people of faith of have
taken different sides on the issue. She
maintains churches shouldnt be forced
to recognize a union thats inconsistent
with their beliefs, but government is a
different matter.
NFL player preparing to come out?
PHILADELPHIA Writing for CBS Sports, columnist Mike Freeman has
revealed that NFL players say they know of a current player preparing to
come out as gay.
Based on interviews over the past several weeks with current and former
players, Freeman writes, Im told that a current gay NFL player is strongly
considering coming out publicly within the next few months and after
doing so, the player would attempt to continue his career.
Though a few players have come out after retiring, there has never been
an active openly gay player, but Freeman believes that will soon change.
Speaking to Freeman, veteran NFL star Scott Fujita of the Cleveland Browns
said, I honestly think the players of the NFL have been ready for an openly
gay player for quite some time now.
Utah marriage ban goes to court
SALT LAKE CITY Three couples led suit in U.S. District Court, Monday,
challenging Utahs voter approved constitutional prohibition on same-sex nuptials.
The groups bringing the suit, which alleges the law violates the U.S.
Constitution, include two same-sex couples who have been barred from
marrying, as well as one couple whose Iowa marriage is not recognized by
the state of Utah.
As attorney general, I swore an oath to defend the Utah Constitution
and will do so by defending against this lawsuit with every resource at my
disposal, said Utah A.G. John Swallow, according to the Daily Herald.
Ariz. lawmaker introduces anti-trans bill
PHOENIX After failing to gain support for a bill that would make it a crime
for some transgender Arizonans to use the bathroom, an Arizona lawmaker
is now attempting to make it illegal to punish businesses that discriminate.
Republican John Kavanagh has updated his proposed language, prior to its
committee hearing this week, to protect businesses and facilities that choose
to bar trans visitors from using the restroom corresponding to their gender.
The bill initially called for making the act of using a bathroom opposite from
one designated for a persons birth gender a class one misdemeanor.
According to the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, Kavanaghs
efforts to target transgender Arizonans follows passage of a local ordinance
in Phoenix that prohibits public accommodation discrimination based on
gender identity.
Gay Florida mayor in DUI arrest
GAINESVILLE, Fla. Nearing the end of his rst two-year term, gay
Gainesville, Fla., mayor Craig Lowe will likely face tough criticism after a crash
last week resulting in a drunk driving arrest.
Lowe was found by police asleep at the wheel of his car, which had suffered
major front-end damage and had four at tires. Lowe told police hed fallen
asleep at the wheel after having three beers. Along with the DUI, he was
charged with property damage and careless driving.
I apologize for the harm that this situation has caused to my friends,
supporters, and the citizens of Gainesville, Lowe said in a statement after his
release. Moving forward, I will work hard to regain your condence and trust.
Lowe faces a run-off election in April against former city council member,
Ed Braddy, who was himself arrested for a DUI in 2006.

MINUTES FROM ROCKVILLE,
Justices grill attorneys
over states rights
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
Questioning at the Supreme Court
during oral arguments on Wednesday
was just as intense as the previous day
as justices grilled attorneys on standing
and federalism issues related to the
Defense of Marriage Act.
The prospects of the court striking
down the 1996 law seem strong as no
justices expressed any particular love
for DOMA, but its possible the court
may not reach consideration of the
constitutionality of the law because of
standing and jurisdictional issues.
Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg,
a Clinton appointee, expressed concern
over DOMA because benets
including Social Security survivor benets
and access to family medical leave are
withheld from married same-sex couples
under the law.
Under DOMA, Ginsburg said one
might ask the question What kind of
marriage is this? and compared the law
to a statute that creates real marriage,
and then skim-milk marriage.
Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy,
a Reagan appointee whos considered
a swing vote in the case, made many
inquiries about DOMA, but at one point
may have tipped his hand when he talked
about the real risk of encroaching on
state power to dene marriage.
At issue in the case is Section 3
of DOMA, which prohibits federal
recognition of same-sex marriage. As
a result of that 1996 law, Edith Windsor
had to pay $363,000 in estate taxes in
2009 upon the death of her spouse,
Thea Spyer.
The courtroom was just as packed for
the DOMA arguments as it was for the
Prop 8 arguments on Tuesday. Among
those seen in attendance were Human
Rights Campaign President Chad
Grifn, Senior Adviser to President
Obama Valerie Jarrett and House
Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).
Robert Kaplan, a New York-based
private attorney working in coordination
with the American Civil Liberties Union,
said DOMA violates equal protection
rights under the U.S. Constitution for not
just Windsor, but all married gay couples.
Because of DOMA, many thousands
of people in nine states and the District of
Columbia are being [treated differently]
by the federal government simply
because theyre gay, Kaplan said.
Arguing on behalf of DOMA was Paul
Clement, a former U.S. solicitor general
under President George W. Bush
who was hired by House Republicans
to defend the law after the Obama
administration declined to do so in
February 2011.
Clement said DOMA helps create
uniformity for the federal government
as the democratic process is underway
deciding the issue of marriage.
All DOMA does is take this term
where it appears in federal law and
denes it where it applies in federal
law, Clement said.
U.S. Solicitor General Donald Verrilli,
whos taken up litigation against DOMA
on behalf of the Obama administration,
argued DOMA is unconstitutional
because it violates equal protection for
gay people under the U.S. Constitution.
What Section 3 does is exclude an
array of benets from lawfully married
couples, Verrilli said.
Further, he said DOMA should be
subject to heightened scrutiny, or a
greater assumption its unconstitutional,
because of the terrible discrimination
faced by gay couples.
Verrilli also disputed Clements
argument that DOMA helps ensure
uniformity for the U.S. government,
saying if anything, it makes federal
administration more difcult.
Standing was such a key issue in
the DOMA case that justices allotted
extended time and the rst half of the
oral arguments to consider the issue.
There are two questions: whether
House Republican-led Bipartisan Legal
Advisory Group has standing to defend
DOMA in court, and whether the
Supreme Court has jurisdiction to hear
the case because the U.S. government
appealed even though it got what it
wanted when the district ruled against
the anti-gay law.
Vicki Jackson, a Harvard law professor
hired by the court to answer this question,
made her case for why BLAG doesnt
have standing and the court doesnt
have jurisdiction to decide the issue.
Jackson said the U.S. government
lacks standing to appeal because it has
not asked the court to overturn lower
courts decisions.
She also expressed doubts about
BLAGs standing, saying separation
of powers will not be meaningful
if Congress stays out of defense of a
statute unless it thinks the executive
branch is doing its job badly.
Clement maintained BLAG has
standing because the House has
an interest in preserving a law if the
executive branch determines it wont
defend the measure in court.
The Houses [purpose] is to pass
legislation, and if its going to be
repealed, only be repealed through
a process in which the House
participates, Clement said.
Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor,
an Obama appointee, expressed
skepticism that BLAG has standing to
defend DOMA in court.
But the appointment of BLAG
is strange to me because its not in
the statute, its in the House rules,
Sotomayor said.
Deputy Solicitor General Sri Srinavasan
argued the court has jurisdiction to defend
DOMA, pointing to court precedent
created by INS v. Chadha, an immigration-
related case that came before the court
in 1982. Srinavasan also said the U.S.
government suffers aggrievement, which
allows it to appeal the case.
Associate Justice Antonin Scalia
expressed displeasure with the
Justice Departments decision to stop
defending the law and creating a
situation in which its appealing a case
that was decided in its favor.
I dont want these cases to come
before this court all the time, Scalia said.
Its difcult to say if the court will rule
on the basis of standing because justices
challenged the views on whichever
attorney was speaking whether they
were arguing in favor of standing or not.
A ruling on the basis of standing would
likely be more limited in its impact on
gay couples as opposed to a nationwide
ruling striking down DOMA.
I think it went great, Edith Windsor
told reporters during a news conference
after she and her attorneys left the court.
I think it went beautifully. I thought the
justices were gentle they were direct.
They asked all the right questions. I
didnt feel any hostility or any sense of
inferiority. In the midst of my grief I
realized that the federal government
was treating us as strangers, Windsor
said. I paid a humongous estate tax.
And it means selling a lot of stuff to do
it, and it wasnt easy.
She also noted during the news
conference that she did not wear a
wedding ring when she and Spyer
became engaged because she had not
come out of the closet.
I am today an out lesbian who just
sued the United States of America,
which is kind of overwhelming for me,
Windsor said.
She added she remains optimistic the
justices will rule in her favor.
I think its going to be good,
Windsor said.

