Know your telemarketing rights

(NAPS)How do you know if a telemarketing call is a scam? That friendly voice on the phone may belong to an honest salesperson who is just trying to make a living or a crook who wants to trick you out of your money. Three-quarters of the adults recently surveyed by Consumer Federation of America (CFA) said that they think it is hard for most consumers to tell the difference. And while nine in ten are concerned that telemarketing calls from companies they havent done business with before might be fraudulent, many do not know their basic telemarketing rights. Knowing your telemarketing rights can help you spot fraud, because legitimate companies usually follow the rules; scammers dont. Is an unfamiliar company calling you even though your phone number is on the National Do Not Call Registry? Is it a recorded sales pitch when you never gave the company written permission to make that type of "robocall" to you? Is the companys number blocked on your caller ID? CFAs new guide to Understanding Your Telemarketing Rights and Avoiding Fraud explains what telemarketers should and shouldnt do and how you can report violations. If the telemarketer is violating your rights, STOP! HANG UP! It may be a scam. Other danger signs of telemarketing fraud include: Pressure to act immediately or youll lose this great opportunity Promises that you can make easy money working from home Offers to help you get a loan, fix your credit record, settle your debts, save your home from foreclosure or recover money youve already lost to a scam, if you pay a fee in advance Guarantees that you can make big returns on investments with little or no risk Requests that you pay a fee to enter a sweepstakes or lottery or send money for taxes, bonding, or legal expenses to claim your winnings. Its also a danger sign if a prize is being offered as part of a sales pitch and the telemarketer doesnt tell you that no purchase is necessary. Another clue is how youre asked to pay. Fraudsters usually want to get paid fast and in cashthey dont want to wait for checks to clear or for payments to go through the credit card system, so they look for other ways to get the money. If a telemarketer has money transfer as the only method of payment it accepts, beware! Those services should only be used to send money to companies you know and trust and to individuals you have met in person. You should always have the choice of whether to use money transfers or other ways to pay. Scammers may even suggest that you put cash between the pages of a magazine and send it to them. Legitimate telemarketers would never ask you to do that. They are also exploiting new payment methods, telling people to send them the money on a prepaid card or to

Dear Dr. Winter, I am a new (complete) denture wearer. How can I determine what proper fitting dentures "should" look, fit and feel like? Neither my top, nor bottom fit. My top denture doesn't seem to go up far enough and has about a 1/4" gap where EVERYTHING (including saliva) goes under my denture(s) regardless of the denture adhesive I use. They don't line-up, my smile is "lop-sided" and I can't eat. Should my top denture go all the way up to the top/have a gap or be flush? Thanks! Dear Kathy, I am sorry you are having problems. The easiest way to answer your question is to say I have to look at your dentures to evaluate the size of the peripheries, the seal in the palatal area and the retention of the new denture. Dentures should fit intimately to the palate. They should not have a gap that is felt with the tongue. If the denture is extended too far to the back of your mouth it is possible to feel a gap if your soft palate is covered as your soft palate moves during speech and swallowing. If the top denture doesn't seem to go up high enough the dentist needs to evaluate it and make sure there is a good fit and it has been trimmed properly to insure the denture is fully seated. If it is not all the way down, a proper adjustment could allow it to seat further. In the absence of good fit the denture may need to be relined where a new impression is taken in the denture and it is sent to the lab to have additional acrylic added to the inside of the denture. If you can't eat the dentures are not done. I always tell patients the day they take my dentures home they are only half done! The final adjustments to your fit and bite will help insure they are optimal. If they don't line up--and your smile is lop-sided you need to address this with your dentist so they can remedy the situation. If the dentist did one or more try-in visits to check smile display, alignment, bite then they should look great now. Please ask your dentist to address these items until you are satisfied. If not seek a second opinion. Dear Dr. Winter, I had porcelain crowns done 4 years ago and I am just not happy. There is now a space between the teeth and they appear to be too yellow what should I do? Also a space opened up and I didn't wear the retainer I was given with the crowns. Well, presumably you approved them before they were cemented. Patients are always told that the color of crowns will not change so they must approve the

