And information on the once in a lifetime DSMS trip to
When DSMS pupils returned in September the school had brought in the much anticipated vertical tutors system. This means that 2 or 3 pupils from every year are put in the same tutor group together. They spend 20 minutes a day together after first lesson with 2 tutors to guide them, however the year 11s are taking on the role of leading the tutor groups. Vertical Tutor groups have

been tried and tested around the country and the responses to them have been mixed. In some schools, vertical tutoring has worked really well because both teachers and pupils have been working as a team to make the new system a success. Mr Kipling says Vertical Tutors are a wonderful new innovation at DSMS and they have made the relationships between the school and parents even better.
There is a new housing system too. All form classes are in either the Topaz Tigers, Sapphire Sharks, Emerald Eagles or Ruby Rattlesnakes. The pupils have assemblies in these houses, they race for them in sports day (back) and competitions also take place. In conclusion both the new housing and tutor system has been an amazing success. DSMS Fundraising
Over the last few months, DSMS has done fundraising for a number of charities, one of them being the 10 for 10 campaign which helps the families of soldiers who are serving or who have previously served in warzones like Afghanistan or Iraq. DSMS held an own clothes day and the year 11 senior prefects ran the assembly. They talked about the families of those who have a relative in the army and how much it means to them knowing that they are safe. On the 16th of November, DSMS pupils raised money for the charity Children in Need, they did a dress down day and bake sales in order to help this charity. Altogether the whole school raised 570. This charity helps children who are disadvantaged. They send money to small and large organisations who help young people all over the U.K. The money raised by Children in Need changes young peoples lives everywhere. By Lauren Hebden

When I become the Minister of Transport
Kick-starting
Kickstarting websites are websites that start-up companies can use to raise money for their product. It is like an online version of 'Dragons Den'. You pitch your product, maybe upload a prototype photo, state how much you want to raise and the time you want to raise it in. Then, if people like your idea, they can donate as much as they like in return for a free model or something like that (whatever you think if right). One of the most successful ideas that came from kickstarter.com was the Pebble Watch which you can connect to your iPhone or Android phone via Bluetooth 4.0. It sends notifications, text messages and other useful information from your smartphone to the watch. It can also be used to send information back to your phone (like if you want to change the track or if you want to use your phones GPS for a track-

Over the last 200 years almost all of the houses in the UK have been knocked down and then rebuilt so how long will it take until we need to start replacing and updating every single road? Instead of re-tarmacking them I think the Government should put down electronic rails and replace cars with hightech pods. This sounds unrealistic however the only thing holding this possibility back is the price it will cost. The pods on the rail will work like a large digital Scalextric where you simply program where you want to go and it gets you there as fast as possible taking traffic into consideration. The main difference between this and a Scalextric is that you wont go flying from the road every time you go round corners. The pods will be programmed not to collide into each other and they will have sensors on the front so they cant run pedestrians over, instead they will just slow to a stop if someone stands in front of them. You will probably still need to wear a seatbelt still however you wont need a driver. Everyone in the pod will be able to plug in their iPod and listen to music or play games or do work. Of course, depending on how many passengers you want there will be different sized pods so you wont get a 2-man pod if you are travelling in a group of 8. Just to clarify, there is a 0% chance of me ever being the Transport Minister but I think this idea should be considered as a new, long-term transport system.
ing app on the smart watch). The Pebble Watch has an epaper screen and the battery life that can last around 7 days. Unfortunately, the watch does not currently work with Blackberry or Windows Phone however hopefully that will be coming soon. The Pebble Watch is going to cost around 100. What makes the pebble watch so special is that it made $1,000,000 in 28 hours when it's goal was only $100,000. By the end of the 5 week deadline it had 68,929 backers and had raised $10,266,846 in the end.

