Distinct Voice, My Choice.
The start of 2012 saw the selection of new council members of YALC 2012. The team bonded well during their orientation and workshop in Dhulikhel. During their stay in Dhulikhel, they were each given a t-shirt with the words distinct voice, my choice written. The Nepalese society, whether the old tradition one or the new modernized one, still has difficulties adjusting to the word sex. Its still a taboo to talk about it openly and there are a few people who has the courage to talk about it. Changing their perspective isnt the council members goal, though. We should be working alongside the Governmental Officials. One of the objectives of the council members to meet up with policymakers of the country and make them realize the importance of sex education. We are trying to introduce a comprehensive sex education curriculum, early from class 5. And to do that, we need to meet up with as many policy makers as possible. While meeting up with them, the council members have decided to wear the t-shirt of distinct voice, my choice. This is to make them realize and pressurize them to act effectively on implementing the issues. The issues that this council members are working on is distinct in the society. An important issue that everyone fails to talk about it openly. Sex is a part of life and there is no harm in talking about it openly. The council members, through their activities, are trying to change this perception of the society. This month and all year long, the council members are meeting up with many policy makers. And were hoping that our efforts will lead in achieving our goals! Kudos to the team for carrying out a lot of activities even during their busy schedule.

Infanticide of girl child...Why just them? Or, maybe why just us?
-Kriti Giri

Infanticide meaning- killing a young child. But my question is why just girls? women are at the receiving end in the Nepalese society. They are ill treated in fact being a women for myself we are ill-treated and tortured indeed. A girl child is in bondage from her very childhood. she is under constant, vigil first by ( the parents then her husband and finally her own child.. you say it that "NO THATS NOT TRUE WE R WELL TREATED BY OUR FAMILY" I question you then does your family allow u to go out for late nights??? You say that's for security reason I ask you don't parents in the western countries feel unsecured allowing their girl child for late night outing then?? or are the western countries free from crimes? You say they are broaden minded I ask u why cant we be then? Not just this we women are even condemned to death even before we are born. This is called female killing in the womb itself. There are several laws against the misuse of parental diagnostic techniques, which are meant only for detecting abnormalities in the unborn infant. The doctor however violates the law. To date, the problem is quite widespread in the whole country.. you say not in the capital city at least I say "ask your own parents for the answer.." The great tragedy is that women themselves permit the death of their daughters as merely killing. unwanted baby girls are often left on the road or in the maternity homes at night. you say poor babies who can be that cruel enough to do that, I say you, you and yes you !

Women and HIV/AIDS in Nepal

-Surendra Bohora

omen are always seen as a vulnerable and lower group in traditional societies of Nepal. Though household works are believed for women, this distinction is now on breaking process. Some women, during the path of success had adopted a sex business and some are roaming in a modernization. The real suffering of women can be felt through this deadly disaster: HIV/AIDS. In US the most common methods of HIV transmission were high-risk heterosexual contact and injection drug use. While, Nepal repre-

had 22,019 estimated HIV infected women. Though, the female population of HIV infected in Nepal is lower than male, but the reality is females are the prey of HIV; they are the sufferers of undone mistakes. Most female of age group 25

tion, especially among HIV threatened among female in Nepal 2010: Thus, we can say that turning a tide needs a support from vulnerable women. Infected women are still rejected and discriminated in the name of burden. HIV among women can be prevented from holistic approach of social, behavioral, biological intervention. However, HIV is concern of more than 100's of NGO's and governmental organizations in Nepal.
