What you see above is a set of six multicolored murals. The logo on each of them reads as at LA. These are just a few of similarly done murals across the city. The artist who did them happens to be none other than Sergio Diaz, our Woodshop Lead. Sergio has been into art since the 90s, but only recently began to do this combination logo-mural about 2 years ago. He never expected much of a response to it, since its just a modified @ symbol, but it has grown tremendously popular. For example, Sergio was specifically asked to do the set of murals above. Usually he asks owners for permission to do murals on their buildings. His fans have told him that they like how a common symbol has been repurposed into a representation of their home city, Los Angeles.

A box cutter injury calls for a review in box cutter safety. Among the different types of injuries that could happen here, this type of injury is rather small, but that doesnt mean we can dismiss them entirely. If you are careless enough, you could probably sever a thumb with a box cutter. Even though box cutters are common and easy to use, we must not make the mistake of thinking that theyre childproof or safe for everybody to use. To use knives and box cutters safely point the blade away from yourself when cutting. Make sure no body parts are in the cutting path. Be sure that other people in the area are at a safe distance before you cut into the shrink wrap, tape, carton, etc. Take your time. Hacking your way through half an inch of shrink wrap is much more dangerous than methodically cutting through the material a couple of layers at a time. When youre not using the knife or box cutter, make sure the blade is safely stored away. Knives fold so that the blade is stored inside the handle, or they are put into protective sheaths. Many box cutters are retractable so that the blade is not a danger to people who arent aware of its presence.

Think about it: When you put down your knife or cutter on a cluttered table, its entirely possible that a co-worker will put his or her hand down on top of it. If youve taken care to close it or retract the blade, your buddies will be able to continue helping you do your jobs, versus making a quick trip to the emergency room for stitches. Blades are best when theyre sharp. Because sharp blades are much easier to operate (i.e. you dont have to go into hacking-and-slashing motions to cut one strand of rope), theyre safer to use. This is because you wont become frustrated with the dull tool, and because youll be able to get the job done faster without compromising safety. Dont use tools with rusted blades. Even if youve had all your shots (including tetanus), you should still be careful of rust. It increases the chance of cuts and nicks becoming infected and dulls the tool. Its more likely to break, sending steel shrapnel everywhere.

Q: Why should I be concerned about antibiotic resistance? A: Antibiotic resistance has been called one of the worlds most pressing public health problems. Almost every type of bacteria has become stronger and less responsive to antibiotic treatment when it is really needed. These antibiotic-resistant bacteria can quickly spread to family members, schoolmates, and co-workers - threatening the community with a new strain of infectious disease that is more difficult to cure and more expensive to treat. For this reason, antibiotic resistance is among CDCs top concerns. Antibiotic resistance can cause significant danger and suffering for children and adults who have common inQ: How can I prevent antibiotic-resistant infections?
fections, once easily treatable with antibiotics. Microbes can develop resistance to specific medicines. A common misconception is that a persons body becomes resistant to specific drugs. However, it is microbes, not people, that become resistant to the drugs. If a microbe is resistant to many drugs, treating the infections it causes can become difficult or even impossible. Someone with an infection that is resistant to a certain medicine can pass that resistant infection to another person. In this way, a hard-to-treat illness can be spread from person to person. In some cases, the illness can lead to serious disability or even death.
A: Only use antibiotics when they are likely to be beneficial. It is important to understand that, although they are very useful drugs, antibiotics designed for bacterial infections are not useful for viral infections such as a cold, cough, or the flu. Some useful tips to remember are: 1. Talk with your healthcare provider about antibiotic resistance: Ask whether an antibiotic is likely to be beneficial for your illness. Ask what else you can do to feel better sooner. 2. Do not take an antibiotic for a viral infection like a cold or the flu. 3. Do not save some of your antibiotic for the next time you get sick. Discard any leftover medication once you have completed your prescribed course of treatment. 4. Take an antibiotic exactly as the healthcare provider tells you. Do not skip doses. Complete the prescribed course of treatment even if you are feeling better. If treatment stops too soon, some bacteria may survive and re-infect. 5. Do not take antibiotics prescribed for someone else. The antibiotic may not be appropriate for your illness. Taking the wrong medicine may delay correct treatment and allow bacteria to multiply. 6. If your healthcare provider determines that you do not have a bacterial infection, ask about ways to help relieve your symptoms. Do not pressure your provider to prescribe an antibiotic.