Smartphones have become a large part of people lives whether it be for a good or bad reason. Whether its keeping in touch with everyone, anywhere or passing time on a journey. But near enough everyone can admit to an unhealthy obsession to something or another at some point in their lives and many of them will simply be a Smartphone app. So heres a rundown of the five most addictive apps.
Jump, jump, jump. No doubt everyone has heard of doodle jump from friends or relatives and heard good things about this game and rightly so. Its simplicity in both controls and game play make this game creditable in every way. Temple run is a relatively new game which took the app store and android store by storm. It has a slight Indiana Jones influence, youve stolen a golden idol and the protectors are not happy and chase you till they catch you. Your aim as the thief is to run away whilst collecting more loot to boost your score. Though it sounds complicated this game does not let you simply put it down and walk away.
The name cut the rope is very self explanatory, a piece of candy is extended on a piece of rope which a little animal wants to eat. The only way to get it there is to cut the ropes. This game has hundreds of levels with each set having its own twist. These twists make this game instantly replayable.
The second most addictive app is the mine craft pocket edition. Though there are many elements from the pc version which have been missed out in the pocket edition, the core elements of the game are still strong enough to make this game addictive no matter where you take it.
Top of the tree of addictive apps is Angry birds. Angry birds is the ultimate game for Smartphones. It was the first game app on the store which sold more than one million copies. It has had over twelve million sales on the apple app store alone not including the android or windows store. This alone is reason enough to be dubbed most addictive app of all time.

Teachers Pet
Teacher - Mr Harris Pets name - Elma. Pets age - 6 or 7 years old. Breed - Moggie Elmas story.
Elma came to live with us 3 years ago after 2 failed attempts to rehome her. The RSPCA removed her from a house where 16 animals (11 cats and 5 dogs) were found living in appalling conditions. Elma had been born in the house and had never been outside. She had had to fight for food and still tends to scoop it out of her dish onto the floor to eat. She had no hair when she was found, due to a flea allergy, was riddled with fleas and had ears full of ear mites. Her skin was cut and scabbed from scratching, and she was very frightened of people. The first family who took her home soon returned her to the RSPCA. Elma is VERY vocal- she meows A LOT!- and the people who took her couldnt stand the noise. The second family who took her asked us to have her as she didnt get on with their other cats. So she came to live with us. It took a while (and a lot of scratching and biting) before she began to trust us and settle down. So after fostering her for a while, we adopted her from the RSPCA! She still doesnt go outside much- she doesnt do wet and cold, or windy weather, or snow- and the back door has to be left open. She doesnt like other cats and can see off our neighbours Tom cat who is about 3 times her size. She doesnt like dogs either and will have a go at them. Apart from that shes fine. She likes to be with my wife all of the time (mummys girl!) and everyone else is second best in her eyes. And she still meows a lot!!!
Fifa 13 is a very realistic football game which is probably the biggest selling game every year. Fifa has been around for many years and a new version of the game comes out every year where millions of copies get sold worldwide. It has all licensed teams from around the world and your favourite players are likely to be there too. The game has two very different game modes and different activities for you to do such as Skill Games and Manager Mode. When this game comes out it is around 45 (it depends on what games console you have). So its a fair bit of money but the game is well worth the price!

Dry Shampoo may seem like a modern invention however it has actually been around for at least 4 century's in France (however the ingrediants were petty simple in the 1700s). Recently brands like Batiste have made it popular however you can make it yourself out of mainly salt and corn. Problems with dry shampoo may lead to dandruff, hairloss and dry hair. On the other hand, dry shampoo comes in very handy when on holiday or camping.
On the other hand, does this really need to be worried about? Products so far have had no signs of drugs or dangerous chemicals, giving the indication that the food is perfectly edible and will do no harm. Somebody quoted: The Horse meat scandal does not bother me in the slightest! A lot of people choose to ignore the horse meat scandal, rather than worry about something that is proven not to affect them. So Whats the Verdict? Overall, the Horsemeat Scandal has been very worrying and concerning. Drugs, dangerous chemicals, all have been a disturbance to the public. Even the thought of not

BlackBerry 10 launches
On Wednesday 30th January 2013 BlackBerry 10 was launched. It is completely original and not like any other BlackBerry OS and it is also different from iOS (Apple) and Android. It has a unique thing called BlackBerry Hub which combines Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, BBM, Gmail and Hotmail so all of your messages are in one place. It also has some cool camera modes which allow you to change a picture once youve taken it. The phone allows you to have a separate profile for your work and personal life so you wont have work emails coming into your personal inbox and you can have separate apps on the accounts. BlackBerry also announced the Z10 and Q10, both of them are touch-screen devices which are the first devices ever running BlackBerry 10.
The graph above shows the prediction of the elderly population compared to the amount of children there is. By 2050 it is estimated that the amount of elderly people there are will outnumber children.