shape and appearance prior to allowing them to be cemented. It is much easier to have a lab change the color of the crowns before they are cemented then to go through the arduous task of cutting them off, retemporizing the teeth, making a new impression and redoing the entire process. Not to mention that cutting crowns off of teeth is not a benign process and can lead to further trauma to the underlying tooth structure and potentially causing the nerves to die resulting in one or more root canals. Not wearing a mouthguard in situations where patients clench their teeth or grind their teeth can allow teeth to move as well so not wearing your mouthguard can really change your bite in certain situations. By Craig W. Armstrong Spring is here and everyone wants to enjoy the warmer weather that includes animals. Each year, there are more than a million auto accidents involving animals, accounting for an estimated 10,000 injuries and 150 deaths each year. The average amount of property damage caused by animal collisions is $2,500 per accident. Where you live determines which animals you might encounter. Animals like deer, moose, elk, horse and cows often wander onto highways or roads. The most important thing a driver can do to stay safe is to be alert. Reducing your speed is key to avoiding an animal-related accident. The more time you have to react, the better chance you will have of avoiding an accident. In areas animals are known to habitat, get into the habit of scanning the roadway. Use your high beams whenever possible. This will help you see the animals' eyes reflected in the light. Keep in mind that many species of animals travel in groups. When you see one deer bounding across the road, chances are there will be several more following. Be extra cautious when driving near farms, wooded areas, open fields and water. Many times you will see signs advising you of the animals known to cross the road in that area. Take these signs seriously. Make yourself known. Use your horn to warn the animal of your presence. Honking your horn is the most effective way to get the animal's attention. If are in a situation where an accident with an animal is inevitable, don't swerve. Swerving to avoid an animal can cause more damage and injury than hitting the animal. Apply the brakes hard, honk your horn and try to maintain control of your vehicle. If there are vehicles behind you, pump your brakes and sound your horn. As with anytime you get into a vehicle, be sure to use your seatbelt. If you do have a collision with an animal, stay in your vehicle, as getting out increases your chances of being hit by another vehicle. Report the incident to the police immediately. Animals don't get issued driver's licenses, but they do share the road with you. Drive defensively, stay alert and be safe.

By Craig W. Armstrong You survived winter, and now that spring has sprung, you think you have it made. Wrong. Spring showers bring more than May flowers; they also bring treacherous driving conditions. From rain to fog, construction to wildlife, spring has its share of driving obstacles. Spring can bring torrential rain and flooded roads. The dangers of these are obvious. Excessive speed on a drenched road can cause your vehicle to hydroplane. Hydroplaning occurs when the vehicle loses traction and slides like a sled over snow. Also, keep an eye out for potholes. If a pothole is filled with water, you cannot judge how deep it is. Going through a pothole at high speed can cause damage to your vehicle as well as cause you to lose control. It is also important to watch for puddles of water along the side of the road. By Craig W. Armstrong The weather is warmer and it's time to see how your vehicle survived the winter. Spring is a great time to make those repairs, check those fluid levels and see how the winter has treated your tires. Your tires are something you can check and maintain, even if you aren't mechanically inclined. The first thing to do is check the pressure. You should do this every couple of weeks and before road trips. If you don't check your tire pressure on a regular basis, spring is a good time to start. First, you need to determine the recommended PSI (pounds per square inch) for the tire. This can be found on the tire or in the owner's manual. To check the pressure, you will need a tire gauge. Most pressure gauges you can buy today are digital and easy to read. Unscrew the cap on the tire stem and put on the pressure gauge. If it reads "35 psi," that means the tire requires 35 pounds of pressure per square inch. If air is needed to reach the recommend PSI,

