METAL ROOF

Instructions to install the BROAN Solar Powered Roof Space Ventilator (SPRSV)
PLEASE READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS THOROUGHLY PRIOR TO INSTALLATION. These instructions are to be used as a guide to install the SPRSV on a typical corrugated metal roof however may require modification to suit the particular roof of installation. Disregard the flashing and fixing screws provided in the original carton. As a basic summary the unit is designed so the top edge of the mounting base sits under the ridge capping and the bottom edge of the mounting base is screwed directly to the metal roof sheeting. Special consideration: You may wish to install an additional batten under the roof sheet along a line where the predrilled holes in the bottom edge mounting base will align. This is covered in more detail ahead in these instructions. Locate your preferred installation position. Try to locate an area where the fan of the SPRSV will be between rafters but more importantly try to ensure the left and right edges of the mounting base are on the peaks of the roof sheeting (Photo 1). Mark the centre peak on the roof sheet where the SPRSV will be installed (Photo 2). You will need to cut a square hole approx. 340mm x 340mm in the roof sheeting. To do this, mark a spot on the roof sheet 380mm down from the bottom edge of the ridge capping on the centre peak of the area of installation (Photo 3). This will be the bottom of the square. Now mark the 340mm x 340mm square ensuring the bottom of the square is equal either side of the centre mark, meaning 170mm either side of centre (Photo 4). Before cutting the roof sheet, set the SPRSV over the marked square to ensure the round throat in the mounting base and the square on the roof sheet align with approx. 30mm of the top edge of the mounting plate left that will ultimately slide under the ridge cap when installed. Use an appropriate cutting tool and cut the square (Photo 5). Always wear the appropriate eye and hearing protection. Remove insulation from the new opening if required. As mentioned earlier, you may wish to install an additional batten under the roof sheet along a line where the predrilled holes in the mounting base will align. This is for added strength and is recommended in areas prone to high wind. Remove the ridge cap fixing screws in the area the SPRSV is to be installed (Photo 6). You will reuse these screws later. Put the unit in place with the top edge of the mounting base under the ridge cap. Align and straighten as required. Make a few marks on the roof sheet on the left, right and bottom edges (Photo 7). Remove the SPRSV. Using pliers, bend up the valleys in the bottom edge of the cut out (Photo 8). Now in the area the SPRSV will be installed apply a reasonable bead of a quality roof and gutter silicone along the peaks of the roof sheeting (Photo 9). Tilt the SPRSV and slide under the ridge cap. Line the unit up in the correct position then gently press the mounting base into the silicone. Special note: pay particular attention not to over tighten the screws in the following procedure. In the lower edge of the mounting base there are predrilled holes. Install the first self-drilling hex head fixing screw in the centre hole aligned over the centre peak in the roof sheet (Photo 10). Then install the 4 remaining hex head screws ensuring one is on the far left and one on the far right roof peaks (Photo 11). If required you can drill through the mounting base to hit the peaks in the roof sheet. Now use the additional self-drilling button head screws along the left and right sides of the mounting base. These can be drill directly through the mounting base and into the peaks of the roof sheeting on these sides (Photo 12). Reinstall the original ridge cap screws through the ridge cap, SPRSV mounting plate, peak of the roof sheet and into the roof batten on both the left and right sides of the SPRSV Photo 13). Use silicone to fill the valleys in the roof sheeting under the bottom edge of the mounting base (Photo 14). This will stop bugs and wind driven rain blowing back up the roof sheeting. Do a final inspection and silicone around the edges and any gaps that are evident. Remove the solar panel cover. The SPRSV is now ready (Photo 15). The unit has an in built thermostat that only allows the unit to operate when the temperature in the roof space reaches approx. 20c- 25c degrees.

TILED ROOF
Instructions to install the BROAN Solar Powered Roof Space Ventilator (SPRSV)
PLEASE READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS THOROUGHLY PRIOR TO INSTALLATION TO ENSURE YOU HAVE THE CONFIDENCE, SKILL LEVEL, TOOLS AND ACCESSORIES REQUIRED FOR THIS INSTALLATION. Alternatively employ a licensed roof plumber, builder or qualified person for installation. These instructions are provided as a guide for installation on flat, shingle style profiles or profiles with a drop down front edge. These instructions are not suitable with tile profiles that do not have a drop down front edge e.g. CSR Elbana or Boral Macquarie. These styles or similar would require the services of a qualified builder or roof plumber to consider an appropriate method for installation. Before you start, ensure the SPRSV is suitable for installation your roof tile profile Choose the best location to install your SPRSV. Important considerations are: Best exposure to the sun without shading from trees or other buildings etc. Central location on the roof. Down from the ridge capping enough to insure the installation does not disturb the pointing of the ridge cap.

