Reflexive Pronouns Level: low Intermediate Date: November 29,2012 No.

of students: 810 Grammatical aims: For the students to use reflexive pronouns accurately and fluently. Functional Aims: To communicate indicating an independent action using myself, yourself, itself, herself, himself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves. Objective: The students will be able to demonstrate the use of the reflexive pronouns as they describe an action done by a machine through creating an advertisement. Assessment: The students will successfully write an advertisement for a automatic machine and present it to the class with using the correct reflexive pronoun. Language Skills: Listening: teachers guiding instruction, explanation, peer-listening, and presentation Speaking: Sharing ideas with the class, pair-work Writing: writing the advertisement, gap activity Reading: reading the advertisements presented, gap activity Materials: printed advertisements, gap activities, pictures Anticipated Problems: students confusing the singular and plural forms of the reflexive pronouns, having difficulties seeing when the subject and the object of the verb are the same person. Methodology: ESA model ENGAGE: 5 minutes Warm-up: Start the lesson with a short miming session, where the students act out an action and the class has to guess what they are doing. (a list of verbs can be provided) Ask the students, Think about an activity or skill that you did where you taught yourself how to do it. Tell your partner. Responses such as, I taught myself to.., I learned how to .all by myself. STUDY: 10-15 minutes Write the word automatic on the board. What does the word automatic mean such as when we think of equipment and machines? Show pictures of washing machine, coffee maker, etc. Elicit answers. Hand out the three advertisements to each student. Have the students read the ads and discuss how they are possible. The first one is possible,-teach yourself English. Who is doing the teaching? The other two are more futuristic and imaginary. What does itself refer to? What does herself refer to? Draw students attention to the phrase, by herself. What does this mean? meaning without help or on her own. Hand out the three advertisements to each student. Have the students read the ads and discuss how they are possible. Have the students work in pairs and ask them to imagine a robot that could do something for you automatically. What would it do? Ask the students to write an advertisement for a male/female robot of various kinds or equipment. The advertisement should tell what it can do all by itself. Discuss about using herself/himself. Provide a list of verb words to help students decide on actions. STUDY: 10-15 minutes Teacher presents a review of the reflexive pronouns by writing words on board and completing chart for subject pronouns/reflexive pronouns. Ask students to write on board and help fill in chart. Give a controlled practice exercise to complete. ADVERTISEMENTS: ELECTRIC ROBOT HOUSECLEANER: Shes wonderful! Shes automatic!