Put the spring back in your vehicle

By Craig W. Armstrong The days are getting warmer, the ice has melted and the birds have returned. That can mean only one thing-spring has sprung. For many people, spring brings a return to the great outdoors. It can also mean less treacherous and time consuming driving. No more digging your car out just to go to work, driving at a snail's pace and scraping, yes, the dreaded scraping. While it's tempting to jump in your vehicle and enjoy the freedom that spring brings to driving, keep in mind that like you, your car has been through a lot over the winter. There are several things that need to be checked and prepared for spring driving. Depending on your level of car maintenance expertise, you may be able to do most of these things yourself. If not, have a professional take a look under the hood. Begin where the rubber meets the road-your tires. Check your tire pressure. The correct pressure will be printed on the tire in PSI (pounds per square inch). If the tire is under the recommended PSI, inflate it to that number...DON'T OVER INFLATE IT. This may also be a good time to get your tires rotated. This should be done every 5,000 to 10,000 miles. For many areas, spring means rain so it's a good time to check your wiper blades. There are few things more annoying than driving in the rain with wiper blades that aren't doing their job. It's frustrating to have a big smear across your field of vision or a torn wiper blade trailing across your windshield. Avoid these problems b checking your wiper blades. Replacing the blades is quick, easy and relatively inexpensive. Simply go into your local auto part store, tell them your vehicle make and model, and they'll direct you to the correct replacement blade. Many stores will even install them for you. Another part that is easy to check is your battery. Pop the hood and make sure that the posts on the battery are clean. If there is an excess of corrosion on the battery, consider replacing it. Clean out the interior. Months of salty and snowy boots have no doubt taken a toll on the carpeting. It's a good time to vacuum and perhaps even shampoo the carpeting. While you're at it, clean out the empty coffee cups and fast food bags. Other things to consider are the air filter, the oil and oil filter, and the radiator and cooling system. Spring is a time to get reacquainted with the great outdoors-just make sure your vehicle is ready to spring into better weather.

A vehicle that works harder uses more gas and costs more money. Next, check your tires for wear; a worn tire is smooth. Hopefully, your tires are not completely bald. But, if they do still have some tread, is it enough? A way to check wear is to reach into your pocket, take out a penny and place it into the tire's groove, with Lincoln's head upside down and facing toward you. If you can see the top of "honest Abe's" head, it's time to go shopping for new tires. The way you drive affects your tires. To ensure they last as long as possible, keep these things in mind. Driving at high speeds generates heat and will reduce the life of the tread. It's also important to consider what you encounter on the road. Avoid going over potholes and hitting curbs when you turn. Also keep an eye out for road kill. They may already be flattened, but don't run over those unfortunate critters. Another way to extend the life of your tires is to rotate them. By rotating your tires, you allow them to wear more evenly. A good rule of thumb is to have them rotated every 6,000 to 8,000 miles. Spring means the flowers are blooming and the weather is warmer. Take the time to make sure your vehicle is operating at its peak. By taking care of your tires, you can make sure it runs its best from the ground up.

can be dangerous to drive through them as an adult. If you have ever driven through a puddle, you know how it can completely shift your vehicle and send you spinning to regain control. Another danger from Mother Nature is fog. As temperatures rise, fog can form over ground which is cooler. Fog restricts or completely eliminates visibility. The most important rule for driving in fog is to SLOW DOWN. You must be able to stop within your sight distance. Be sure to slow down BEFORE you enter the fog, not after. Keep your low beam headlights on in the fog and don't hesitate to put on your hazard light. The key to driving in fog is to be seen. Whether you are driving in rain or fog, it is important to keep a safe distance between your car and others on the road. A good rule of thumb is the two-second rule. As a vehicle in front of you passes a stationary object, begin counting. At least two seconds should pass before you pass the same object. Keeping a two-second distance is always a good idea, but it is especially important in inclement weather. Warmer weather also brings road construction. The orange barrels will be out, so take special care to give the road crew the space they need. Observe all construction speed limits and be prepared for delays. Pay attention and dont wait until the last minute to merge into one lane. Spring means the flowers are blooming and animals are being born. Deer and other wildlife will be out and about and running into roadways. Animals tend to run into traffic, not away from it. Keep an eye out and reduce your speed in areas animals are known to habitat. Winter may be over, but spring brings its own driving risks. Stay vigilant as you drive your way into summer.

