FS4 Coursework (15 marks for each 500 words: one for Auteur Project; one for the

Journalism pieces)

Writing an Evaluation

The Evaluation is your chance to claw back some of the marks you may have lost in the main task of
your project (the Presentation) or your Journalism (Review or Article) by being self critical. In your
Evaluation you have the opportunity to discuss the intangible elements of what you have done. Here
you can gain marks by showing you are aware of your limitations and strengths and of the underlying
issues involved. You can also point out the challenges you have faced and say how you feel about the
difficulties you have overcome.

PREPARATION

You should not simply rely on teacher feedback to write your Evaluation. Firstly, re-read your work
and reflect on what you feel about it. Show your work to others to get some real responses. Try to
get a variety - from peers, from people of different ages, from friends, acquaintances. For journalism
(review and/or article) it is useful to get responses from people who might be your target audience.

Note down the responses you get. Try to be objective. Was it understood? Agreed with? Provoking?
Did it create a desired response? These responses will form an important part of your evaluation.

WRITING UP

Each Evaluation is 500 words long, in which you will be graded on the following:

• An understanding of the research processes involved in your task. This is especially needed for
your Auteur Project. It should also apply to your journalism pieces (i.e. difficulties of finding &
investigating publications, getting a handle on their style etc.)

• An understanding of the practical issues associated with accessing sources (esp. for the Auteur
Project) and choosing subjects (esp. for the film-based article). This could also cover the practice
of avoiding plagiarism.

• An understanding of the challenges and problems associated with (1) personal expression (esp. in
journalistic use of conventional forms - review or article - of chosen publication), and (2) adopting
mode of addressing your chosen target audience (discuss real responses here?). How successfully
do you/they feel you produced meaning(s)? (3) Also in your Auteur presentation - what were the
problems of talking to non-specialists about the details of your study?

• A reflection on how well (or otherwise) you have addressed the issues and debates of Film Study
in your main task. These might be film form, narrative, style and of course Auteurism. Have you
engaged with and/or explored these at an appropriate level?

• Self-criticism. Of your motivation? Your time management (did you hit deadlines)? Your
resourcesfulness? Your writing abilities? Your fluency & accuracy?

And don't forget to say whether you learned something - or even enjoyed it!