Justices appear wary
of issuing sweeping,
national ruling
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
The atmosphere at the U.S. Supreme
Court was tense on Tuesday as justices
hammered attorneys with tough questions
on the constitutionality of Californias
Proposition 8 with a particular emphasis
on inquiries about standing.
Within moments of the opening of
the oral arguments in the Prop 8 case,
known as Hollingsworth v. Perry, justices
interrupted both Charles Cooper, who
is arguing in favor of Prop 8, and Ted
Olson, who is arguing against it on
behalf of two plaintiff gay couples, with
questions about standing.
Anti-gay groups, such as
ProtectMarriage.com, are defending
Prop 8 in court because California
ofcials Gov. Jerry Brown and
Attorney General Kamala Harris have
elected not to do so. Whether these
groups have standing to defend the law
is a question posed by the court.
Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor,
who was appointed by President
Obama, was among those asking
questions about standing, saying its
counterintuitive for a state to grant
standing to proponents of a ballot
initiative because their views are in
support of the measure.
Cooper said the California Supreme
Court in 2011 ruled that proponents
of a ballot initiative like Prop 8 bear a
responsibility to defend the measure in
court should state ofcials decline to do so.
Otherwise, public ofcials could effectively
veto a measure by declining to defend it.
But Olson, a former U.S. solicitor
general under President George W.
Bush, disputed the notion that anti-gay
groups have standing in the Prop 8 case
because they are not elected ofcials.
Because youre not an ofcer of the
State of California, you dont have a
duciary duty to the State of California,
youre not bound by the ethical
standards of an ofcer of the State of
California to represent the State of
California, you could have conicts of
interest, Olson said. And as I said, you
could be incurring enormous legal fees
on behalf of the state when the state
hasnt decided to go that route.
The issue of standing is seen as crucial
because if the court determines that anti-
gay groups dont have standing to defend
Prop 8, the ruling of U.S. District Judge
Vaughn Walker would remain in place
and marriage rights for same-sex couples
would likely be restored in California.
Associate Justice Samuel Alito
expressed skepticism during the oral
arguments that proponents of Prop
8 lack standing to defend their ballot
measure, indicating someone should
be able to defend the statute if public
ofcials decline to do so.
In a state that has initiative, the
whole process would be defeated if
the only people who could defend the
statute are the elected public ofcials,
Alito said. The whole point of
the initiative process was to allow the
people to circumvent public ofcials
about whom they were suspicious.
Justices known for being conservative
hinted at the way they may rule in
the case. Alito, appointed by former
President George W. Bush, cautioned
against a ruling in favor of same-sex
marriage, which he said is newer than
cell phones and the Internet.
There isnt a lot of data about its
effect, Alito said. It may turn out to be
a good thing. It may turn out not to be
a good thing.
Associate Justice Antonin Scalia said
the legalization of same-sex marriage
would necessitate the legalization of
gay adoption, and sociologists have
considerable disagreements on
whether that causes harm to a child.
I dont think we know the answer to
that question, Scalia said.
Its unclear what disagreements
Scalia was referencing. Just last week,
the American Academy of Pediatrics
endorsed same-sex marriage, saying it
helps children. Following Scalias remarks,
Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg
reminded Scalia that adoption isnt at
issue because California has legalized
adoption rights for gay couples.
Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy,
an appointee of former President
Reagan whos considered a swing
vote, acknowledged that sociological
information on the issue is new, but said
children who are currently living with
same-sex partners are suffering legal
injury as a result of Prop 8.
There is an immediate legal injury
or legal what could be a legal injury,
and thats the voice of these children,
Kennedy said. There are some 40,000
children in California that live with same-
sex parents, and they want their parents to
have full recognition and full status.
Chief Justice John Roberts, another
Bush appointee, made comments in
an exchange with Olson suggesting
he doesnt believe gay couples have a
right to marry. Many had hoped Roberts
would vote to overturn Prop 8 because
he sided with more liberal justices in
the court decision upholding the health
care reform law.
Im not sure that its right to view
this as excluding a particular group,
Roberts said. When the institution
of marriage developed historically,
people didnt get around and say lets
have this institution, but lets keep out
homosexuals. The institution developed
to serve purposes that, by their nature,
didnt include homosexual couples.
When Olson pointed out that gay
couples had the right to marry before
Prop 8 was passed, Roberts responded
by saying that it was only 140 days after
the California Supreme Court ruled in
favor of same-sex marriage.
Roberts then asked Olson whether its
more reasonable to view the situation
as the state court making a change to
an institution thats been around since
time immemorial.
The California Supreme Court, like
this Supreme Court, decides what the
law is, Olson replied. The California
Supreme Court decided that the Equal
Protection and Due Process Clauses
of that California Constitution did not
permit excluding gays and lesbians
from the right to get married.
The courtroom was crowded with
observers who were both for and against
Prop 8. Among those in attendance
was California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom,
who gained notoriety in 2004 when as
San Francisco mayor he distributed
marriage licenses to gay couples before
the state court ordered him to stop.
U.S. Solicitor General Donald Verrilli
argued against Prop 8 on behalf of the
Obama administration, saying Prop 8
should be struck down because gay
people have suffered a history of
discrimination and the law should be
subject to heightened scrutiny.
Verrilli said the Obama administration
is not taking a position on whether
same-sex marriage should be legalized
throughout the country as a result of the
ruling but said the door could be open
to such a ruling in future cases. Instead,
Verrilli advocated the idea of a nine-
state solution. Under that approach,
states that offer domestic partnerships or
civil unions, but not same-sex marriage,
would have to allow gay couples to enter
into the union of marriage.
The solicitor general said Californias
own domestic partnership law providing
gay couples legal benets but not the
distinction of marriage undercuts any
rationale for withholding the label of
marriage for gay couples.
But the idea of a nine-state solution
seemed distasteful to justices. Associate
Justice Stephen Breyer, an appointee of
former President Bill Clinton, noted that
states that provide absolutely no legal
recognition to gay couples provide
more harm to gay couples than the
states that offer domestic partnerships.
Verrili also maintained the Obama
administration isnt taking a position
on whether proponents of Prop 8 have
standing to defend the law, but said the
notion they lack Article III standing in
court is the stronger argument.
Both the attorneys for and against
Prop 8 also made their cases on the
constitutionality of the measure that
were along the lines of the briefs they
previously submitted to the court.
Cooper maintained California voters
in 2008 were essentially hitting a pause
button by approving Prop 8 and were
awaiting further information of the
impact on other parts of the country
where same-sex marriage is legal.
That would hardly be irrational for that
voter to say, I believe that this experiment,
which is now only four years old, even in
Massachusetts, the oldest state that is
conducting it, to say, I think it better for
California to hit the pause button and
await additional information from the
jurisdictions where this experiment is still
maturing, Cooper said.
Olson, on the other hand, argued
Prop 8 was unconstitutional because
the measure walls off from a certain
group of people the right to marry.
Its an individual right that this court
again and again and again has said: the
right to get married, the right to have
the relationship of marriage a personal
right, Olson said. Its a part of the
right of privacy, association, liberty and
the pursuit of happiness.

Some camped for 3 days in
hopes of witnessing history
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
Three days before justices heard oral
arguments on Californias Proposition
8, supporters of marriage equality
were already lined up before the U.S.
Supreme Court on Saturday to ensure
theyd have a seat for the historic event.
Jeffrey DeSoto, a gay 33-year-old
computer programmer from New York,
stood cross-legged in line next to his
sign reading: I AM A 2ND CLASS
CITIZEN: NOH8. Near him were his
sleeping bag, air mattress, blanket and
solar cell to charge his cell phone.
New York State does have marriage
equality, but I would want marriage
equality across the entire country,
DeSoto said. Thats an outside
outcome to this, but it is there, so I
denitely would want to have been at
the case where that happens.
Jordan Haedtler, a straight 24-year-
old resident of Oakland, Calif., said
hes closely watched the Prop 8 case,
Hollingsworth v. Perry, from its beginnings
and attended oral arguments in the case
when they were before the U.S. Ninth
Circuit Court of Appeals.
Im kind of a public policy and
politics junkie, Haedtler said. Ive
been to several oral arguments in other
cases as well, but this case holds a lot of
importance for me because I really think
that gay rights and marriage equality
are one of the main civil rights issues of
our time.
As of Saturday afternoon, about 15
people were camped out outside the
building awaiting entry to Tuesdays
hearing. Wearing coats and hats to keep
warm in a lingering winter cold, those in
line occupied themselves with journal
writing, conversation and newspaper
reading to pass the time.
For DeSoto, simply coming early on
Tuesday morning wasnt enough. He
arrived Friday afternoon to wait in line
before the Supreme Court with days
remaining before the arguments for an
assurance he would have access to the
courtroom.
Actually, I did a little research,
DeSoto said. I found the names of
people who waited in line for the
Affordable Care Act, and then I found
them on Facebook and messaged a
couple of them. One girl messaged me
back, and I asked her how far in advance
she had come. I think she said four days,
so I pretty much tried to match that.
DeSoto said those waiting in line have
a good amount of camaraderie. As if
living in a commune on the sidewalk of
First Street, he said theyre offering food
to each other and keeping an eye on
each others possessions as they wait.
Among them were a gay couple
seeking a ruling in favor of their marriage
rights; college students with an afnity
for legal cases and equality issues; a
group of older black men at the front of
the line played a game of dominoes to
pass the time.
Tyrone Henderson, a 48-year-old
D.C. resident, talked about his personal
support for marriage equality as he
glanced over the Metro section of the
Washington Post.
I think people should have the choice
of what they want to do, Henderson
said. You should be able to be with who
you want to be with instead of trying to
predict who you should be with. I gure
you should have the choice whether you
want to marry a man or a woman.
Each of the people in line was a
supporter of marriage equality. No
opponents of marriage rights for gay
couples were waiting outside and braving
the chilly weather to attend the arguments.
There was one protester who was wearing
a sandwich sign, but he was speaking
out against the Obama administrations
extrajudicial killing of suspected terrorists
overseas by drone attack.
DeSoto said he was heckled by a
passer-by who deemed marriage rights
for gay couples an unimportant issue.
I did have one person come by a
heckler, a dissident, whatever, DeSoto
said. He didnt like my sign. He pretty
much said marriage equality was not a
serious issue and that were all throwing
a hissy t.
Those in line were also undaunted
by a storm that brought a slushy mix of
snow and rain on Sunday and Monday as
they awaited a place in the courtroom.
Darienn Powers, a 19-year-old straight
student from the State University of New
York at New Paltz, said she came early
in the morning on Saturday prepared in
the event of inclement weather.
Ive heard that it might be snowing,
Powers said. Im wearing my rubberized
rain boots, so my feet will be dry, and
I have an umbrella. Otherwise, Im just
taking it as it comes.
A common theme among those
waiting in line was a plan to stay for oral
arguments for Prop 8 on Tuesday, but
leave without attending the arguments
on Wednesday for the Defense of
Marriage Act. The reasoning aside
from the need to return to work was
the belief the Prop 8 proceedings were
more historic than the DOMA case.
Still, that didnt take away from the
historic nature of what theyd be able to
see on the rst day of oral arguments on
marriage equality.
Dexter Smith, a gay junior political
science major at Georgia State University,
said he expected an intense experience
on that day for those on both sides of the
marriage equality movement.
I think its going to be packed, Smith
said. Youre going to have protesters
out here. People saying crazy things; you
already having people saying crazy things.
Its going to be crazy, and I just want to be
here to be in the thick of things.

