Type poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) Application As binder in excipient tabletting and for preparation of hydrophilic polymers Hydrophilic polymers for matrices formulation (as binder) Properties soluble in water other polar solvents
hydroxypropylmethylcellulose
poly(methylmethacrylate)
For preparation of heparincoated nanospheres. After administration, it remain in the bloodstream and show long circulating properties As lubricant, binder and film coating (excipient) in pharmaceutical tablet
-soluble in most organic solvents -insoluble in hot water and alcohol - Stable. Solid is combustible, incompatible with strong oxidizing agents. -non-modified:behaves in a brittle manner when loaded -modified: very high scratch and impact resistance. -liquids or low-melting solids, depending on their molecular weights - soluble in water, methanol, benzene, and dichloromethane, and is insoluble in diethyl ether and hexane - contain potential toxic impurities, such as ethylene oxide -ester groups of the polyvinyl acetate are sensitive to base hydrolysis - will slowly convert PVAc into polyvinyl alcohol and acetic acid. Insoluble in water
Polyethylene glycol
1. Molecular weight of monomer and total molecular weight of polymer. Base on the equation above, the higher the molecular weight of monomer unit, the higher degree of polymerization (total molecular weight of polymer is kept constant) The higher the total molecular weight of polymer, the higher degree of polymerization. (the molecular weight of monomer unit is kept constant)
2. Concentration of monomer units. The higher the concentration of monomer units, the higher degree of polymerization.
3. Presence of Co-polymers As example, polymer X consists of monomer A and monomer B. Monomer A consists of 5 repeated units of monomer and monomer B consists of 5 repeated units of monomer. Number of monomeric units of polymer X = 10 Degree of polymerization = 5 because there are two types of monomers that are repetitively arranged in the polymer X.
5. Temperature
The higher degree of polymerization will give higher melting temperature. Higher of DP require higher temperature to break the bond and melt.
