Liberation theology at loggerheads with Tamils at Lanka who seek a peaceful negotiated new life, and the game played by Remnants of LTTE overseas fearing loss of coffers and possible prosecution. A settlement is imminent points our analysis.

All insurrections and Terrorism thrives on the weakness of its foes which are psychological. Mainly these weaknesses are the Achilles heel of its enemies- who invariably are State players and a perceived brute majority and the anarchist siege takes advantage of this perception playing upon the asymmetry of the Conflict. In this it calls upon a set of superior forces to prevail over its foes on moral grounds by projecting this perceived vulnerability of a segment of humanity to a perceived aggression against this humanity by working on the bond of this humanity they share. This worked well as long as the equation was merely seen as an asymmetrical conflict where a segment of humanity is at rebellion against a superior entity- a State or a Majority population at whose mercies was the legitimate rights and existence of vulnerable minority humanity. Even behind this paradigm of the underdog as a legitimate rebellion of liberation from the oppression of a superior entity, were already in place an agreed upon legitimization of this projection of conflicts by the prevailing global powers. Which were the penultimate Conflict of ethical forces- International Communism and its global thrust of expansionism? The tacit approval of this Sympathy for the causes of liberation movements was based on this Containment of Soviet Empire and International Communism rather than as a cause per se. The shrewd former head of the LTTE K Pathmanathan articulates this very clearlythat the LTTE kept losing on the ground because of its failure to grasp this Shift of Global paradigm regarding Liberation movements post 9/11. The failure of its Strategic perception towards this change in International sympathy from a legitimization and tacit approval to that of zero tolerance to armed insurrections since 9/11 attacks by Al qaeda as a common threat surely lead to its disappointment in an expected Intervention to halt the Lankan Armys swift and steady advance till it almost nearly wiped out the LTTE.

Almost, since the International wing of its operations were spared and let to continue with its work although with constraints and frustrating clamp downs.

ANOTHER TECTONIC POLICY SHIFT

Just like the LTTE failed to grasp the Shift in the prevailing global powers paradigms regarding Liberation movements- the Lankan state too had failed to note a recent Re-Shift of their stand. This was the Arab Springs being presented as an opportunity to the prevailing global powers-particularly those seeking Democratization of the Islamic world. Despite many alarms sounded about this line of policy to help actively armed insurrections with an aim to usher in a democratic regime change as a step towards the western dispensation and away from radical Islamization. That waiting on the wings of the cheered up Uprising movements- were the very Islamist forces of radicalization that would replace the pro-western though despotic regimes. That exactly was the disastrous result of this reshift of active encouragement of armed struggles of liberation at the Arab world. Instead of democracy and more freedom and liberal values-the Arab Springs became Islamist springs and all that it achieved was empowering the Islamic Brotherhood, Salaafists, Ennhada and its likes in place of the Mubaraks and Gaddafis. This subtle shift of prevailing western alliance is what is now playing out at Lanka as a renewed shift in focus selectively on the Lankan conduct of its ending to the decades long civil war. This is what has renewed the hopes and ambitions of a previously obvious lost cause of reviving the Liberation struggle and secession at Lanka by the Tamils.

The question now is- how far would they go? To obtain a clear answer to this question- we must weigh in balance the most recent developments, the shift in western alliances interests and its sympathies and most importantly the impact of this shift in one of the main ideological sponsors of this particular Liberation movement-that of the Vatican and its Liberation theology. We need to weigh these with the Will of the people on whose behalf this liberation cause was mooted. Therein lies the weakest link in the chain. Unlike Arab springs where the masses suffering the oppressive regime were almost on a single platform supportive to the Uprising and change of political order, the Lankan Tamils are at their tethers end and have no such widespread moral support to the cause of an uprising anymore. They are disillusioned with this Liberation and their will is for a peaceful coexistence. The Will of the concerned people on the ground there at Lanka being at odds with the Political drive of its overseas remnants of the Liberation cause sets this particular Conflict apart from the Arab Springs. When worked upon, this singular factor would frustrate any such misapplication of Arming an Uprising at lanka as an extension of Arab Springs. However, this opportunity would not be left untested and tried to its utmost. But it is futile to work on an Uprising when the people there hardly enthusiastic about another conflict. So the real question is why then this Drama of Lankan war Crimes ? To arrive at the answer to this we must take a look at all the Players of this Game and we will smile at the only possible Game ending.

We said Drama- since this couldve been avoided if Lanka had foreseen all this and worked upon the Diaspora remnants of the LTTE and thrashed out an understanding. That is exactly they are doing now. Dont be surprised that all this fuss is about to fizzle out. Lawyers are all just about such stuff. And Out of Court settlements.

We will continue our analysis of the Game, in our next installment. In that we would show how the International Intervention at the last hour never materialized and this reckless game boomeranged on LTTe on the ground during the Lankan war. How that devastating failed expectation was given another lease of life-by Arab Springs. How Liberation theology came centre stage at Vatican during this most crucial hour- redefining the western alliances perceptions about the Liberation cause of Tamils. How all this was in response to Fear of the LTTE remnants in its culpability in the Lankan Conflict and its crimes against humanity. How all this was also about money fear that it would be lost. And how all this was acted upon to push them into a Game that they cannot win. More importantly, how International activist lawyers were deployed to turn the tables on Lanka at the UN.

That not only was Lankans exonerated for its conduct of war but was in a position to prosecute the LTTe remnants for its contribution to LTTEs long struggle. How media was then set upon to manipulate ill informed masses. How this fear made them rework the table arrangement so that they were reassured that they could have the money and fear no future prosecution. To the clueless puppets of the ambitious political puppeteers- what seems a cornered Lankan regime for its subterfuge and hiding of its real or imagined crimesThe real Game is quite the opposite. There are no such political opportunities to be played. The Settlement is about reassurance to the LTTe remnants that they would not be prosecuted ever. Their money would be left with them but only thing getting negotiated perhaps would be that this not be deployed for any Conflict Resumption. That the Lawyers hardly have in mind and would go for it. Unless the political extremist minority within the minority make them believe in a futile round of wasted time and efforts bearing the cross of Liberation theology. We believe the LTTe remnants have enough wisdom and acumen to thrash out a settlement and begin a fresh chapter moving forward marginalizing a dwindling minority of War drum beaters. If we probe the dark Side of the moon- we would be able to see how a beleaguered bunch of a terror network called upon International activist Lawyers and a willing media house to rescue them from a tight spot of having to face Prosecution for crimes against humanity. And how they just delivered that bail out, since thats exactly their professional service.

To start with we must read carefully the successive Resolutions of the UN HRC and how it put the fear of possible Prosecution for crimes against humanity in the minds of the LTTE overseas remnants and how it made them hire the guys to bail them out and orchestrate this Drama.