Sir Francis Bacon said knowledge is power and through the ages wealthy families would amass huge libraries in their stately homes as a symbol of their status. These days you dont need physical books to have access to knowledge the Internet opens a world of information to you and now that we have connected smartphones and tablets this knowledge can be delivered right into the palm of your hand any time you have a whim to learn something new. Whether that something is finding the perfect quote to start an article, checking out reviews for tonights gigs in your location, or just getting a bit better at Temple Run, its hardly surprising we have fallen in love with our mobile connected devices.

The smartphone now replaces alarm clocks, timers, stop watches, calculators, cameras, camcorders, video editing software's, calendars, games consoles, mail, address books, portable DVD players, MP3 players, shopping lists, jotters, pads, papers, dicophones, dictionaries, SatNavs, tickets, torches and many more things. Smartphones save time and money however they also make us a lot lazier. In my opinion, social networking is the most addictive waste of time ever! It is also dangerous too as it makes it easy for hackers to find out your personal information. Cyber bullying is a whole new type of bullying which has been invented by people sharing their opinion or trying to show off on social networks! Despite this, social networks are brilliant for finding and getting in contact with old friends or people who you may have once known. They also allow you to share pictures and videos with your friends easily without needing to pay anything. The future of technology is mighty however it is depressing to think that as time goes on, out lives will revolve more and more around computers, tablets and smartphones. Smartphones will soon become our life support without them we will be lost. What else can we expect in the future? The iPhone 36? Voice controlled houses? Free whole world Wifi? Or even holographic phones?
PAPERMAIL answers...
In a nutshell, yes, however it is not just teenagers it is adults and children as well. Teenagers are usually the age group associated with technology though because they use it the most simply because it is easy to use and it doesnt take much effort. Smartphone's such as the iPhone are found in most teenagers pockets now and they hold so much irrelevant information such as Facebook and Twitter updates which just distract people from doing other worthwhile things. Direct messaging on phones now makes it unimportant to speak to someone face to face which scientists would say is debatably bad for our brains.

When hot tasty gravy trickles down your throat thats when the fantastic flavors hit you. But when the fabulous smell of roasting meat oozes up your nose, your stomach rumbles and your taste buds tingle. But an even better feeling is when you get a plate full of roast turkey followed by colourful vegetables and irresistible gravy. So many flavors and colours and smells all put together to make a delicious Christmas dinner. And usually this once-a-year celebration dinner is topped off with a traditional Christmas pudding. A delicious rich cake filled with dried fruit and nuts sometimes served with brandy crme or brandy butter. Or the other option we had at DSMS is an orange cheesecake with white squirty cream. Wyvern TV
On the 27th February 2012 the DSMS TV Studio was finished and 3 journalists from the Wyvern took on the challenge of launching a brand new Wyvern TV show. Hosted by pupils in the school and with stories coming from local and national sources we hope that you will enjoy our monthly program which will get uploaded to the Wyvern Blog and YouTube. In the 1 year we have been running the Wyvern TV we have interviewed MP of Darlington - Jenny Chapman, editor of the Northern Echo - Peter Barron, freelance Journalist - Ian Lamming, Head School Governor - Doctor David Hall and many more people from all around the North East of England. We also cover stories which are covered in the newspaper however on TV we can show videos of the story instead of just pictures. Each program we like to make unique, inserting a funny line or a quirky story. We are not trying to rival BBC or ITV news, instead we are trying to make an interesting news show which pupils from DSMS will watch and enjoy.
I think that it has been an amazing resource for the school to have.
Each program takes us around 2 weeks to make. This includes script writing, filming, finding stories and editing it when it is finished. The episodes vary from around 10-20 minutes depending on what were reporting on and who were talking to. Each video we make and upload gets around 200 views however we are currently trying to do more advertising around school. Apart from the Wyvern, the TV Studio is going to be used in lessons such as English, Art and CBL. We hope the TV studio will be used to its potential and give pupils an insight to how a TV studio works. PAPERMAIL: The TV Studio has been in fully working order for a year now and I think that it has been an amazing resource for the school to have. There is so much you can use it for! Making music videos, filming drama pieces, producing a news show or just experiencing how a TV studio works. When I first started working with he
TV studio I couldn't believe how many jobs both in front and behind camera there were. For a start you need a good script written, then someone to run it on the auto-cue, someone to set up the camera shots and the set and sometimes even a group of people to sort out the green screen. You can check out the Wyvern TV for yourself at www.youtube.com/DSMSwyvern or scan the QR code (below). If you have any more ideas you can leave them in the comments box of the YouTube video or tweet them to us @DSMS_Wyvern

