Emmanuel Bell by Farrell Mason, Minister of Family Life & Pastoral Care
This past Holy Week, Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris celebrated its 850th Birthday. To commemorate this special occasion, the Cathedral was gifted with a new set of bells. On Palm Sunday the bridges and gardens around the Cathedral overflowed with people to hear the first ringing of the Cathedral's new bells. Not since before the French Revolution have the bells pealed in perfect harmony. During the Revolution, all of the bells, except the famed Emmanuel Bell, were melted down to make cannons and coins. There is an Easter tradition in France that on Good Friday all of the church bells, "Les cloche volants," fly to Rome carrying with them all the grief and pain for Christ's suffering and death. The bells remain eerily silent for three days. On Easter morning the 'flying bells' return, ringing for the resurrection of life and laden full with gifts of chocolate bells and decorative eggs for all. Christians open up their windows and crowd into the streets to celebrate the pealing sounds of hope. The bells ring to remind every heart that God is and will always be a God of resurrections, life not death, and unfathomable love. For centuries, the French have joked that the bells of Notre Dame have rung off-key. But not this Easter Sunday! With the faithful Emmanuel Bell at the helm, the flying bells of Notre Dame returned on Easter Sunday pealing in perfect harmony so that all would know that God was and will always be with us. Every year, we each do our best to participate in Lent, walk the holy road from Palm Sunday to Good Friday and then shout with joy, "He is Risen, He is Risen, indeed" on Easter morning. But how do we keep the bells ringing the rest of the year? How do we live in such a way that the Emmanuel Bell continues to peal in our souls reminding us that even on our darkest day, there is still hope? How do we live each day with the confidence of Easter believing in resurrections, percolating miracles, and a faith that joy will come in the morning, even after our darkest night? Love is the answer. It always was and will always be. We cannot escape what happened at Golgotha, nor should we

ever want to - it's the most beautiful example of sacrificial love of all time. One's willingness to give up their life for another, for many. Although, we aren't called to stretch our bodies out on a cross, we do owe God to make our lives count for something. Love requires sacrifice. Our Creator allows us a measure of freedom, imagination, and creativity in how we love. Some of us feed, some of us embrace, some of us mend, some of us speak love words and some of us forgive. Sadly, all of us often misstep and love poorly. But that's part of the Easter message too - God's willingness to give us another try, and another try to ring the bells tucked deep inside the belfry of our souls. Like that faithful Emmanuel bell in the Notre Dame Cathedral, may our souls ring in faith, so that all will know without a shadow of a doubt the Easter message - that love wins! Live in Hope, Farrell
You Get What You Give by Andra Moran, Creative Director for "The Bridge"
In 1999, a song by the band New Radicals hit the radio waves with a bang. The song was called "You Get What You Give." It turned up on the hit music charts around the world with its infectious power-pop melody and insistent chorus: "Don't let go, you got the music in you; One dance left, the world is gonna pull through; Don't give up, you got a reason to live; Can't forget, you only get what you give." one of the most giving congregations I know. Woodmont folks take the call of Christ to share very seriously!
Week after week, a group of about 16 rotating volunteers gives generously of their time and creative energy to put together The Bridge worship service. The liturgy is developed in tandem between the staff and the congregation during the week, and shared on Sundays. This gift of time and talent allows for our Sunday worship service to offer I love that song--I love the message that we can sing, on-going creative expression, and helps all who come dance and give of ourselves as we build meaning in this life through our doors experience God through the arts. together! Week after week, I look at the mission giving and In May, Stephen and I will have been at Woodmont for 3 outreach of our church and am amazed! Hands and hearts years. What a bunch of singing, dancing, and joy we have working together to feed people, build houses, visit the shared together with our church family in that time. Over and infirmed, and offer caring responses through programs like over again, I see first hand that Woodmont is undoubtedly Divorce Care and Stephen Ministry.
(continued on page 4)
As we begin our work for the Stewardship Campaign, I'd like to say an advance thank you to each one of you for all you've done this past year. I'd also like to request that you spend some time in prayer and contemplation about what it is you have to give back to Woodmont. I know that for me and Stephen, we have been blessed beyond measure to be part of this place, and it's a joy to share our "3 T's" (time, talent and I guess that New Radicals song is right: You get what treasure) with Woodmont. give! ~Andra I could go on and on, telling stories about each of the ministries of Woodmont and the giving folks who generously share with our church. The bottom line for me is this: Week after week, I read the Spire and see how many gifts we have been given at Woodmont, and praise God for how many gifts we get as a church family!

Big thanks to the Super Somebodys for their help at The Nashville Food Project. In the picture above, Jamie Huling, Thom Schuyler, David Conrad and Steve McHugh dig posts and make plans for a vegetable washing station at the Woodmont Garden behind South Hall. The outdoor sinks will alleviate demand on crowded kitchens and allow for additional space to wash the 1,000+ pounds of donated produce we receive each week. The water runoff from washing will be pumped back into our greenhouse and used to water plants. Thank you, Super Somebodys, for your help with this project!
