Colleges, Housing and Educational Services (CHES) is a multi-funded organization within the Business and Administrative Services (BAS) division at the University of California (UC) Santa Cruz. CHES provides leadership in the areas of college student life and residential services, housing services, facilities, employee housing and capital planning, dining services, conference services, early education services, the Baytree Bookstore, ID card services, and business and financial analysis for these areas. Through these units, educational and developmental programs and services are offered to all members of the campus community including students, faculty, staff, children and external constituents. CHES provides on-campus housing and dining services to nearly 8,000 undergraduate and graduate students in ten residential colleges and six multi-college affiliated residential communities which support single students and students with families. . Under the general supervision of an Associate College Administrative Officer (ACAO) for Residential Life, the Coordinator for Residential Education (CRE) serves as a member of the student life team. The Coordinator for Residential Education provides a variety of direct support services to residential students in residence halls and apartments and assists with the management of the residential education program. Themes and areas will vary from college to college. The Coordinator for Residential Education is responsible for community building in an assigned residential area; educational, multicultural, developmental and college-wide programming; advising, conflict mediation, policy enforcement and jurisprudence; on-site crisis and emergency response coordination; student staff recruitment, selection, supervision, training and evaluation; housing and facilities management; safety and security, advising student groups; and special projects.

Programming and Activities


Duties/Responsibilities:

Facilitates the development of community, civility and responsibility among residents, and the development of an environment conductive to their academic, intellectual, cultural and social development. Provides leadership for student development in a variety of areas including: academic success, diversity and inclusion, social justice, faculty involvement, health and wellness. In conjunction with other college staff, develops and implements a comprehensive residential education program. Participates in the planning and implementation of college-wide programming including new student orientations, outreach and recruitment events, and commencement. Serves as primary resource person for student residential staff in the implementation of their programming plans and budgets. Ensures that student staff provides the required programming for their residents. Supervises and advises college-wide programming, and college specific theme program development, student groups and projects. Coordinates and plans programs specifically addressing student leadership development. Develops on-going training workshops for student leaders. In conjunction with the Residential Life team, develops methods to assess the quality of life within the residential units, participates in on-going research activities specific to residential student issues and conducts on-going program assessment of residential programs. Develops and submits program reports and statistics for area and college-wide programming to the ACAO. Makes recommendations for future program development.

Core Function: Student Staff Supervision, Training, and Meetings


Duties/Responsibilities:
Recruits, hires, and supervises student residential staff. Monitors standards of employment and provides on-going evaluative feedback. Assists student staff in the development of individual learning plans and achievement of their learning goals. Plans, implements and participates in a comprehensive training and education program for the college residential team, including on-going staff development and in-service training. Provides guidance and training appropriate for new and returning student staff members. Facilitates individual and group meetings with student residential staff. Attends all residential team meetings, training, sponsored social programs and retreats.

Attends regularly scheduled administrative staff meetings. Works cooperatively with staff from other units.

Core Function: Advising, Conflict Mediation, and Student Adjudication


Duties/Responsibilities:
Directly responsible for adjudicating assigned caseload, including record keeping. Applies principles of student development in the administration of student jurisprudence. Advises students and makes referrals to appropriate resources and agencies. Ensures due process, develops resolutions, assigns sanctions, and conducts follow-up as appropriate. Enforces residential policies that address student conduct issues such as noise, parties, alcohol and other drug use, disorderly behavior, maintenance and custodial issues, etc. Addresses residential policy and housing contract violations and documents accordingly. Sets a standard of communal and individual behavior within the residential community. Counsels and advises residents with personal and living area problems. Resolves conflict among residential students, hears grievances and initiates mediation.

Core Function: Co-Curricular and Academic Support


Duties/Responsibilities:
Supports College-wide programming to integrate the College Provost and other faculty into the residential student community. Provides educational and cultural programs that link academic departments with expressed student needs and interests. May provide workshops on academic success, study skills and other support topics utilizing campus resources. Works collaboratively with the academic advising staff in matters related to the students academic success. May design and teach classes for the student population (e.g. academic success, student leadership).

Core Function: On-Site Safety, Crisis, Disaster and Emergency Response Coordination
Duties/Responsibilities:
Provides back up and assistance to the Community Safety Program staff and other members of the college and residential staff for monitoring safety. Provides staffing and security at evening events. In conjunction with other staff, has responsibility for on-site crisis, disaster and emergency response. Coordinates with the on-call psychologist, campus resources (police, fire, etc.), and community resources in response to student physical or mental health issues. Consults with the ACAO and CAO as appropriate. Has key access to all residential areas for use in emergency, to provide access for fire safety inspections and for student lockouts. Promotes a safe and healthy workplace; monitors and addresses conditions and practices that could result in workplace injury or illness, and effectively responds to injuries that do occur.

Participates in rotating, on-call duty throughout the calendar year.

Core Function: Housing, Facilities and Dining Support


Duties/Responsibilities:
Assists and supports all general and administrative functions related to the management and administration of the Student Life Office. Assists with the opening/move-in and closing/move-out of all residential facilities. Works collaboratively with the Housing Coordinator and Facilities Staff on regularly scheduled residence hall and apartment inspections. Provides a regular presence in dining facilities. Supports the dining program by assessing, monitoring, and enforcing student p olicies when present in the dining facilities. Participates in special event activities and community College Nights in the dining facilities.

Core Function: Special Projects/Other Duties as Assigned


Duties/Responsibilities:
Participates in campus-wide activities including but not limited to outreach and recruitment of prospective students, retention of current students, and a variety of annual celebrations. As assigned, plans and implements the college portion of the Summer Orientation Program and overnight and visitor programs, working cooperatively with the College Programs Coordinator. Serves as a liaison regarding residential education issues with other campus units. Provides support to the CAO and ACAO for special projects, and performs other duties as assigned by the ACAO based on college and University need.

Previous live-in experience with undergraduate residential programs with increasing responsibility for program development and student staff supervision or equivalent experience. General theoretical knowledge base in the areas of student development theory, community development theory, program development theory, educational theory, leadership development theory, cross-cultural communications, judicial systems and group development. General understanding of the current trends and issues impacting student populations and higher education. Written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills sufficient to successfully interact with large groups, parents, the public and other professionals. Assessment and conflict mediation skills sufficient to listen to and summarize individual and group concerns. Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a diverse and multicultural setting. General knowledge of student jurisprudence including experience interpreting and implementing policies and procedures. Demonstrated ability to handle crisis situations involving student welfare and safety. Experience in recruitment, motivation, goal setting and evaluation of student staff. Experience with program presentation, facilitation, and group leadership development. Experience designing student activities and programs. Ability to work effectively as part of a team. Ability to work independently, to set priorities, and to make decisions under pressure. Excellent organizational skills. Substantial related administrative and record keeping experience. Proficiency with a computer and computer applications including word processing, page layout, spreadsheet, database, calendar and communications (e-mail/web browser) software. BA/BS degree required.

Qualifications/Competencies

Advanced degree or equivalent knowledge in Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration or related field.

Professional affiliation with professional organization such as National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), American College Personnel Association (ACPA), Association of College and University Housing Officers International (ACUHO-I), etc.

irregular work schedule, required license or certification) Selected candidate will be required to successfully pass a criminal history background check. Ability to work a variable schedule including evenings, holidays, weekends and campus closures. Must possess or have the ability to obtain, within 90 days of hire, emergency First Aid and CPR certification. Special Notations: This is a live-in position. On-campus apartment accommodation provided, in accordance with Apartment Use Agreement. Basic meal plan provided to support interaction and involvement with students in dining hall setting, during the academic year.