Supporters and opponents of
marriage rights for same-sex couples
gathered outside the U.S. Supreme
Court on Tuesday as the justices heard
oral arguments in a case that challenges
Californias Proposition 8.
Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendon
Ayanbadejo, OutServe-SLDN Executive
Director Allyson Robinson, National
Organization for Women President
Terry ONeill and gay retired New
Hampshire Bishop V. Gene Robinson
and his daughter Ella were among
those who spoke at a rally in support of
nuptials for gays and lesbians that drew
a few thousand people.
Robinson also joined Rev. Dennis
Wiley of Covenant Baptist Church of
Christ in Southwest Washington, Rev.
Abena McCray of Unity Fellowship
Church in D.C., Sister Jeannine Gramick
of New Ways Ministry in Mount Rainier,
Md., Washington National Cathedral
Dean Gary Hall and others at an
interfaith service at the Lutheran Church
of the Reformation near the Supreme
Court earlier in the day.
We all know that something special
is happening here today, Republican
strategist Margaret Hoover said.
Thats why we are here in love to
demonstrate that all Americans have
the constitutional right and the freedom
to marry the person they love.
D.C. Congressional Del. Eleanor
Holmes Norton pointed out nine states
and the nations capital allow same-sex
couples to marry.
There are no second-class citizens in
America, Norton said. There are no
second-class marriages in America.
Jo-Ann Shain and Mary Jo Kennedy
of Brooklyn, N.Y., and their daughter
Aliya Shain held a poster with a picture
of Edie Windsor outside the Supreme
Court. Windsor is the New York City
widow who challenged the Defense of
Marriage Act after she paid $363,000 in
estate taxes in 2009 when her partner of
more than 40 years died. The couple,
who had been together for 31 years,
in 2004 challenged the Empire States
same-sex marriage ban.
New York State Supreme Court
Justice Doris Ling-Cohan in 2005 ruled
the law was unconstitutional.
This is a watershed moment for our
community, Jo-Ann Shain told the
Washington Blade before she, her wife
whom she married in New York in 2011
after the states same-sex marriage law
took effect and their daughter held
up their signs to shield members of
the Westboro Baptist Church who had
gathered on the sidewalk. This is history
in the making and we wouldnt miss it.
Baltimore resident Lucas McCahill,
who is an organizer with the American
Humanist Association, said the claim
the United States is a free country is
actually a blatant lie. She told the Blade
outside the Supreme Court the justices
ruling in favor of marriage rights for same-
sex couples would change that reality.
Its just a part of my basic values
to uphold equality for everybody, no
matter who you are, what you look like,
McCahill said.
David Prez, president of the Latino
GLBT History Project board of directors,
agreed.
Were really excited to be out here
to support marriage equality, he said,
noting his organization is among those
that supported last years campaign
in support of referenda on Marylands
same-sex marriage law and DREAM
Act that both passed. We denitely
want the justices to know the American
people support marriage equality.
As same-sex marriage supporters
spoke outside the Supreme Court, an
estimated 2,000 opponents of nuptials
for gays and lesbians marched onto First
Street, N.E. Some held a large banner
that read Let the people decide, while
others waved signs that said Vote for
holy matrimony and Children do better
with a mom and a dad! in Spanish.
Backers of nuptials for gays and
lesbians gathered adjacent to the
marchers and shouted slogans in
support of the issue. Several of them
held American, gay Pride and Human
Rights Campaign ags as they squared
off against the protesters.
Were here in order to defend civil
society from one of the greatest assaults
that its experienced in its history, Father
Johannes Smith of New York told the
Blade outside the Supreme Court. The
whole idea of homosexual marriage
is an assault on the foundations of a
sound society.
Christina Hughes, who traveled to
D.C. from Miami to march against
nuptials for gays and lesbians, said
she feels marriage is dened by God
between a man and a woman.
Who are we to try and change that,
she said. God is our creator and we
should go by Gods laws.
Roughly 1,000 same-sex marriage
opponents attended a rally on the
National Mall after they marched to the
U.S. Supreme Court.
National Organization for Marriage
President Brian Brown; Archbishop
Salvatore Cordileone of the U.S.
Conference of Catholic Bishops;
Concerned Women for America
President Penny Nance; Ruth Institute
President Jennifer Roback Morse;
American Values President Gary Bauer;
New York State Sen. Ruben Diaz, Sr.;
and Tami Fitzgerald, executive director
of the North Carolina Values Coalition,
are among those who spoke.
The Family Leader CEO Bob Vander
Plaats noted Rev. Billy Graham and
newly elected Pope Francis opposition
to same-sex marriage. He also spoke
about the 2010 recall of the three Iowa
Supreme Court justices who ruled a
year earlier the Hawkeye States ban
on nuptials for gays and lesbians was
unconstitutional.
We saw what happened when a
court usurps the obvious will of the
people, Vander Plaats said. What
happened there is the people of Iowa
listened and they responded and they
responded with the historic ouster of all
the judges in the 2010 election.
Bishop Harry Jackson of Hope
Christian Church of Beltsville, Md.,
claimed marriage between a man and
woman reduces poverty and rates of
youth incarceration, domestic violence
and sexual abuse.
When a man and a woman are in the
house, there is health, there is healing,
there is peace, there is joy, theres
security, he said. There is the rule and
reign of God in the house. One man,
one woman is Gods architectural plan
so the desert places of urban America
will bloom and blossom like a rose.
An ABC News/Washington Post poll
released last week shows 58 percent of
Americans support marriage rights for
same-sex couples. The survey further
indicates 52 percent of Republican and
GOP-leaning independents between 18-
49 back nuptials for gays and lesbians.
Brown and other same-sex marriage
opponents sought to discredit polls
that continue to show a majority of
Americans now support the issue.

Ravens star reiterates
this is a civil rights issue
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendon
Ayanbadejo on Monday said he was
excited to speak in support of
marriage rights for same-sex couples
outside the U.S. Supreme Court on
Tuesday. (See related story on page 14.)
Ive gone out to the polls and
passed out iers and done stuff like
that, but Ive never spoken in front of a
courthouse or in any type of rally ever
before, he told the Washington Blade
during an extended interview. This is
sort of uncharted territory for me. Im
kind of the most unlikely of people to
do so where everyone else will be some
sort of activist or is some way involved
in politics. Im just a concerned citizen.
Ayanbadejo, who spoke alongside
D.C. Congressional Del. Eleanor
Holmes Norton and others outside
the Supreme Court before the justices
hear oral arguments in a case that
challenges Californias Proposition 8,
in 2009 became the rst professional
athlete to endorse marriage rights for
same-sex couples. He also became one
of the most public faces of last years
campaign in support of the referendum
on Marylands same-sex marriage law.
State Del. Emmett Burns (D-Baltimore
County) told team owner Steve Bisciotti
that Ayanbadejo should concentrate on
football and steer clear of dividing the fan
base last August after he donated two
Ravens tickets as part of a Marylanders
for Marriage Equality fundraiser.
The Ravens and Chris Kluwe of the
Minnesota Vikings are among those
who defended Ayanbadejo. A Maryland
legislative committee last month
concluded Burns violated the General
Assemblys ethics rules when he wrote
to Bisciotti on ofcial stationary.
Im pretty proud to pay taxes and
be in Maryland and be in a state thats
paving the way thats really trailblazing
and changing peoples minds and
opinions and attitudes toward LGBT
equality, Ayanbadejo said.
Ayanbadejo, whose father is Nigerian
and mother is of Irish descent, added
he feels highlighting the fact his parents
and other interracial couples could not
legally marry in some states before the
Supreme Court in 1967 struck down such
bans in its landmark Loving v. Virginia
decision is an effective argument within
the current debate.
In Loving v. Virginia we were ghting
for interracial marriage and now were
ghting for LGBT marriage or same-sex
marriage, he said. The overlying issue
is government trying to dictate who we
should love and the Constitution clearly
that states everyone is created equal
and has equal protections under the
law, but clearly they dont.
Ayanbadejo conceded he has received
some criticism over this comparison, but
not from communities of color.
This is a civil rights issue; this is a human
rights issue, he said. Theres been much
opposition to that, but I still rmly believe
in my stance that it is an equal rights issue.
People are entitled to their opinions, but
its the fact of the matter that people are
not treated equally and thats something
you cant argue about. Equality is not
somebodys opinion. Its your right as an
American citizen.
Ayanbadejo, who led a brief in
support of marriage rights for same-sex
couples with the Supreme Court in the
Prop 8 case with Kluwe, is working with
Athlete Ally to ght homophobia and
transphobia in sports.

