TEST MEMORANDUM
Ref. No. : SB - 001/TM-53

Vessel Name Main/Sub Code System / Component Location of Test Type of Test 1.0 PURPOSE:

: : : : : Magnetic Particle Test

The purpose of this test memo is to provide specific instruction conducting Magnetic Particle Testing in ferromagnetic materials. This test memo describes testing techniques, evaluation of indications for welded, cast and forged materials. This procedure provides information required to perform the test for detecting surface and near-surface discontinuities. 2.0 SCOPE: The scope of this procedure covers all on-board and in-service repair, as required. This procedure also applies to mandatory testing as specified by Customer or Ships Class Surveyor.

3.0 TEST EQUIPMENT/CHEMICALS: - Magnetic particle white contrast paint - Magnetic particle suspension bath - Magnetic yoke (reticulated legs) - Field indicator - Lighting fixture (if required) - Caliper / steel rule 4.0 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS: It is the responsibility of the personnel to comply with appropriate safety and health practices on the test area. Keep test area clear and safe. Ensure that no any worker inside the tank/compartment to be test. Wear proper PPE i.e., hard hat, fall protection harness, goggles, etc.

NOTICE Carefully read and obey all CAUTIONS and WARNING on this Test Memorandum, equipment and chemical being used. Refer to the description of these statement that follow. - A CAUTION statement is given to prevent damage to the equipment. - A WARNING statement is given to prevent personal injury.

5.0 TEST PROCEDURE: 5.1 Pre-Cleaning : Prior to actual testing, each component shall be dry and free from any contaminants i.e., dirt, grease, lint, scale, paint, blast media residue, and other extraneous matter which would mask defects. WARNING: Read and understand all safety precautions regarding chemical usage upon commencing on testing. Wear proper PPE. 5.1.1 Chemical cleaning processes such as detergent, solvent and alkali may be required to remove any contaminant that might interfere with the process. This may be accomplished manually using spray type solvent cleaner or alcohol and clean rags, as applicable for the type of contaminant to be removed. 5.1.2 Cleaning by grit blasting or immersion of part in hot water may be accomplished. 5.1.3 It is essential that the component be thoroughly clean and dry. Drying of the component can be accomplished using manual wipe and/or application of pressurized dry air. 5.2 White Contrast Paint Application: The white contrast paint may be applied by means of spraying. White contrast paint shall be sprayed in such a manner to ensure 100% coverage of the affected area to undergo examination. 5.3 Drying of Part: Drying of part is accomplished by normal evaporation. The aid of filtered shop air may be used, as applicable.

5.4 Test Part Magnetization: The Mag. Yoke is position on the test part and start applying magnetization. Spray ample amount of Magnetic particle suspension bath simultaneously with regards to part magnetization. 5.5 Test Part Evaluation: Interpretation of component shall be accomplished. As required, magnifiers up to 10X may be used to assist in the evaluation of indication present. 5.5.1 The inspector shall exercise care in handling parts to reduce non-relevant indications, due to smudging or careless handling. 5.5.2 Accept/reject criteria shall be as specified in IACS No. 68 or other customer approved variance, as applicable to a particular component. When no guidance is given, a linear indications that is 0.030 inches (0.8mm) or greater is considered relevant, and therefore shall be rejected and or rectified. 5.6 Test Part Demagnetization: The Mag. Yoke is position on the test part and start applying magnetization then slowly pulling away the Mag. Yoke to dismount against the test part. 5.6.1 The inspector shall perform gauss reading and shall not exceed 3 gauss anywhere in the test part. Validation of the residual field strength is accomplished with a calibrated field indicator. If residual field is greater than 3 gauss, repeat the demagnetization - verification procedure, until corrected. 5.7 Post Cleaning: Component/part shall be post-cleaned of magnetic particle contrast paint/residue and when required, corrosionprotected, per the applicable customer specified procedure. 5.8 The Magnetic Particle Test Report shall be prepared after the completion of the inspection and test.
