MOTHER-DAUGHTER STATION

Concept A Mother-Daughter CNG system is a combination of equipment that delivers compressed natural gas (CNG) from an area serviced by a gas pipeline to another area that is not serviced by a gas pipeline, through the use of compressors and mobile gas storage trailers. The basic concept is to compress the gas at a high-capacity compressor (Mother) station and transport it in storage trailers to one or more booster (Daughter) stations, where it is dispensed to fill vehicles or used for residential/commercial/industrial applications. Mother-Daughter systems are used in areas where the pipeline infrastructure does not reach the areas that require the delivery of CNG fuel to vehicles and other natural gas end-users.

Mother Station
The Mother station typically consists of two or more high-capacity CNG compressors designed to fill large mobile storage trailers, but may also have the ability to directly fill vehicles as well. The use of two or more high-capacity compressors provides high flow capacity as well as system redundancy. A gas dryer may be used upstream of the compressor if the moisture content of the pipeline gas is too high. Depending on the use of the station, the gas is either compressed directly to a mobile storage trailer or a waiting vehicle. For vehicle filling, a priority panel, storage system, and dispenser is required. To fill the mobile storage trailers, a high-capacity fill post is used which has a flexible fill hose, valves and a nozzle to connect the compressor discharge gas to the trailer inlet. These trailers can be filled to 3600 psig (approximately 250 barg), in order to maximize their carrying capacity. This pressure may be higher or lower depending on local regulations and the pressure rating of the storage cylinders.

The CNG Storage Tube Trailers

The CNG storage tubes trailers used to transport the gas are generally made up of cylinders manifold together as a single storage buffer, whereas stationary storage systems used at CNG stations are usually made up of cylinders joined into three (3) separate banks: low, medium and high. Because gas that is transported in mobile storage trailers may require pressure boosting at the Daughter station. As the gas in the trailer is utilized and the pressure diminishes, it can be diverted through the booster compressor to elevate the pressure to 3600 psig, then sent to either the dispenser or the stationary storage system, which is split into two banks (medium and high). In this fashion, by utilizing the storage trailer as Low Bank storage, the Daughter station can operate as a normal three-bank, fast-fill station.

Daughter Station

The compressor used at a Daughter station can be classified as a booster compressor. It requires only one or two stages of compression since the supply gas (from the mobile storage trailer) is already at an elevated pressure (435 ~ 3600 psig / 30 ~ 250 barg). The Daughter system is able to use the full pressure available from the trailer (without pressure regulation) making the system the most efficient, since it is capitalizing on the potential energy already stored in the mobile trailer gas. Whenever the gas in the storage trailer is higher than the onboard pressure of the vehicle, gas can flow directly from the trailer to the vehicle (or to the ground storage if the pressure is below that of the trailer and no vehicles are filling). Once the trailer pressure drops below 3000 psig, gas flows through the compressor to be boosted back up to 3600 psig. Even during compression, gas can continue to flow directly from the trailer to the vehicle, emulating Low Bank storage.

There is also a minimum pressure that the storage trailer should be drawn down to before it becomes inefficient to remove more gas. If you use your mobile storage trailer down to 435 psig, you are removing approximately 90% of the gas by volume. The Daughter compressors can easily operate at a suction pressure of 435 psig, which provides the following benefits: a) Decreases the loss of potential energy in the stored gas b) Allows the use of a lower cost two-stage booster compressor c) Eliminates the need for suction pressure regulation d) Eliminates the need for reheating the depressurized gas (due to extreme cooling) e) Simplifies the system and lowers the purchase and maintenance costs