Calif.s lieutenant guv
speaks out on Prop 8,
Barney Frank and more
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
California Lt. Gov. and former San
Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom says a
decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to
uphold Proposition 8s ban on same-sex
marriage would prompt the California
Legislature to place a pro-marriage
equality referendum on the ballot in 2014.
In an exclusive interview with the
Washington Blade on Tuesday, after
attending the Supreme Courts oral
arguments on the Prop 8 case, Newsom
said he is condent the court will strike
down Prop 8. He said hes hopeful but
less condent that the high court will
issue a broader decision legalizing
same-sex marriage in all 50 states.
But Newsom predicted that a worst
case scenario ruling upholding Prop 8
would trigger an immediate backlash in
the LGBT community in California and
among the states pro-marriage equality
lawmakers. This would lead to placing a
Prop 8 repeal measure on the ballot, most
likely in the 2014 election cycle, he said.
I dont know if I want to use the word
shock because thats a little hyperbolic,
he said in describing the reaction to
a decision leaving Prop 8 in place.
But that backlash would immediately
precipitate a ballot measure that most
likely in this casethe legislature would
put that on the ballot, he said.
It would require two-thirds of the
legislature. There is two-thirds of the
legislature now that supports marriage
equality, he said.
So you wouldnt even have to get
the signatures, Newsom added. And
I think that would immediately happen.
And we would put on a campaign to
end all campaigns. And we would win
quite handily in 2014.
Newsom told the Blade he has no
regrets over his highly controversial
decision in 2004 to use his authority as
San Francisco mayor to direct the city
to begin issuing marriage licenses to
same-sex couples before any court or
state governmental body gave the go-
ahead for such marriages.
In February 2004 Newsom himself
performed the rst of the city-authorized
same-sex nuptials in a City Hall ceremony
that drew national and international press
coverage. The couple joined in marriage
in that ceremony was longtime lesbian
activists Phyllis Lion and Del Martin, who
were in their 80s.
[T]hat one couple, Phyllis Lyon and
Del Martin, became 4,036 additional
couples from 46 states, Newsom said,
noting that other same-sex couples
came to San Francisco from eight
countries to get married.
Less than a year later, however, gay
marriage opponents succeeded in
obtaining a court ruling barring Newsom
and San Francisco authorities from
performing same-sex marriages. The
ruling also declared all of the same-sex
marriages performed by the city as invalid.
Critics of Newsoms decision to
authorize the marriages, including then-
U.S. Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), whos
gay, blamed Newsom for playing into
the hands of anti-gay groups seeking
to ban same-sex marriage through state
constitutional amendments.
Close to a dozen such amendments
passed through ballot measures
that year, and some political pundits
said the ballot measures helped
Republican George W. Bush win the
2004 presidential election by drawing
conservative voters to the polls in larger
than usual numbers.
Newsom and LGBT activists who
supported his decision to authorize the San
Francisco marriages say the action boosted
efforts to challenge Californias ban on
same-sex marriage in the state courts. In
early 2008, the California Supreme Court
ruled that same-sex couples have a right
to marry under the states constitution,
opening the way for same-sex couples to
marry throughout the state.

GLCCB names new director
The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Community Center of Baltimore
and Maryland (GLCCB) announced the appointment of Matthew Thorn to
the role of interim executive director last week. According to a press release
issued March 20, with this appointment the GLCCBs board of directors is
moving to reafrm the role that the GLCCB plays in the LGBT community.
The Board of Directors of the GLCCB feels strongly that Matt Thorns
skills and experience will be a real benet to the organization as its interim
executive director, said board president Mike McCarthy. While we are sad
to lose him as a board member, we are thrilled that he has stepped up to the
challenge of guiding the GLCCB through what promises to be an exciting
period. Matts devotion to the GLCCB and the greater commitment that he
is showing by becoming interim executive director are going to be critical
factors in the success of the GLCCB.
Thorn has been involved with fundraising and nonprot management. For
nearly the last decade hes worked to assist the homeless, the arts, education,
the developmentally disabled and LGBT issues. He started his fundraising
work with numerous local, state and federal candidates raising funds for their
election campaigns through online and social media. The GLCCBs Gary
Wolnitzek, who has been serving in a director capacity after the departure of
former Executive Director Craig Wiley, will retake his role as program director.
Thorn has most recently been a consultant and previously served as
director of development at Equality Maryland. He resigned from that post
when Equality Marylands former executive director Morgan Meneses-Sheets
was removed by the board two years ago.
He also served as one of the national co-chairs for the National Conference
on LGBT Equality: Creating Change. Thorn currently serves as a member of
the Victory Fund Campaign Board and president of the steering committee
for PFLAG-Howard County. Thorn is a graduate of The Catholic University
of America in Washington, where he earned his bachelors degree in
International Relations.
I am looking forward to strengthening the Center and bringing its
programs, services and outreach into the 21st century, said Thorn. We aim
to address the epidemic rate of homeless LGBT youth, build on programming
for LGBT elders and work toward transgender non-discrimination, education
and upholding the laws that are currently in effect.
Equality Maryland schedules potluck
In an email to donors, Equality Maryland announced it is holding a
celebration potluck dinner on Wednesday. The notice, signed by Equality
Maryland eld organizer Owen Smith, stated: We know this might sound a
bit odd, but even though SB 449 didnt make it through committee, were
throwing a party. Why? Because together with you, our community and
concerned people all over Maryland we created a historic precedent. We
worked together to form an empowered community that stands together.
The Senates Judicial Proceedings Committee on March 14 voted 5-6 to kill
SB 449, The Fairness for All Marylanders Act of 2013. The bill, had it passed,
would have provided statewide anti-discrimination protections on the basis
of gender identity and expression in housing, employment and public
accommodations. Equality Maryland, along with other state groups, worked
to get the measure passed.
The potluck will take place at the GLCCB, 241 West Chase St. in Baltimore
from 6:30-9:30 p.m.
MFA community arts exhibit
There will be a reception on April 5 to launch the 2013 MFA in Community
Arts Thesis Exhibition at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA).
This exhibition, which will be on view through April 14, showcases 10
community artists. MFA candidates develop their own creative voice as they
simultaneously investigate the relationship of art to community building
throughout Baltimore.
The reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. at the MICA Graduate Student
Center, D Center, 16 W. North Ave. in Baltimore. For more information, call

Pediatrics group supports gay marriage
NEW YORK The American Academy of Pediatrics came out in support of
same-sex marriage last week stating that allowing gay and lesbian parents to
marry if they choose is in the best interests of their children, the New York Times
and other media outlets reported.
The academys new policy statement says marriage helps guarantee rights,
benets and long-term security for children. Academy staff began reviewing
scientic literature about four years ago to write its 10-page report backed by 60
citations, the Times reported.
One doctor, Ellen Perrin, who co-authored the policy paper, cited studies with
different design and samples that had similar results. Others, such as professors at
Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, said the policy from the academy was
premature and that theres not enough national data to support the new policy.

British health group offers S&M course
LONDON A British gay mens health non-prot has announced its offering an
unexpected class a six-week series on bondage and S&M, Pink News, a British gay

Londons Gay Mens Health Charity says the course will cover four sessions on bondage
and two on S&M. Its designed to be a fun and enjoyable hands on experience that will
give you information, practical skills and techniques as well as useful tips about bondage
and S&M equipment, safety, communications skills and sexual health.
The course starts April 13 and costs 60 pounds (about $91). It will cover gags, rope,
mummication, pain, wax, humiliation, watersports and more, the Pink News article said.
Columbia Univ. launches LGBT initiative
NEW YORK Columbia Universitys psychiatry department is hoping to develop
better health coverage for LGBT people through a new research program, the Columbia
Spectator, the schools newspaper, reported Monday.
Launched last month, the initiative aims to produce policy-relevant research, develop
medical and mental-health services and promote outreach in local communities on gay
health, the paper said.
The idea for the initiative came after an Institute of Medicine report, funded by the
National Institutes of Health, found that researchers still have a lot to learn about the
diversity of LGBT populations.
Faculty in the department said they hope eventually to build a full LGBT research
institute at the university.
Activists urge labor unions to support trans health
MANKATO, Minn. Labor unions and LGBT activists in Minnesota are pushing for a
trans-inclusive health care report as part of the rst-ever Transgender Month of Action,
the Minnesota Daily reported Monday.
Activists are pushing for health care access for transgender people that will include
coverage of hormone treatments and gender-reassignment surgery, said Gabriel
Haaland, vice president of Pride at Work, the Daily said.
Pride at Work and other groups are educating union members nationwide, asking
them to pledge to bargain for transgender health care through contract negotiations,
the article said.
Labor unions have historically fought for LGBT issues like domestic partnership

Philly college offers certicate in LGBT health
PHILADELPHIA The Drexel University School of Public Health has started what is
believed to be only the second program in the country to offer a certicate in LGBT
health, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported last week.
The University of Pittsburgh, in 2007, started the rst, the report said. Its the same
program being taught at Drexel, a private research university in downtown Philadelphia.
The certicate is available only to online students but should be expanded soon.
Faculty said medical schools typically teach very little on LGBT health issues, the
article said.

