CoreBrace Buckling Restrained Braces

MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY
Building codes recognize the improved seismic behavior of Buckling Restrained Braced Frames (BRBFs), allowing UP TO A 25% DESIGN LOAD REDUCTION, compared to other commonly used lateral systems. This means: FEWER frames LESS structural weight SMALLER foundations CoreBrace BRBs are engineered to have essentially the same capacity in tension and compression, resulting in less overstrength built into the structure. Additionally, they can be used in single diagonal configurations without design penalties. This means: FEWER braces and connections SMALLER frame columns and beams SMALLER connections to the structure and foundations

COMPLETE CONTROL
CoreBrace BRBs are manufactured in our AISC CERTIFIED SHOP, located adjacent to our design offices in West Jordan, Utah. This means: Fabrication constantly monitored to meet the HIGHEST QUALITY STANDARDS Maximum SCHEDULE CONTROL

REDUCED CONSTRUCTION TIME

CoreBrace BRBs are designed to be extremely QUICK AND EASY TO INSTALL. Our team works in close coordination with the steel fabricator in the detailing phase of the project to minimize conflicts in the field. This means: FASTER ERECTION of buildings NO ADDITIONAL LEAD TIME beyond that required by the structural steel fabricator CoreBrace is committed to MEET OR EXCEED our clients DELIVERY EXPECTATIONS each and every time

NON-PROPRIETARY SYSTEM
BRBs are a codified building lateral load resisting system. This means:

Engineering Overview
HIGHLY DUCTILE PERFORMANCE
CoreBrace Buckling Restrained Braces are structural elements composed of a steel core encased in a grout-filled steel tube. The grout/ casing assembly confines the core, increasing its critical load to a point that the axial capacity in compression is only limited by the yield stress of the steel. The concept allows the core to resist the design axial forces utilizing the FULL STEEL STRENGTH while the casing resists flexural buckling. Proprietary Interface Material is used to separate the two resisting systems, with MINIMIZED FRICTION. The result is a high performance brace that DOES NOT BUCKLE.

In this mechanism the steel core yields in tension and compression, dissipating energy with a SUSTAINED SYMMETRIC HYSTERETIC BEHAVIOUR. As a consequence, the braces act as structural fuses, concentrating all the activity in the plastic range while gussets, beams and columns remain elastic during a seismic event. CoreBrace BRBs use a STABLE END PROJECTION from the casing, which eliminates the need for CJP welds. This provides improved redundancy in the load path and allows for post-event visual inspection.

TESTING
Independent SUBASSEMBLAGE TEST results show that CoreBrace BRBs exceed the requirements of AISC 341, providing consistent hysteretic behavior during multiple load cycles, at deformations up to 22 times the yield elongation.

Testing of CoreBrace Bolted Lug Braces was performed at the University of Utah, the University of California, San Diego and the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE) facilities in Taiwan. CoreBrace has successfully tested a brace spliced in the center and installed in two pieces, ideal for retrofit applications. Tested braces: Area: 4.0 in2 to 27.0 in2 Length: up to 31-0

CoreBrace Spliced Plate Braces have been tested at the University of Utah and the University of California, San Diego. Tested braces: Area: 1.5 in2 to 27.0 in2 Length: 15-0 to 19-0

CoreBrace Pinned Braces have been tested at the University of California, San Diego and the National Center for research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE) facilities in Taiwan. Tested braces: Area: 4.0 in2 to 27.0 in2 Length: 12-0 to 21-2

Testing of CoreBrace Welded Braces has been performed at the University of California, San Diego. Tested braces: Area: 2.0 in2 to 18.0 in2 Length: 21-6

EASY DESIGN AND DOCUMENTATION

CoreBrace provides engineers with REAL TIME DESIGN ASSISTANCE during all stages of the project. Our professionals report brace stiffness values to be used in the analysis of any structure and design the gusset plates that connect the BRBs to the frame columns and beams. Useful tools such as tables with reference values and MODELING GUIDES for structural analysis software (RAM STRUCTURAL Perform 3D Trilinear SYSTEM, RISA, 500 ETABS, SAP and 400 PERFORM 3D) are 300 available to help 200 engineers accurately 100 0 0 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 1 2 3 4 capture the BRBs -100 behavior in their -200 structural models with -300 the desired level of -400 refinement. -500
