Capt Achutan + Khatri---->Achutan did all the asking: - taking over command- have 10days at office.

how will you find out that the ship you are going on is safe? - Functional requirements of the SMS as per Ism code? - difference between flag state control, port state control and coastal state control jurisdiction? - your vessel has collided with another. what will you do? - how will you decide to abandon ship? - How will you check v/l's Damage stability - how do you calculate KM in damaged condition? - Make a risk assessment for Changing over from paper charts to a sytem of only ECDIS. (gave me a pen and paper to do this- checked everything from format of risk assessment to the points i had on it. that's it! Khatri asked me what was maersks the cadet training policy. but that was after he'd signed my EXN sheet. First Attempt Internal: Capt. Shukla External:Capt. Aachutan(MASSA) Duration: 20-30 Min. Result: Pass Capt. Aachutan is a through gentleman and will make you comfortable before he starts. Even asked me for tea. 1) What type of ships have U done. 2) U join a new company and are going onboard as first time Master and u have 7 days at the Company's office before joining. What all will you do and check and how will you know the ship u are joining is a safe ship. 3)Lot of cross questioning on ISM code, reporting , functional requirements, near miss reporting, audits, corrective action , preventive action. Basically he wants to make sure you tell him everything in ISM code , but wants everything in a systematic manner. 4)Functions of SMS. 5)PSC few cross questions. 6)Going from Arabian Gulf to Japan you pass India, does Indian flag have jurisdiction. How and where and what jurisdiction and under what convention's or regulations. Does not want regulation number. 7)In singapore you have a near miss collision with another v/l. Can MPA question and test masters competence and under what convention. (STCW). 8) Any type of ship you have a continuous big hull breach in 3 consecutive holds. As master how & when will you know or give orders for abandon ship. ( Give him all damaged stability procedures and also inform ERS or ETAS or SERS this is what he wanted to hear). He related this to Costa Concordia grounding and asked me what did that master not do before abandoning ship . He did not inform and consult ERS. Went into basic stability formulas. 9) Difference between intact and damage stability. Capt. Aachutan is upto date with any recent case studys and happenings and will relate direct or indirect questions to that. He does not want bookish knowledge just practically what you will do as Master.

06-Aug-2012, ASM Orals, 1st attempt, 1400-1530hrs, Location: DG Shipping, Internal MMD Surveyor: Capt. Khatri, External: Capt. Achutan; Result: Pass; Questions as follows, expected important points in brackets I've mentioned for ur reference. 1. Ldg 53 ft container (Cargo securing manual) 2. Torsion stress more on 10000 teu containers (uneven ldg across centre line, large hatch openings) 3. Bending Moments are high on large containers (long ship, cntr mostly hogs, weights at ends on ship f&a) 4. If hatch covers are not weathertight, what measures u'll expect as Master (High freeeboard, emergency bilge suction, high level alarm floats in cargo holds, pumping out arrangements, daily manual sounding). 5. Restrictions on a container ship (high cube on deck-visibility, high cude under deck-for hatch closing, live reefers on seaside- damage, IMDG container-not to load near accomodation)

6. content of certificate of fitness on container ship(cargo holds, flash point, imo class) 7. Rail engine 100t to load on container(under deck ldg, stack wt, distribution of weight, athwartship, chocks to prevent sliding, static load strength of each chain lashing to sum upto at least 100t, tipping) 8. Drag on a deep draft vessel (higher steerage speed 4-5 knts, more time to slow down, slower response on engines) 9. ISM code (cross questions for about 15 minutes on Risk Management, Internal Audit reports, Nearmiss reports, functional requirements). He told me draw format for RA checklist. 10. Risk Assessment for GPS failure - identify 10 hazards (GDOP flutuation, power failure, improper operation, switching to DR mode, no servicing) 11. Risk assessment for Navigation(watch levels) 12. lookout and helmsman can be same person (yes in level1 watchkeeping) 13. One man bridge system, how it functions (backup officer, Master, deadman alarm in accomodation) 14. Master's standing orders 15. Navigation equipments describe with their principle functions 16. 2/o reports to u he is unfit to keep watch as his rest hours are not met (I'll relieve him and take over watch and send him to have rest) 17.cadet training (orientation, SSTP, Under supervision, no critical and hazardous jobs.) Lot of cross questions on motivation and imparting skills. 18.U r joining a new company as Master. How will u know it is safe ship(no. and quality of nearmiss reportings) 19.Targetting by Port State Control, 2009 amendments and under which convention is it mandatory 20.Why we need PSC (to remove substandard ships) 21. Can PSC take Masters' orals (Yes, he can do so if he reason to believe the qualification of Master or Officers following a complaint, pollution, collision, injury or any incident on board.) 22. Container ship arrives in port with containers overhanging on one side damaged. how to avoid it (Parametric and Sychronous rolling, but altering speed, course) 23. How to calculate the period of roll (use graph against GM) 24. period of roll depends upon (beam, inversely proportional to under root of GM) 25. Collision, Action, reportings, survey management 26. 4 cargo holds damaged, when to abandon ship. (inform Emergency technical assistance services or ERS in case of tankers, consult KGmax vs draft graph in damage stability booklet) 27. Damage stability calculation (constant displacement method, sinkage, gm) 28. how to find intact water plane area (using TPC against draft) 29. How to determine crossing stuation, where defined (check aspect if the aspect of target vessel more than 112.5 deg red or green, we are overtaking or else crosssing) 30. any doubt in situation, what action which rules(quote sections) 31. meaning of not to impede 32. If ur so close u cannot avoid collision in a crossing situation(being stand on) between 2 power driven vessel, action, which rule(Rule 17) 33. why not rule 2 (lot of cross questioning pushing me to give examples when i would use rule 2 to make departure from rule. I told blatantly I'll never require to use rule to as I'll always comply with the rules and take early action). Capt. Achutan keeps pestering u to give the answer he is expecting, then he'll switch to next ques. Whatever words u feed him, u r paving track for ur next question. Q28, 30 to 33 asked by Capt. Khatri. Internal Capt shukla & external capt Achutan 1)piracy precaution and citadel requirement. 2)rules of engaement with security gaurds o/b 3)risk assement for changing over from paper to paperless charts 4)you are on tanker and 5 tank ruptured action 5)mv tosa didnt make a contact with the fishing v/l, why do u think that the fishing v/l sank. 6)u are joining a ship in 10days, how will u kno that the ship is safe 7)EEDI There was lot of question in between the above 7 questions: then capt shukla asked how are tank vessels classified according to Solas CH-2 why is that all flags insist that the master onboard shld be a citizen of that state This he told me becuase on UNCLOS and also the master handle comunication and at times these can be secretive communications. then Capt Shukla finally told me pass...carry on!!!