Rules for a more efcient
cardio workout
Despite our recent battles with the
snow gods, it seems as if winter is on its
way out. With the weather warming up,
Im seeing lots more people lacing up
those pumps and catching the run bug.
Cardio, oh how we love thee! Well, at
least some of us do.
Like many of you, I grew up playing
sports and grew a certain afnity for only
running when there were balls to be
chased. Obviously this has continued
on and off the eld but thats a story for
another day. At any rate, since leisurely
runs, mountain biking, swimming and
other bouts of cardio were never my
forte I learned the most efcient ways to
satisfy that cardio x, in the quickest and
most painless way possible.
Timing matters. Whoever told you
that you can do your cardio anytime
of day and get the same results is just
wrong, wrong, wrong. When it comes to
cardio the early bird gets the worm. If
you are really looking for maximum fat
burning do your cardio rst thing in the
morning before breakfast. I know we
have been preaching breakfast for years
but listen for a second. When you do
cardio in a depleted state, which means
no food intake for 8-10 hours, the body
is forced to pull from more fat stores as
a primary energy source.
With no carbohydrates or proteins
immediately available, the body
switches to our most efcient, yet
annoying energy source, fat. That means
with a morning depleted session of the
same cardio output as your normal
cardio rounds, you may burn up to twice
as much fat calories as you would on a
full stomach. So remember to get that
run in before you run to that fridge.
Intensity matters, too. In the game
of cardio strength and fat burning,
intensity is king. If you really want that
shredded look you have to go hard or
go home. Add in high intensity interval
training (HIIT) where you sprint to get
your heart rate up and then allow short
rest times of recovery. If you arent sure
if you are going hard enough, heres my
simple rule: If you can talk during your
workout you need to turn it up. The high
intensity portion should leave you with
only one priority, breathing. This type of
training is the basis for all of my weight
loss and weight maintenance clients
workouts because it yields big results
in a short amount of time. The key is
that these workouts keep you burning
calories throughout the entire day.
HIIT training raises your metabolism
and forces your body to burn more
calories while shifting into massive
recovery mode. This spring, ditch that
45-minute slow jog around Dupont and
trade it for 20, 45-second sprints. Your
abs will thank you.
With warmer temps, runners are headed back outside.

Its important for patients to
come out to their doctors
Coming out is an important part of
who we are. Its sometimes difcult
to disclose our sexual orientation or
gender identity to our family, friends,
employers and co-workers.
But, trying as it may be, theres at least
one more person you need to add to
that list: your health care provider.
Some people ask why they need to
disclose that to their doctor. For one
very simple reason: so he or she can
give you the best health care possible.
Health care providers (doctors,
physician assistants, nurse practitioners,
mental health professionals, dentists)
need every bit of information they can
get to provide you with the health care
you need. Knowing that you are LGBT
ensures they can treat all of you.
For example, if you tell your doctor
that you are transgender, they can work
with you to develop a plan to transition
in a way that is healthy and medically
appropriate.
If you are a lesbian or bisexual
woman, they will know that you may
be more likely to smoke and perform
appropriate assistance in quitting.
Gay and bisexual men who are
sexually active should be offered
vaccinations against Hepatitis A and B,
and, possibly, the Human Papillomavirus
(HPV) vaccine.
But, unless you tell your provider
about your sexual orientation or gender
identity, they wont know to do any of
this. And, unfortunately, many providers
simply assume that their patients are
heterosexual or identify as the gender
they were assigned at birth. And many
dont think to ask their patients because
some doctors do not know enough
about LGBT health care concerns
Providing high quality and afrming
care for the LGBT community was
Whitman-Walkers founding principle
back in 1978. Back then, our services
were limited to screening and treatment
of sexually transmitted infections and
treatment for mental health issues
and substance abuse. Today, we are a
leader in LGBT health care in the D.C.
metropolitan area.
While you may be more familiar with
our HIV services, we also provide a full
range of health care services for patients
who do not have HIV: primary medical
care, mental health services, dental care
and legal help. And our providers are
not only well-trained in LGBT health
care, they are highly experienced in
delivering quality care.
But our community should not
have to rely on one health center to
receive the high quality care it needs.
That care should be available in any
community health center, any hospital,
any academic medical center and any
private practice in the nation.
As with all civil rights ghts, real
progress is only made through action.
So, at your next doctors appointment,
tell them about your sexual orientation
or gender identity if you havent already.
If they react negatively, then nd another
provider. If they react positively, then talk
about how that information can improve
the quality of your health care.
In the end, you deserve and should
expect high-quality, afrming health
care. You need to be open and honest
with your medical providers. Remember,
your good health is in your hands.

OF THE YEAR
MINUTES FROM ROCKVILLE,
New lethal bacterial
meningitis cases seen in NYC
Last year, a good friend who lives in
New York City asked me if I recalled he
had wanted to introduce me to a certain
bartender. Of course I remember, I
replied. Then the shocker, reminiscent
of AIDS in the early 80s: My friend
told me he suddenly died, but from
meningitis. Kyle was only 32 years
old. Then another shocker: My friend
said bacterial meningitis is transmitted
through kissing.
Meningitis, the Centers for Disease
Control reports, can spread through
the exchange of respiratory and throat
secretions. Thats kissing. People make
the mistake that the most common
symptoms of meningitis (neck pain,
high fever, and a rash) is the u.
Let me share with you what The
New York Times says about the NYC
meningitis outbreak: It is a variant of
a disease that can go from a fever and
headache to a galloping rash and then
to death within hours so quickly that
some victims have been found dead in
bed before they could even get to a
doctor. In addition, many men who are
at risk may not identify themselves as
either gay or bisexual, even though they
are having sex with other men, health
ofcials said. So it is hard to reach out to
them through gay organizations, and it
is hard to get them to come forward to
be vaccinated.
Since 2010, 22 men in New York City
have become infected with the disease,
and seven died. More than half, 12
of the 22, were living with HIV. Theres
a distinct possibility meningitis could
develop into a major outbreak, NYC
health ofcials warn, killing many more.
So far this year, four men already are
infected with meningitis. New York Citys
health department is recommending
vaccinations for men, regardless of
HIV status, who regularly have intimate
contact with other men. In December,
San Francisco Health ofcials went as
far as to recommend that gay men
traveling to NYC get vaccinated.
Dr. Jay Varma, deputy commissioner
for disease control at New York Citys
health department, told The New York
Times, Its been sort of marching
through the community in a way that
makes us very scared.
I contacted the D.C. Department
of Health and received the following
statement from Dr. Saul Levin, Interim
Director: The District of Columbia
Department of Health closely monitors
meningitis cases in the District. While
we have not seen an increase from
meningitis, as a public health ofcial
and physician, I strongly recommend
people living with HIV or those that
travel to the New York area frequently
consult with their physician regarding a
meningitis vaccination. If you develop
a headache, fever or a stiff neck please
seeks medical attention immediately.
Back in the early 80s before the
Internet, health ofcials would rely on
iers, many posted in bars and clubs
and mens bathrooms, to inform the gay
community about AIDS. But today its
the Internet that people depend on to
meet others.
Every gay or straight social dating
website and app should assume some
responsibility for the health of their
customers. The social media outlets
could reach thousands at little or no cost
and great efciency. They could start by
posting instant pop-up Health Alerts
and provide easy access links where
they can nd further health information.
This would help save lives.
Beware the deadly kiss

Now we must come out
of the peace closet,
oppose drones and war
Due to a recent medical connement,
with its concomitant desire for an out-of-
body experience while the body healed,
my galpal and I learned the pleasures of
binge TV. The Wire, Downton Ab-
bey and Homeland. We followed
Tammy Taylor from Friday Night Lights
to Nashville. We hate-watched a quar-
ter season of Game of Thrones. With
recovery, we have gone our separate
watching ways: she to Sons of Anarchy
because football season is over, me to
Revenge, so Ill never actually have to
go to the Hamptons.
I hope psychologists somewhere are
studying the aberrations of the serial
mind. When we were on The Wire, I
noticed myself talking to my galpal like
Omar, You feel me? During Down-
ton, I became quite resentful that I had
to dress and feed myself. The Emily/
Amanda pleasures and perils of Re-
venge made me a meaner UNO player.
But then came the 10th anniversary
of the pre-emptive Shock and Awe
invasion of Iraq and the beginning of
the end for thousands of Iraqi civil-
ians, American soldiers, Saddam Hus-
sein, electricity, water, trees, birds, truth,
hope and on and on. I have never felt so
seethingly vengeful.
For as sectarian violence continues to
wrack Iraq and our soldiers come home
crippled by war to an overwhelmed, un-
responsive Bureau of Veterans Affairs,
George Bush is narcissistically painting
nude pictures of himself, living in assisted
living in Dallas, and riding his bike. The
shovel-ready Dick Cheney, whose health-
care we all envy, is unrepentant and no
doubt happy that his Halliburton made
$39.5 billion on the Iraq war. Don Rumsfeld
is enjoying crab cakes by the Chesapeake
Bay. Like Emily/Amanda I feel I should
dedicate myself to bringing George Bush
and his craven cohort to justice.
From his rst term, President Obama
said that he did not want to look back-
ward, only forward. Granted, his ad-
ministration was busy with a scal crisis
caused by nancialized mortgage she-
nanigans, decreased tax revenue and an
off-the-books war. But looking forward
leaves unexamined and uninvestigated
a bogus war, lies, torture, rendition and
corruption. Such willful amnesia leads to
moral drift, targeted assassinations and
the normalization of drones.
But revenge is so Old Testament.
Even Emily/Amanda has learned its pit-
falls. Revenge brings more of the same
or worse. Ten years ago Bush II was
avenging his fathers wimpy retreat in
the rst Iraq war. I wish father and son
had just gone to family therapy.
Mind you I am nowhere near forgive-
ness. Instead of putting Bush, Cheney,
Rumsfeld etc. in orange onesies in lock-
down, now I think they should be forced to
watch, for the rest of their born days, a con-
tinuous loop of Rachel Maddows excellent
special, Hubris, about the lead-up to the
war. Its Sons of Anarchy, the reality show.
In these heady, incredible days of shift-
ing public attitudes toward LGBT rights and
perhaps positive Supreme Court rulings, we
LGBTs cannot forget what we learned. After
years of being denied then dismissed, our
progress toward equality, came not through
revenge but through activism. Simply put,
we came out of the closet.
Stopping the next iteration of the war
machine can come only when we come
out of the peace closet and speak out
against bullying drones, omnipresent
surveillance, and the weaponization of
equality. Otherwise, its an endless loop
of Game of Thrones.