and public transit. In this era of limited resources, the budget places a much-needed and overdue emphasis on improving the maintenance of our highway system. County highway departments, in partnership with the Wisconsin DOT, have done an excellent job maintaining our state highways for over one hundred years. County workers perform the routine maintenance that keeps the highway system in good condition, including plowing and salting. The Governors budget adds new funding for better maintenance and enacts reforms that will allow that maintenance to be performed more cost-effectively. At the Wisconsin DOT, preservation and safety are two of our most important goals. By improving the enforcement of truck size, weight and safety laws, and by increasing the penalty for grossly overweight trucks and repeat offenders, the Governors budget will protect our highways and bridges from unnecessary damage and make travel safer for auto and truck drivers alike. Making these transportation investments without increasing taxes and fees is a challenge. The state legislature recently gave final approval to a constitutional amendment to protect transportation fund money from being used for non-transportation purposes and that amendment will go before the voters in November 2014. In the meantime, the Governor has committed not only to ending the raids, but also to restoring the funds that were previously taken. This budget will repay almost $100 million of those past transfers. As has been the case in the past, the budget also uses bond funding, but only for the costliest and longest-life projects, as a means to spread their cost across both present and future users. Transportation serves as the foundation that literally "drives" our economy. Too often, we take for granted our inter-connected transportation system that supports every aspect of our economic health. Through wise stewardship and by prioritizing existing resources, Governor Walkers proposed transportation budget keeps people and commerce in Wisconsin moving forward.

Getting the most out of Social Security

(BPT) - The majority of Americans support continuing the Social Security program, even if they are decades away from drawing benefits, a 2010 survey by AARP found. Nevertheless, with the program's future financial viability an ongoing subject of political debate, many people may undervalue the role Social Security can play in their retirement planning. "For years, financial services companies have downplayed the role of Social Security in bolstering financial security in retirement," writes James Mahaney, vice president of Strategic Initiatives for Prudential, in the white paper "Innovative Strategies to Help Maximize Social Security Benefits." "However, considering the increased financial risks retirees now shoulder, the tax preferences that Social Security receives, and the income options that Social Security now offers, a strong argument can be made that Social Security should play a greater role in a retiree's financial planning." Each day, 10,000 Americans reach retirement age. With people living longer and fewer companies offering pensions, saving for retirement has become even more important for today's workers. Yet, retirement savings rates remain low. Social Security offers "regular income that is guaranteed to increase over time and continue for as long as you live," Mahaney writes. "No other (retirement) vehicle can match the combination of inflation-fighting increases, longevity protection, investment risk elimination, and spousal coverage that Social Security can (offer)." With Social Security accounting for approximately 40 percent of income for the average retiree, according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute, it makes sense to take steps to maximize potential Social Security benefits, Mahaney advises. While most Americans realize they accrue Social Security benefits throughout their careers, many may be unaware that they can influence the amount they will receive upon retirement. Retirees can help maximize their Social Security benefits by avoiding four costly - and common mistakes: Don't underestimate the real value of Social Security. Don't rush to collect Social Security - and then regret the reduced benefits for the rest of your life. Don't overlook the various ways married couples can integrate their benefits. Don't get blindsided by taxes. Claiming benefits as soon as they're eligible is a common mistake that can cost retirees tens of thousands of dollars over their lifetime. Although most everyone becomes eligible for benefits at age 62, delaying benefits until you reach Full Retirement Age (which varies depending on your birth year) or later may help ensure you receive the maximum amount you qualify

Our CNAs play a critical role in assisting our residents with ADLs, meds, light housekeeping, laundry, meals, identifying health changes, etc. The CNAs main role is to help our residents stay as active and independent as possible. ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR Part Time

Exciting opportunity for a high energy, dynamic person with experience creating and running a great activities program for the senior popultation. Our residents are active and want to be engaged every day in a diverse program. This position is located at Wilson Commons - The Polonaise on the southeast side of Milwaukee (13th-Howard area). The ideal candidate will plan the monthly calendar and newsletter, plan events and various outings that would appeal to our residents. The right person will have experience working with memory care support (a certification in Memory Care/Support is a plus!), will have a flexible schedule and is willing to work some evenings and weekends.
Our Housekeepers maintain a safe, clean and comfortable home for our residents and their families by keeping our common areas and resident rooms clean, safe and comfortable. Looking for part time with some weekends. Candidates must be responsible, compassionate, team players, have a positive attitude and want to make a difference in the lives of our residents. To qualify, you must have a HS diploma (or equivalent), reliable transportation, excellent attendance record, and the ability to have a flexible schedule around wkds/holidays.
