Question 9 Figure Q.9 shows the plan and cross section of a plane frame building structure. The total dead load on the floor is 6 kN/m2 and imposed load is 3 kN/m2 i) Calculate the design load and set out the critical load arrangements to comply with BS 8110: Part 1 for the continuous T-beam on lines B-B shown in Fig. Q.9(a) ii) If the building cross section is subjected to a characteristic uniform wind load of 3.5 kN/m within the full height of the building as shown in Fig Q 9 (b), analyse and indicate the axial forces in columns, shear forces in beams and bending moments for all columns and beams. Clearly indicate the assumptions you made for the analysis. Assume all the columns have equal cross-sectional area.

The stair slab is supported on a beam at the top and on the landing of the flight at the bottom. The imposed loading is 5 kN/m2. The stair is built 110 mm into the sidewall of the stair well (see the section). The clear width of the stair is 1.25 m and the flight consists of eight risers at 180 mm and seven goings of 220 mm with 20 mm nosing. The stair treads and landings have 15 mm granolithic finish and the underside of the stair and landing slab has 15 mm of plaster finish. The material are grade 30 concrete and grade 460 reinforcement.

Design the longitudinal reinforcement for the staircase and check for shear resistance, deflection and crack control. Provide a sketch of the reinforcement details for the final design. Assume a concrete cover of 25 mm and waist slab thickness of 100 mm for the staircase design.

Fig. Q 10 [30 marks] Question 11 A cantilever retaining wall shown in Fig. Q.11 is to support a bank of earth 3.5 m high. The top surface is horizontal behind the wall but it is subjected to a dead load surcharge of 15 kN/m2. The soil behind the wall is well-drained sand with the following properties: Density =17.6 kN/m3 Angle of internal friction =300 The material under the wall has a safe bearing pressure of 100 kN/m2. The coefficient of friction between the base and the soil is 0.5. i) ii) Check the maximum soil pressure and stability of the wall against sliding and overturning. Design the reinforcement for the wall and also check for the shear and crack control.

Use grade 30 concrete and grade 460 reinforcement in your design.