munity opposition they would generate, its
likely they now comprehend that their ac-
tions have energized and united hundreds
calling for fundamental changes in city per-
mitting protocols for popular local dining
and socializing amenities.
For the rst time and amid one of the
Districts largest assemblages of vibrant
commerce, residents have joined in large
numbers to battle imposition of a liquor li-
cense moratorium. Five restricted licensing
areas exist elsewhere, most for more than a
decade with negative economic develop-
ment impact, and not a single one has yet
been terminated.
A total liquor license moratorium pro-
posed by the tiny group of longtime hos-
pitality business objectors for a nuclear-
bomb-blast-sized zone encompassing
multiple MidCity neighborhoods appears
unlikely to be approved by either the D.C.
Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Board
or the D.C. Council. The regulatory request
would prohibit the opening of any new res-
taurants or bars and restrict expansion or
other changes at existing establishments
for at least ve years.
An outpouring of community oppo-
sition among residents of Logan Circle,
Shaw, and the 14th and U streets areas to
a regulatory petition led in December by
a controversial citizens association appears
to have stunned those requesting the ban.
Negative advisory recommendations to the
ABC Board by all four affected Advisory
Neighborhood Commission (ANC) groups
are also anticipated. The Shaw ANC already
voted on Feb. 6 to urge rejection.
However, the real worry for the renegade
cadre of business licensing opponents has
undoubtedly expanded beyond merely de-
feat on the moratorium proposal.
Entrepreneurs seeking to open a res-
taurant or bar are quick to discover the
obstacles in navigating unduly cumber-
some licensing procedures affecting the
citys largest private sector industry. Thats
the lesson learned by neighborhood resi-
dent Rose Previte while seeking a liquor
license for an aptly named Compass Rose
tavern adjacent to the corner of 14th and
T streets. She now understands why local
business owners had forewarned her that
the regulatory experience would be pro-
tracted, extremely expensive for a small
business enterprise and, perhaps worst of
all, soul sucking.
Prevites small eatery and low-key bar
to feature global street foods in a comfort-
able neighborhood-scale environment is
planned for a commercial property that un-
til September was an alcohol-licensed caf,
situated next to the landmark Caf Saint-Ex
and across the street from recently opened
Matchbox restaurant.
The dynamic young businesswoman,
with Capitol Hills The Pour House tavern
co-owner Mike Schuster partnering as an
investor, has encountered license protests
by both an ad hoc Gang of 5 or more and
the citizens group behind the proposed
moratorium. Yet the more numerous sup-
portive neighbors surrounding the busi-
ness-to-be below the residence of Previte
and her husband and NPR Morning Edi-
tion host David Greene, are excluded from
standard licensing review procedures.
Until the D.C. Council acts to eliminate
the special legal standing of self-des-
ignated license protest groups to directly
intervene, unrepresentative and unreason-
able obstructionists will continue to plague
the citys business environment. While the
Council imposed some restrictions on li-
cense protests late last year, it is clear that
those measures are insufcient to ensure
regulatory fairness.
Further reforms allowing all residents to
weigh in utilizing the open forum provided
by elected ANC members are needed.
A remedy allowing all voices to be heard
within the existing framework of ANC op-
portunity to offer the ABC Board an advi-
sory opinion on licensing applications is the
commonsense solution.
MidCity neighborhoods are the lat-
est to demonstrate that resident tol-
erance for the shenanigans of license
protest groups has expired. Failure by
D.C. Council members and the mayor
to enact regulatory reforms in response
to this development will only imperil
their own community standing as well.
DOMA appears doomed;
Prop 8 a trickier prediction
The Supreme Court has the briefs in
Hollingsworth v. Perry (the Prop. 8 case)
and United States v. Windsor (the De-
fense of Marriage Act case). The rallies
are over; the oral arguments have been
heard. The slew of amicus briefs led
have been read, including one signed by
172 members of the 435-member House
of Representatives nearly 40 percent
maintaining that DOMA unconstitu-
tionally deprives same-sex couples of the
right to be treated equally.
Justices heard about the rst Repub-
lican senator, Rob Portman (R-Ohio) who
came out for same-sex marriage based
on his son being gay. Hillary Clinton has
spoken out for same-sex marriage join-
ing former President Bill Clinton who
now recognizes that DOMA, a bill he
signed, is unconstitutional. President
Jimmy Carter came out for marriage
equality along with hundreds of Ameri-
cas leading businesses from Walt Disney
to Goldman Sachs. President Obamas
Justice Department weighed in strongly
on both cases saying any prohibition
on same-sex marriage, or the federal
governments ability to recognize legal
same-sex marriages, is unconstitutional.
Now we wait for six men and three wom-
en to determine whether lesbian and gay
individuals can live our lives to our full po-
tential; publicly declare our love; and share
in the benets and obligations of civil mar-
riage. History would suggest that like last
year where the fate of the Affordable Care
Act (Obamacare) was decided, we wont
hear the justices decision until the last day
of the court term.
While speculation runs rampant about
who the swing justice or justices will be,
I suggest we remember Obamacare and
prepare to be surprised. Many agree the
political ght over same-sex marriage is
all but over. By increasing numbers, Amer-
icans support same-sex marriage. They
see more friends and relatives come out
and have concluded that their loved ones
deserve the same rights they have. It was
a noteworthy sign of the times that Chief
Justice John Roberts lesbian niece Jean
Podrasky sat and listened to her cousin
ask questions from the bench related to
how she can live her life.
In the Prop 8 case there was interesting
discussion around the options. In the rst
30 seconds, Roberts asked the proponents
of Prop 8 to address whether they have
standing to bring the case. Justice Ken-
nedy commented that the court may have
acted too quickly in taking the case. But
in the discussion over whether anyone is
harmed by same-sex marriage, Kennedy
said if same-sex marriage were not al-
lowed it would be the 40,000 children liv-
ing with same-sex parents who would be
harmed. Justice Kagan, to some laughter,
addressed the issue of the claim that mar-
riage is for procreation only by suggest-
ing that in that case couples where both
husband and wife are over 55 couldnt be
married. That led to a rather humorous
back and forth on fertility. It appears that
the court may look at the amicus brief sub-
mitted by former acting Solicitor General
Walter Dellinger and rule that the parties
bringing the case had no standing. That
would lead to same-sex marriage being
legal in California but have no impact on
other states. They could also declare that
prohibiting same-sex marriage is unconsti-
tutional and throw out laws in the 32 states
that now prohibit it. Judging by the ques-
tions asked and the comments made that
result now looks unlikely.
Though not a lawyer, my prediction is
that DOMA will be overturned by a vote of
6 to 3 with both Roberts and Kennedy sid-
ing with the majority. The court will punt with
regard to Proposition 8 and go with states
rights ruling 5 to 4 that in essence same-sex
marriage is legal in California but not apply
the ruling to any other state.
I pray for more. My hope is that the Su-
preme Court will side with the arc of history.
But with or without them we will move for-
ward and win in the long run. If the court
doesnt stand for full equality now the
battles will continue state by state. Then
despite how quickly momentum is moving
toward equality it will still take time for same-
sex marriage to be a universal right.
And the wait for a decision begins.

Its been more than a year since the na-
tional uproar ignited by CNNs Roland Mar-
tin my rst cousin over those infamous
Super Bowl tweets perceived by some as in-
sensitive and allegedly promoting violence
against gay men.
(During the 2012 Super Bowl, Martin
sent several tweets, including, If a dude at
your Super Bowl party is hyped about David
Beckhams H&M underwear ad, smack the
ish out of him!)
The tweets caused the Gay & Lesbian
Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) to
pounce on Martin like Broadway cats on a
hood dog, and it left me thinking, Wow
what a difference a tweet makes.
When the news broke that GLAAD
called for the ring of Roland from CNN and
demanded an apology, as a gay relative,
I asked myself if I should speak out about
this and then wondered if anyone would lis-
ten. It took me about a day or so to decide
to share my initial opinion with a few close
friends. Admittedly some of my thoughts
were emotional reactions in my social me-
dia arena, which were probably perceived
as leaning in Rolands defense. Back then I
wasnt sure on which side of this social and
political madness I really stood.
However, in response to a recent Wash-
ington Watch video from RolandMartinRe-
ports.com, I am clear about where I stand
now and I believe (as a black woman and
an advocate for equality for all people and
openly LGBTQ), that black people gay or
straight have no business speaking out
against their white counterparts until the
collective steps up and truly takes care of
their own in ALL human rights agendas.
We have the worst history of shunning
and ostracizing our own people. I rmly be-
lieve the real problem is a racial issue within
the black community for not taking full re-
sponsibility for this cause.
Advocating for human rights from a
global perspective is extremely important
and changing the culture of discrimination
and violence against the black LGBT com-
munity within my own race, within our own
families is critical and concerns me the most.
I have been known to support Rolands
political views, but obviously, I am not his
typical demographic and I seldom follow
his off-color twitter updates.
I will never discount the fact that words
can be harmful, I just think we make way
too much about what some people say and
tweet and end up bringing more attention
to that which may otherwise go unnoticed.
Ironically, Rolands twitter following has
doubled since those infamous Super Bowl
tweets that GLAAD apparently thought
were going to start a gay bashing epidemic.
In a Washington Watch segment on
TVOne, entitled, Perspective: At The Table
Of Brotherhood, Discussing Differences
And Gaining Understanding, Roland said,
Now, if youre gay or straight, your voice
matters. Well, I agree, my voice does mat-
ter and I would like to hear from more voices
that genuinely and actively advocate for me
and my sisters and brothers in the entire
LGBT community.
If Roland really wants to gain an under-
standing and help stop violence against
gays, he should work more on eradicating
homophobia at home before doing a show
that appears to demonize GLAAD and oth-
ers as racist. Really get at the grassroots
level in black communities and encourage
each he encounters to rst understand and
accept their own family members, then
perhaps collectively we will all have a differ-
ent perspective and understanding of the
LGBT community.
Initially, during the tweet scandal, I
was a bit harsh on GLAAD, accusing them
of being overly sensitive as did many. In
the past, Ive also quietly questioned what,
if anything, GLAAD has done for the black
LGBT community. In hindsight, I realize
GLAAD may have its problems, but so do
most black organizations advocating for any
community related issue. So who are we to
judge GLAAD?
Whos really to blame here? And whos
really responsible for changing it? I believe
since we continue to judge each other, we
are all at fault and responsible for changing
it. Surely, its going to take a whole lot more
than surface conversations on a TV talk show
to break this perpetual cycle of mistreating
those we are called to love. And until then, it
is and will always remain just talk.

