Training Simulation
The value of simulation training for individual and team sport athletes cannot be under-estimated. During the past 20 years simulation training has been used by coaches and sport psychologies in many sports. (Orlick, 2000). Simulation training should include how a team will respond positively in various games situation and how the team should respond when a desired or practiced result does not come about during competition. Simulation training provides advantages to athletes in preparation for highlevel competition. In addition to placing the players in the exact situations that are likely to occur during competition, simulation training can also place a high degree of stress on the athlete, much like the stress they may encounter in competitive match. Handball coaches must be well versed in simulation areas such as the start of a match, a bad match to a match, end of the half close match (up or down), player up and player down situations at various point in the game, passive play warnings (especially late in close matches), penalty shots, end-of-game situation, special defenses, offense against special defenses and playing through bad officiating calls at various times of the contest. This is but a brief list of common simulated game situations in handball. A very effective simulation in handball is to have the officials intentionally make poor calls at various times during the match. This is most effective when the players do not know that the coach has told the official to make the poor calls intentionally. By providing this type of simulation you will see who can handle the stressful situation and the bad call in the simulated setting. Players unable to play through in practice will need some reorienting (coaching) or they will not be effective in the actual competitive situations and may have to substitute for in a close end of match. This may be particularly true in a match plagued by several questionable officiating calls. As a team gets closer to competition, simulations can play a crucial role in the psychological and tactical preparation of the team.