Textbooks, timetables and exercise books were all dismissed for a week of creative subjects. These captivated pupils in a unique way that allows technology lessons to take a front seat as we had entire days that focus on creating one-off projects that allowed a welcome break from our ordinary lessons. in multiple subjects. For example in Woodwork lessons we created nameplates that were personnel to us rather than the target markets we usually work towards, and we have tried out new features to be added to lessons like app making and much more! Overall Enrichment week was a valuable experience that has enhanced the curriculum in a new, refreshing way.

Darlington FC
Darlington FC has struggled over the past year or two going through liquidisation and moving from their 25,000 seater stadium to a 1,500 standing and sitting area next to Sainsburys! Luckily though, they came out with 2 excellent coaches in Martin Grey and Brian Atkinson (both exSunderland players). Although Darlington has gone down many leagues they still have quality players. At the moment Darlington are in their first season since relegation and are top of the league above rivals Spennymoor. I think it will be a long time until Darlington will go back up through the leagues as a great team which they used to be. With Martin Grey and Brian Atkinson at the helm the sky is the limit. By Sam Hutchinson
Now Darlington Mowden Park have officially moved into their new 27,500 seat stadium, things are looking on the up for this once small rugby club. The club gained the money to buy this stadium by selling their previous land for 6 million to bellways and they used 2 million of this money to buy this huge stadium. The
remaining 4 million is being used to develop 42 acres of land across the road into 8 rugby pitches, a football pitch and a 3G pitch however plans have been halted on this stage as recent surveillance of the land shows signs of the near extinct species of Grey Crested Newt and this means that all plans of building have to be stopped
until these Newts are evacuated from the area. The current setup of the stadium is very similar to the way Darlington F.C had it previously but Mowden Park have just replaced the football goals with Rugby posts and changed the Darlington F.C signs with Mowden ones. By James Allison

Assistant Head teacher, Miss Kelly, ran the great north run this year for Children with Cancer. She ran it in a time of 2 hours 23 minutes and she raised 100 however she is doing some more fundraising in School at the moment. Unfortunately she didnt beat Mo Farah but Miss Kelly says Thats only because he didnt run it this year but I wouldnt have wanted to embarrass him so I ran slowly! Miss Kelly added that she did enjoy it. Its hard work and a challenge to train but its very satisfying sprinting over the finish line and knowing that you've ran 13.1 miles (without stopping).
Miss Kelly also said that she would definitely be doing the great north run next year.
Chris Cook, an athlete who competed for us in the 2008 Olympics, came into school in 2012 to hold a private fitness lesson with selected pupils and open the brand new swimming pool. He is now an ambassador for a Sky Sports campaign set up to change sports throughout areas for students. I interviewed him when he came into school. Q. So Chris, what inspired you to become a swimmer? A: When I was younger, I watched the 1988 Olympics and after that, parents, friends and teachers were a big part of it.
Q. Have you always wanted to be a swimmer, or did you have another career in mind? A. When I was younger I had family members who were bus drivers, and I thought that was really cool at the time, so I wanted to do that first, but then watching the Olympics, I was inspired by the athletes and I wanted to be like them. Q. Do you have a favourite stroke, and if so, what is it and why? A. My favourite stroke is the breast stroke, because I had a fun time swimming it, and it was also the only one I could do.