New W.Va. gay club hopes
to succeed where others
nearby have failed
By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO
joeyd@washblade.com
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. Gay-
popular entertainment districts
are almost always found in major
metropolitan areas, but theres a
smattering of clubs and restaurants
in the close-by regions of Marylands
Cumberland Valley and West Virginias
Eastern Panhandle that are drawing
decent-sized crowds despite being
more than an hour from either
Washington or Baltimore.
For decades, The Lodge in
Boonsboro, Md., (thelodgemd.com)
has been pretty much the only gay
nightclub in the region. Formerly known
as Deer Park Lodge and at times closed
altogether, its been thriving again
under new management since 2011
when partners Ryan Dryden and Joe
Velazquez moved from Washington to
reopen and run it.
Since January, its faced some
competition as The Club (theclubwv.
com), a new gay bar/club in Martinsburg,
W.Va.s Spring Mills area (about 21 miles
from The Lodge), took over a large
spot formerly known as straight bars
Ambitions and before that, Gatsbys.
Owner Coby Myers, a gay sheriff in
West Virginia, has his gay friends Jarvis
Jerry Brooks and Dale Gish running the
operation. They say, so far, business has
been good and that theyre carving out
a niche for themselves in the region
by offering strong customer service, a
family-type atmosphere and a clean
and newly remodeled space. Its about
80 miles from Dupont Circle.
A lot of people feel its just easier
to get instant gratication now on the
Internet, says Brooks, who DJs at The
Club in addition to booking talent and
planning events. I think my thing is
just that a lot of clubs have forgotten
the whole aspect of a family feel, where
everybody knows your name and theres
a home bar feel to it. Youre not just a
number, youre not just a door cover,
theres more to it than that.
But can it last? Are there enough
LGBT residents in these parts of
Maryland and West Virginia to support
two gay clubs? A few others have come
and gone in recent years. The Mariner
Club, locals say, had a decent run for a
few years on Martinsburgs Winchester
Ave. It was across the street from Sugar
Daddys, a male strip club that, although
not technically gay, had gay strippers
and more gay male patrons than straight
women. But both are now closed.
And more recently Spin/Club
Underground, which was in downtown
Hagerstown just a few doors down from
the historic Maryland Theatre, died a
relatively quick death after being open
less than a year. Brooks, who DJed at
the gay venue, says business was hit
and miss.
Those involved say they see a
brighter future for The Club.
For one thing, its not mismanaged,
says Ray Stagner, a drag queen who
performs as Cheyenne and who
debuted at The Club last Saturday night.
Wearing full drag makeup but
dressed in a ball cap, jeans and guys
T-shirt while pufng on a cigarette in
The Clubs downstairs smoking-allowed
pool room, Stagner, a Hagerstown
resident, says gays and drag performers
in the region will support both The Club
and The Lodge. Because of liquor laws,
The Club can stay open an hour later
(until 3 a.m.) on Saturday nights whereas
the Lodge closes at 2.
I think its great, Stagner says. If
people want to go here one night they
can, or they may do like we used to do
in the old days. As soon as they called
last call at Deer Park, we used to bail
from Hagerstown and come down here
to Gatsbys once they closed the bars in
Hagerstown.
Last Saturday night at about 10 p.m.,
The Club had a healthy crowd though it
wasnt packed. The space is mammoth
theres a large dance area, stage, bar,
tables, seating area, downstairs pool room,
kitchen and a huge outdoor patio and bar
Brooks says they cant wait to use once
the weather gets warmer.
It reminds me of the old Tracks
in D.C., he says. Theres so much
potential for this space.
All the interiors have been
redecorated since it was Ambitions. The
hardwood dance oor, Brooks says, is
the one original component it dates
to the 1950s.
A diverse crowd mills about including
20- and 30-ish gay guys, a few older gay
men, a few lesbians and a drag queen
or two. A few dance, but not many. Its
still early. Several make trips up and
down the half-ight of stairs to take
smoke breaks. The pool room is less
opulent, but the smokers dont seem
to mind. Large industrial smoke eaters

How long have you been out and
who was the hardest person to tell?
I have been out since I was 15 and
because I have always been in the
theater, I was in good company
from the start. Going to musical
theater summer camp didnt hurt.
Whos your LGBT hero?
Meryl Streep. But shes a hero to all
humans, right?

Whats Washingtons best
nightspot, past or present?
Larrys Lounge: Casual. Low key.
Strong drinks.
Describe your dream wedding.
Surrounded by my family and
friends on a beach along the Pacic.
What non-LGBT issue are
you most passionate about?
Arts funding in America!

What historical outcome
would you change?
The 14 times Meryl Streep lost the
Oscar.

Whats been the most
memorable pop culture
moment of your lifetime?
I wrote to Bob Mackie when I
was 9 years old and he sent me a
handwritten letter. That was denitely
a moment to remember.

On what do you insist?
Please and thank you.

What was your last
Facebook post or Tweet?
I posted a picture of the empty, but
awe-inspiring, Strathmore Concert
Hall. There is always something
magical about an empty theater.

If your life were a book, what would
the title be?
Meals in My Car: How to Build a
Career in the Arts
If science discovered a way
to change sexual orientation,
what would you do?
I wouldnt change a thing. We must
accept people, and ourselves, as we are.
What do you believe in
beyond the physical world?
I believe that the energy we get
back from the world is often indicative
of the energy we put into the world.
Whats your advice for
LGBT movement leaders?
I am in awe of their bravery and
their patient commitment to pursuing
equality. We are all the direct
beneciaries of their hard work and
I would rather take their advice than
give my own!

What would you walk across hot
coals for?
A juicy directing project!

What LGBT stereotype
annoys you most?
Im not easily annoyed.

Whats your favorite LGBT movie?
Does A League of their Own
count? And wouldnt it make a terric
Broadway musical? Are the stage
rights available?

Whats the most overrated social
custom?
Being politically correct.

What trophy or prize
do you most covet?
Personal fulllment is harder won
and longer lasting than any trophies
or prizes. Although, a Tony/Oscar/
Golden Globe/Drama Desk/Obie/
Olivier/BAFTA might be nice (in any
order)

What do you wish
youd known at 18?
ANYTHING!
Why Washington?
During spring break of my senior
year in college I met one of my
heroes, Molly Smith, and she asked
me to assistant direct her production
of Cabaret at Arena Stage. That
started it all and I moved to D.C.

Alan Paul says the nal scene in Shakespeares Antony and Cleopatra is
unusually well suited to alternate interpretations. And with Fire and Air,
a work he collaborated on with Bowen McCauley Dance, hes getting the
chance to try it.
Cleopatras death is like none other in Shakespeares work, he says.
She famously says, I am re and air; my other elements I give to baser life.
Now if that line doesnt deserve a dance, I dont know what does.
Paul is directing the piece, which will feature a rare performance by Lucy
Bowen McCauley. Its one of two world-premiering works slated for April
5-6 at the Kennedy Centers Terrace Theater. Details are at bmdc.org.
Paul knows Shakespeare hes associate director at the Shakespeare
Theatre Company in Washington and says he was fortunate to get a
fellowship to work with the legendary Michael Kahn.
Because of Michaels belief in me, Washington has become my artistic
home and a community Im proud to be part of.
Paul, 28, grew up in nearby Potomac, Md., and also lived in Chicago for a
time. He now lives in Logan Circle and enjoys theater, opera, piano, travel
and dinner with friends in his free time.

