CAL POLY POMONA AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENT CENTER INTERNSHIP

Under the supervision of the Interim Senior Coordinator for Student Life & Coordinator for the African American Student Center, the Graduate Intern will have the opportunity to collaborate with and learn from the Student Life & Cultural Center staff of a major CSU campus. California State Polytechnic University, Pomona is known for its beautiful and historic 1,400-acre campus, once the Arabian horse ranch of cereal magnate W.K. Kellogg, the university has an ethnically diverse student population of about 19,000. The Office of Student Life and Cultural Centers exist to support student development, cultural enhancement, social justice and academic excellence. We adhere to the belief that student involvement results in retention, improved academic performance and leadership. Through co-curricular education and academic support we empower students to go into their communities and effect/make positive changes. We envision our work will contribute to the enhancement and strengthening of our local and global communities.

Black/African/African American student development theory and practice Workshop development & presentation Event planning Supervision and feedback on interactions with students

Q u a l i f i c a t i o n s : Preferably be enrolled in a MS/MA graduate program (College Students Affairs, Student Personnel Services, Counseling, Educational Psychology or related degree). Be knowledgeable about Black/African/African American identities, culture and experiences. Able to work with diverse populations of students. Must be able to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced, team environment. Strong organizational skills. Must be able to display a strong level of professionalism. Effective communication and interpersonal skills. Energetic, self-starter. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software programs. Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends.
Commitment: Monday, August 5, 2013 Friday, June 28, 2014 (including winter and spring breaks) Compensation: $9,000/year Hours: 20 hours/week, schedule to be determined. CPP observes a 4/10 work schedule during the summer and is closed on most Fridays. Monday, April 15th @ 5pm

Support, mentor, advise, motivate and help evaluate African American Student Center (AASC) Social Justice Leaders. Provide guidance and oversight of daily operations of the African American Student Center (including responsibility for resource library, assisting with walk-ins, and maintaining a safe space). Provide appropriate support, advice and referrals to students as necessary. Provide support and assistance for the Diversity Ambassador program. Organize and plan African American Student Center signature events such as Black Broncos Rock and the Pan-African Graduation Celebration. Organize and plan events to help build community. Assist with co-advising Black/African/African American identified CPP student clubs/organizations. Assist with advising Black Advance.