Carefully cut the template provided into parts A and B as shown on the template (photo 1). Remove a roof tile or two in the preferred location to establish the best position preferably between two rafters. Using template B place the flat side of the template along the bottom edge of the tiles either side of the opening (photo 2). The template should be in the centre of the opening. Mark the curve on the top of the template on the tiles above the opening. Replace the tiles and reposition the curved side of template B and mark to create a full circle (photos 3 & 4). Although tiles can be cut in place you may want to remove some or all the tiles that have been marked with the circle. Cut the circle in the tiles using an angle grinder with diamond blade or equivalent tool. Always wear the appropriate eye and hearing protection. Reinstall the tiles (photo 5). Note: depending on the size of tiles you are working with, you may have cut out the side of a tile were it would overlap the adjoining tile or in some cases you may have actually cut a tile in half. In either case you may need to clamp the loose tile to an adjoining tile for support or you may even want to consider installing an additional batten for support. If your tiles are profiled with a drop down front edge similar to the tiles in these instructions, you will need to grind out part of the drop down edge in the upper tiles so the SPRSV can slot under the upper tiles without lifting them. To do this position template A over the opening with the two hash marks aligned on both sides of the opening. Mark the tiles on the left and right sides of the template (photo 6). Carefully grind out the drop down edge from the mark back to the opening. Only grind out the bottom edge the approx. thickness of the mounting base (photo 7).

Special note for flat/shingle profile tiles Generally these profiles do not require grinding the lower edge of the upper tile as there is minimal lift to the upper tiles however please pay particular attention to the amount of lift. It is highly recommended that even a small amount of lift will require special attention in the final application of silicone to ensure that even minor separation in adjoining tiles are sealed properly. You are now ready to install the SPRSV. Carefully slide the mounting plate of the SPRSV under the tiles in the top of the opening (photo 8). Push the unit up into place until the bottom edge of the mounting base is past the bottom edge of the lower tile (photo 9). This should cause minimal lifting to the upper tiles. If they do lift you may need to identify what is causing the lift and do a bit more grinding. There should be a bit of play in the positioning of the unit both left and right and up and down. If possible, try to position the unit to span to the high points on the tiles under both edges of the mounting base. It is not essential that the pre drilled mounting holes line up with the high points on the bottom edge as you can drill new holes in the mounting base as required. Make a few marks on the tiles on the left, right and bottom edges of the SPRSV (photo 10). Remove the SPRSV. In the area the SPRSV will be installed, apply a reasonable bead of a quality roof and gutter silicone along the peaks of the lower tiles in particular the outer most peaks where the SPRSV will sit (photo11). Tilt the SPRSV slightly and slide back into position. Once in the correct position gently press the mounting base into the silicone. Identify one of the pre drilled holes in the mounting base that aligns over the top of a peak in a tile. Using a power drill and appropriate masonry bit that suits the hex head fixing screws, drill the first hole then secure with one of the hex head fixing screws provided being careful not to over tighten the screws. This will help hold the unit in position while drilling the remaining holes. Identify four more peaks, drill then secure with the four remaining hex head fixing screws. If required, you can drill through the mounting base to hit the peaks in the tiles. Ultimately you need to ensure at least 5 screws are securing the unit with one on the far left and one on the far right peaks in the tiles. Use silicone to fill the valleys in the roof tiles under the bottom edge of the mounting base (photo 12). This will stop bugs and wind driven rain blowing back up the roof tile. Do a final inspection and silicone around the edges and any gaps that are evident. Remember that rain doesnt just come down the roof but can be driven back up the roof with high wind so ensure you keep this in mind when doing your final inspection to silicone. Remove the solar panel cover. The SPRSV is now ready (photo 13). The unit has an in built thermostat that only allows the unit to operate when the temperature in the roof space reaches approx. 20c- 25c degrees. ______________________________________________________________________________