keep the room clean and from upstairs
its impossible to tell theres smoke in
the building.
Gish says the region is large enough
that gays are coming from Winchester,
Va.; Cumberland, Md.; even Greencastle
and Chambersburg, Pa., and that The
Club will thrive. Gays from Baltimore
or D.C. who want a change of scenery
even visit on occasion, he says.
Were seeing our weekend door
counts increase every weekend, Gish
says. I think it will only improve as the
weather warms.
There are about 12 on staff but DJs
and drag performers are independent
contractors. Brooks says theyre seeing
about 200 come through the doors
on an average Saturday night. A few
times its gotten close to 300. Its open
Wednesday through Saturday and on
weekends theres a $5 cover. Eighteen-
to-20-year-olds can get in anytime but
have to pass Breathalyzer tests when
they come and go. Gish guesses about
20 percent of the clientele might be
some variation of straight and says the
crowd, because of the smaller overall
numbers, is more integrated than in city
bars. He says straights, lesbians, bears
and twinks all party together here.
Despite rumors of bad blood between
The Club and The Lodge, the owners of
the latter say they bear no ill will.
Its really not a question of
competition, it doesnt matter how
many there are in the area, there are
more than enough [LGBT people] to
go around, Velazquez says. So far
business has stayed good for us and
been pretty good for them. Whether it
stays that way, time will tell.
He says there are even some
unexpected benets at times.
Of The Lodges drag cast, Velazquez
says he encourages them to perform at
other bars.
They get fans who will then follow
them from show to show and we have
some people who only show up for the
drag shows, so its good for them to be
out at different bars in the area, he says.
I have no problem with it. Its a free world.
If I wanted to have them sign an exclusivity
contract, I would, but we dont.
There are also a few gay-owned
restaurants in the region the
Gourmet Goat and Georgia Boys Caf
in Hagerstown, and Caf Izmir in nearby
Funkstown, Md.
The Goat, (41 North Potomac Street),
has been in its present location for
seven years and is known for its vast
array of martinis. Owners Steve Cook
and Paul Deputy live on site and run it
very much hands on, Deputy says.
Caf Izmir is owned by Nihal Mizah,
whos straight. The cafe became an
LGBT destination of sorts during the
time The Lodge was closed. Lesbian
Karla Auch helps her manage it.
Gish says he thinks its more than a
coincidence. Although these areas, he says,
will never have the large gay communities
Baltimore and Washington have, there
are LGBT people here and he says theyre
more comfortable being out and open
than they were even a decade ago.
I think theres a social change
happening, he says. And not just in the
media, but in families too and the culture
in general. Its becoming more accepted
to be gay and be open about it, or
lesbian, or bi or trans or whatever you
are. Society is becoming more accepting
and these business owners want to
pursue their dreams without feeling that
theyre going to be persecuted. I know
all these business owners and I support
them all and wish them the best.

Should zero intimacy be a
deal breaker if everything
else is good?
DEAR MICHAEL,
I appreciated your recent column
where you talked about an open
relationship not being great for a couple
where they werent having sex with each
other and were growing apart. But what
do you suggest for a couple where one
person wants to have sex and the other
doesnt? Ive been with my boyfriend
Richard for more than seven years and
he has really been shut down sexually
for the last ve. He is more than satised
with some kissing and occasionally
playing with each other while we
watch porn. Oral sex and intercourse
are totally out of the question for him.
When I have tried to press him for more,
I have gotten absolutely nowhere.
I, on the other hand, am an extremely
horny guy and this is absolutely not
satisfying for me. Ive thought about
leaving but we are very compatible in
all kinds of ways (have a house together,
a big group of friends, close to each
others families, enjoy the same things
except sex!). So I have been playing
around a lot for a while to get my needs
met. Hes made it extremely clear that
hes only interested in monogamy and
would leave me if I were unfaithful, so
Im not telling him. Im not sure I feel
good about this, but I dont want to live
without sex, and I dont want to end what
is in many ways a good relationship.
Given that my boyfriend wont really put
out, what else could I try?
MICHAEL REPLIES:
Think of your relationship as a system
in which the two of you are contributing
equally to this homeostasis. You both
wont talk about a huge problem that
you are having in your relationship and
you are both contributing to the lack of
intimacy in your relationship, because
neither of you is letting the other know
what is going on inside of you.
You may be undercutting what
you say is your goal a richer sexual
relationship with Richard by not
telling Richard how important it is for you
to have a sexual relationship with him.
As things now stand, Richard gets to
avoid the question of whether he would
rather have sex with you or be alone.
Neither one of you is pressuring him to
decide how important this relationship
is to him, just as neither one of you is
pressuring you to decide whether the
lack of sex is truly a dealbreaker issue
for you. You avoid dealing with that
question by having sex outside of your
relationship without telling Richard.
Obviously, I dont know why Richard
has shut down sexually, nor do I know
how sexual he was in the rst few
years of your relationship. People
grow less comfortable having sex with
their partners for all sorts of reasons.
Having sex with your long-term partner
can simply feel too intimate for some;
for others, its hard to feel erotic with
someone you have to pay bills and
negotiate household chores with.
Whatever the reason, Richard is not
taking himself on about his avoidance,
preferring to live a pretty sexless life (as
far as you know). You cannot, of course,
force him to work on himself, but you
can take yourself on about your own
avoidance of this issue by letting him
know how important sex is to you and
how much you would like to have a
sexual relationship with him.
In deciding whether you want to
speak to your boyfriend about your
bottom line, you would need to get
clear about what is most important
to you, just as you would be asking
Richard to get clear about what is most
important to him. Would you rather be
with Richard or would you rather have a
sex life with your partner? You may not
get to have both.
One nal thought: Given that you
have tolerated this situation for as long
as you have, that you have not pushed
Richard much on this and that you are
apparently enjoying having quite a bit
of sex with other men, is it possible
that you are ambivalent about being
sexual with Richard or about having a
monogamous relationship?

D.C. Sentinels fulll dream
of starting sports league
By KEVIN MAJOROS
Just a few days before the March
Madness NCAA Tournament kicked off
nationwide, the D.C. Sentinels cooked
up a little madness of their own.
The playoffs and championships of
the inaugural Washington D.C. Gay
Basketball League were held on March
14 at St. Albans School. Team NOMA,
sponsored by K&C Productions, claimed
the leagues rst title.
The D.C. Sentinels, whose members
have been playing pick-up games and
representing D.C. in tournaments since
1984, had long hoped to create a league
for the local LGBT sports community.
It has always been a plan of the D.C.
Sentinels to start a league, says Tim
Francis, Chair of the D.C. Sentinels. We
were just waiting for the right timing.
The right timing came about when
Jeffrey Richardson, former director
of the Mayors GLBT Affairs ofce,
arranged a meeting with the Sentinels
and Jason Wilson, associate athletics
director/facilities of George Washington
University.
The Charles E. Smith Center at the
University had two hours available
on Thursday nights and the planning
began along with Sam Williams from
the University for the League to run for
eight weeks from January to March.
The two-hour opening at the Charles
E. Smith Center meant that the League
capacity would be 80 players on 10 teams.
The League slots lled up immediately
with many players from the current D.C.
Sentinels roster of 40 joining in.
We had some great crossover from
other LGBT sports such as softball,
kickball and ag football, Francis says.
The D.C. Sentinels are members
of the National Gay Basketball
Association and the League ran ve-
on-ve basketball play under modied
rules from the national association.
Following the conclusion of the
League, the Sentinels returned to their
regular schedule of pick-up games.
Thursday and Saturday games are held
at Turkey Thicket with occasional play at
Westland Middle School.
Coming up on April 20-21, the Sentinels
will travel to Chicago for the Coady
Roundball Classic which will feature
roughly 35 LGBT basketball teams from
across the United States. The Sentinels
will be sending three squads.
On July 19-20, the Sentinels will
play host to a tournament here in
Washington. Details of the event will be
announced in the next month.
As for the League, plans are already
being made for the next season to run
this summer from June to August at
George Washington University.
No one wants to be inside on the
weekends in the summer, Francis says.
We will once again be looking for the
League to run on Thursday nights.
I was a spectator at the League
championships on March 14 at St.
Albans School. There was encouraging
cheers from teammates, players fouling
out (thats six fouls), confrontations with
referees and great action from all the
players. I was thoroughly entertained.
March Madness has nothing on them.
The D.C. Sentinels can be found at
teamdcbasketball.org. The League
can be found on Facebook under
Washington D.C. Gay Basketball League.

As we head into April with Earth Day
reminding us to be environmentally con-
scious, spring is also a popular time for
remodeling projects. Remodeling often
affords the opportunity to be environmen-
tally friendly by repurposing, recycling and
donating materials while also benetting
those less fortunate. Before throwing ma-
terials from your remodel away, consider
how and where you can donate or re-use
those materials and supplies.
Ask your remodeler if there is a plan
or policy for saving materials for re-use
or for donation rather than sending
them to a landll. While every project
is different, some materials are more
easily removed and saved than others,
and some materials are easily recycled.
Here is some more information from
several local Washington-area organi-
zations that accept used materials for
donation and re-use to benet others
and the environment.
A Wider Circle
A Wider Circle provides basic-need
items to families transitioning out of
shelters and those living without lifes
necessities. This organization furnishes
the homes of more than 1,000 children
and adults each month. If you wish to
donate furniture and other home es-
sentials that are in good condition (no
rips or stains), you can drop off items at
their Center for Community Service in
Silver Spring, Md. You can also sched-
ule a pickup in most areas throughout
greater Washington, D.C. Refer to their
website for a full list of accepted items
and their wish list of the most need-
ed items at www.awidercircle.org.
Habitat for Humanity ReStore
Habitat for Humanity is an organiza-
tion that provides safe and affordable
housing to low-income families. ReStore
is a resale business that sells new and
used building materials and home items
to the general public. All donations are
tax deductible and donated by individu-
als, local retailers, building contractors
and suppliers. Donated items are then
sold at 50-90 percent off the retail price,
with all proceeds beneting Habitat for
Humanity. ReStore accepts appliances,
furniture, cabinets, roong and ooring
materials, exercise equipment, coun-
tertops, electronics, and lighting and
plumbing xtures, among many others.
All materials and items must be in good
and working condition. Items may be
dropped off at ReStore locations during
their business hours or for larger dona-
tions, you may schedule a pickup. For
store hours and locations and for the
complete list of acceptable items you
can visit www.habitat.org/restores, or
check out these nearby Washington,
D.C. stores websites:
